Bent drive shaft boot lip

I was taking off my drive axles to replace torn boots when I noticed this:

Looks like the PO hit it a few times with a hammer or something.
Is it necessary to replace the whole axle due to this? I don't think it would make a very good seal against the new boot.

Unless the axle itself is bent, you should be ok with re-using it. I'm not sure if that back side of the joint is available separately, but I have seen on here replacement joints available online.

I made that mistake. I had the engine/tranny removed and had to push the car about 100 yards from my garage to a transporter with the drive axles hanging unsupported from the rear wheel hubs. There was a lot of clanking but luckily I "only" tore the boots.

I just dealt with this. Just lightly tap the bends back toward the inside going back and forth between the bends. It will true up the circumference almost like it never happened and the clamp for the new boot will hold just fine.

If you do decide to replace it, don't pay $150. There are plenty of sites that offer this piece in the $20 range.

eBay listing is for a set of 4 ($36 apiece). They are advertised as cromoly (high carbon alloy steel) which could be stronger than OEM.

Just FYI, if you buy any of these types of parts from aftermarket sources like this, you may need to run an 11mm bit through the holes. There is nothing wrong with the parts (they're all certainly stronger than the stock stamped caps), its just that a lot of aftermarket usage of these joints is for people using 3/8-16 bolts instead of M10. 3/8 is slightly smaller than 10mm so the bolts may just barely not fit. This happened to me; as long as you run a drillbit through the holes, they'll work great.
