Backup Camera, New Product

I just read an article about former apple engineers working on a backup camera for cars. Since our cars are horrible to see when backing up I've been looking for a solution.

This sounds like a good idea. No wires to run, Solar charging, Smart Phone or tablet interface

The problem is as most Apple stuff it isn't cheap $500.00.

I think the DMC actually has better rear visibility than most modern cars (which now have pretty high rear decks that obscure visibility). The product seems cool, but expensive, and the OBDII dongle is of no use in our cars.

I was thinking about that when I read the article, and I'm wondering how we would fit a camera-equipped license plate frame on the back. For $17, you can't really go wrong.

I know that there are those who think that attacking the rear fascia with a drill is sacrilege, but even if I take the camera out in the future it's a tiny hole in an out-of-sight location that can be easily filled in if desired.

This will not be a plug and play option for the DeLorean. Quote: "The RearVision unit comes with a dongle that connects with a vehicle's on-board diagnostic port to help communicate..."

I've got it hard-wired into my Jensen VX-4012 stereo head unit. I initially had it wired up to automatically come on by powering it with the 12v feed for the reverse lights, but for some reason my reverse lights have never worked. I bought a pair of those DMCH toggle switches that replace the dummy switches in the console and I can flick the camera on any time that I want it. Mine has those same distance lines as the ones shown on Patrick's video. I've got it mounted right above the license plate under the lip of the rear fascia.

Here's a couple of pics of mine installed.

Kinda hard to see, but the camera is right about the "N" in Tennessee on the license plate. The thing above the "E" on the end of Tennessee is one of those "laser 3rd brake lights". Haven't got pulled over for it yet.

It's pretty much a "bling thing". It's basically a 12v laser pointer in a weatherproof housing that shoots a red line on the pavement about 6 feet behind the car. I've got mine locked so it can't be adjusted upwards so there's no chance it could blind anybody. It's spliced in to the brake light wiring harness inside the rear fascia.

I put one of these $30 cheapos on my truck so I can see the trailer hitch. Nothing fancy, but it works great. The camera can be removed from that tag mount and can be mounted wherever your imagination allows.

Thats a lil screen...hehe. I was considering one I saw at autozone (or something like it) that has a screen that comes out...of course it covers the vents, so I'd have to think about that.
