Found this while cleaning up near the coil. Wire is yellow and is frayed badly near the firewall. What's it do and how bad is it if I leave it like this for now?

That is a 2.2 uf. capacitor that connects to the + side of the coil. If it breaks it will reduce your spark power.

Nonsense -- it's there for noise reduction (AM radio reception basically). As long as you listen to FM only (or even worse, satellite), you don't need it.

It's no different than the capacitor DMC added to the idle microswitch. Kind of a blast from the past (people forget that AM radio ruled the airways in the 1970's).

You may be correct. I was thinking of the function of the cap on the "points" side of the coil. That was there to control current in the coil and prevent points from burning.

that was my understanding as to why it is there. I think the earth just shook again, bill and I are in agreement.

Thanks guys. It was for the radio. It must still be working a little because when I unplugged it I had no AM reception at all. So i'll leave it for now. Any ideas where I can get a new one? DMCH or pep boys?

If you've lost AM reception altogether, something is wrong with your radio. All that capacitor does is eliminate the annoying "tick tick" and screeching that AM frequencies pick up from the ignition firing. FM frequencies are pretty much immune to it.
