So what's the cleanest way to replicate this set-up?

After seeing that video a month or 2 ago, I thought the same thing....I WANT THAT!

I bet there is a BTTF soundboard app for your phone, just plug your phone into an amplifier/loudspeaker and tada!

that might come in handy :) I get people all the time saying stuff, when all i want them to do is pay attention to the road and not hit my car.

I was looking for a more permanent solution....The only thing needed to figure out is a device that could be pressed to play a sound clip that could be uploaded to it from a computer...and of course had an output jack to go to a small PA speaker....

Radio Shack
9V Recording Module
Model: 276-1323 | Catalog #: 276-1323
$10.99
"This 9V Recording Module stores up to 20 seconds of sound and plays it back instantly at the touch of a button. You can use the module to create a digital notepad and record reminders, to-do lists, phone numbers and more. Attach the module to a greeting card and the recipient will hear your message "live". All included components are prewired. Requires a 9V battery (not included)"
EDIT:
Dave/Bitsyncmaster: What would be the correct component to use, to convert the car's 12V feed, to this device's 9V input?

I wonder how loud you could get that to work.
Would cutting the original speaker wire and splicing in a longer length wire and larger speaker under the hood or car make it louder with only a 9Volt battery?
Would it be possible to move the activation button from the module to somewhere accessible and hide the module under the dash for use?

No, you'd need an amp.

I haven't seen the board, but I'd think you could probably un-solder the current button and re-solder some wires to a remote switch.

Here's a cheap speaker that should be loud enough...

This would be better quality; it will upload from computer via USB. Plus the play button can be extended since it has external wiring.
Now the only roadblock is how to amplify the sound in a compact way....

You'd still need to amplify the signal to it, from that tiny board.

Nice.
...and you'd have to step down the car's 12V to 4.5V on this unit.

Google it. There's a whole bunch of options for car audio amps. I can't imagine you'd need anything more than in a 50W-100W range. Should be some small packages in that size.

The record function is handy, so you can replay the last joke-attempt to the next person.

I want to rig something up to the door switches so that when they open, they play the door opening sounds from bttf. Not sure what kind of work is needed for that though...

How about this for an amplifier? Accepts a 6-16VDC input, drives one speaker 12Watts at 4 ohms, takes a line level input...

And for converting 12VDC to whatever voltage you want...

Many/most modern car stereos that have bluetooth links will also support streaming bluetooth audio.
With one of these stereos installed you can leave the stereo on, with the volume preset, and then use your iphone/droid as a remote audio server. Keep all your sounds on the phone, in a single playlist, and then just trigger them as you want them. You can be in the car, or up to about 20 feet away.
It also works great when driving, to listen to your tunes.
Plus you have the added benefit of having a bluetooth phone link when your driving.

Ooooh, nice find.
Using the same link, there is an amplifier/speaker in one combo for $100 (http://horntones.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=32&osCsid=5bd0171ddfec9e2d77a8b571596cdb3a). You now only just need the ebay USB recorder, a little careful wiring, and you'd have this system implemented.

The dude in the time machine is made of epic win for having that PA system. Every DeLorean owner should have that butt-head quote available. I doubt anyone would take it the wrong way.

Wouldn't work for rubberneckers but this three made me think of Raj's shirt in BBT
Would work for car shows etc.

Anyone get anywhere with this? It's on the list, but other things have been putting themselves ahead of it.
In the meantime i was thinking of making a CD with tracks with the soundbytes on them that i could play if I decided someone deserved it.
Anyone done this before?

I believe Don Steger (DMCCA) was driving the Car. If you know Don you know he has quite the sense of humor. I do think it was funny he was driving with the BAR CODE license plate. Perhaps the Patrol car was an escort to an event.

This is what you want. I have two of them and they work great.

I had to take a closer look. It could be paul. The profile looked a lot like Don at first. Also I did notice the real CA plate mounted above the Bar Code one. Danny Botkin built a BTTF car too. Thats why I thought it might have been Don driving it. I don't know if Danny still has his though. It was for sale a few years ago.
