Rub strip came off. Damn.

While washing the car today, the passenger door rub strip started to peel off. It had been loose in the middle for a while, so I suppose this was inevitable. The pic was taken after I removed the adhesive residue:

It looks like the PO did a horrible job attaching it, as the rubber appears somewhat new. You can see here how randomly the adhesive was applied.

When I pulled it off the rest of the way, the soft black "cushion" ripped.

My question is how do I go about re-attaching this? Should I apply adhesive on top of the "cushion" or pull it off completely? If so, is the "cushion" easily replaced? Keep in mind that the back side is recessed a bit, so if it's gone completely there is quite a gap to fill.

That "cushion" was the original adhesive tape. You need to remove all of it (a pain) and put down 3M VHB tape in its place. Then reattach to the car.

For what it's worth, if it was a replacement rubber strip the PO put on, it may not have been his/her fault. I had a horrible time with my Houston replacement years ago, the tape was garbage (old?) and hardly stuck at all, the DMCH replacement is what I needed to pull the old adhesive off of and put 3M on. Believe it or not, I used a die grinder to whiz through the old adhesive but you have to be careful you don't damage the rubber.

And a helpful tip for getting the long rub strip mounted onto the door flawlessly straight:

With the door closed use masking tape to mount a long, thick straightedge onto the door such that the top of the straightedge is up against the adjacent rub strips ahead of and behind the missing strip.

Work the rub strip onto the door starting from one end using the straightedge as a vertical guide that the bottom of the rub strip registers to just before you press it onto the stainless. It will look as good as new.

And before you pull the liner off of the VHB tape do a test-fit of the rub strip to be sure you are happy with the fore-aft position you will shoot for when it sticks.

It doesn't matter. I would go for the 1/2" width. You'll have to double up with the 1/4".

I went with the 03609 but I still had to double up the tape in order to completely fill the width of the rubbing strip. The second strip of tape needed to be cut down in size width wise of course.

So, if you would have bought one of each (1/2" and 1/4"), you would have been good to go without trimming...;o)?
