I have no clock or radio. Everything on Fuse #11 is working fine i.e. Window switches, AC panel lights, etc. Fuse #11 is also fine. Newer radio put into car years ago...just stopped working but I'm not sure when. I have my mode switch out for a cleaning, not sure exactly how long the radio has been off or the clock for that matter as the clock has been out of the car for years.

Since the radio and clock are tied together I was hoping for an inline fuse, but I don't see any. From reading on the forum they should be located near the passenger side footwell, perhaps near the radio or under the center console. I don't see any, unless they are typically underneath some massive wire tape job that to me look like just a huge normal looking vein of wires....
Perhaps I took the inline fuses out when the new radio went in?

Is there a way to bench test the clock to see if it even works anymore? It worked several years ago when I parked it on the shelf and just never got back to it until now.

Little strange that the radio also doesn't work.

Any ideas?

The radio clock cigar lighter are tide together with a 20A fuse. In the main box did you check that? It's behind the passenger seat above the battery.

Sorry about the other post reading to fast on a phone. See if they taped in another wire.

If there are inline fuses, wouldn't they be AFTER the clock and before the radio? So...if either fuse is popped it would make sense that the radio is off, but the clock should still be on shouldn't it?

The only inline fuses are on the OEM radio, power antenna, and sometimes the brake lights. You've cut another wire somewhere. You can bench test the clock, black to batt negative, all the others to positive.

Specifically, Yes and Yes.

Both inline fuses are positioned below the Radio and nested into main harness.

The (Memory) PURPLE wire inline fuse is between the console clock and radio it is LIVE as long as the battery is connected. It is fed by Fuse 17.

The (Main power) LIGHT GREEN/white wire fuse is (ACC relay switched power) down stream of the Cigarette lighter and just for Radio only protection from the Fuse 11 circuit.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago after I got a new radio installed. As it turns out the shop didn't bolt down the console underneath the coin tray. The console's metal anchors cut through the GREEN/WHITE wire and the metal contact created a short in the circuit. You may want to check the wire for continuity between the fuse box and the back of your radio.

Thanks Dave...

Yes, clock confirmed as working. The search continues...

Corrected

I guess, I should have read the Original post more closely. Oops, My Bad.

Started checking for continuity on the green and purple wires. I have continuity at the green wire at the back of the radio, as well as window switches and clock. Now if green goes to Red (switched Power) in the newer radio harness, shouldn't the radio work if I have continuity with the green ? I thought purple was only for memory...

I have NO continuity at purple wire anywhere I check. Not at radio, not at clock, not at cigar lighter, etc. I'm starting to think it is a pinched or cut wire somewhere back farther towards the rear of the center console. Will keep checking.

I still don't see any inline fuses anywhere. They must have been removed....

Do you have power at Fuse 17?

I just thought of that Dennis.... I forgot that purple drives off of fuse #17. I was checking for continuity with purple off of #11. I switched the lead over to #17, and now I have continuity everywhere with purple....even at the radio, yet no radio. I've checked the small 10amp fuse in the back of the radio and it looks good, so I must assume the radio itself is dead? It's not that old...I hope my car isn't eating radios....

I have a fuse and relay list and diagram taped under my wooden panel that sits above the fuse box. I guess my eyes were reading a little fast because under fuse #11 it says radio clock.
I misinterpreted this as radio, clock.

I think I will pull the radio and take a closer look.

Since it's aftermarket anything is possible. Do you have the ability to run direct power to the radio with isolated power and ground? (bench test)

Well, I thought I found the problem... I see that the yellow wire going into the back of the radio is broken right at the little metal terminal. I completely destroyed the radio plug attempting to remove the damaged terminal so I could fix it. See pictures below. I can't remember if Houston sells the plug adapter that fits a newer style radio for our cars or if this is the one that came with my Kenwood and I just made all the connections.

I took the radio out of the car and tried to bench test it by using my trickle charger... I hooked the yellow and red terminals together to positive and the black Ground Terminal on the radio to negative but it doesn't come on. This is a little hard to do with alligator clips since the wiring block is still attached to the car but I still think it's dead.

Do you have a simple 12V test light to confirm power at the appropriate locations in the car? I assume if you confirmed the continuity checks you should be good for power though, which rules out the car side.

I don't have one....your DVM should work then on the 20V DC scale. I also found a some photos of the two fuses I was talking about earlier. ( on a different computer ) I'll post them for reference shortly even though they have been ruled out.

I think my fuses are gone. I could dig thru years of DMCMW emails to verify, but I'll just assume that's how it is. Anywho...bought a new head unit today and started putting it in. Figured the old one must be dead, and it was time for an upgrade. Question on the new unit....there is a white/orange wire that is for illumination. Directions say to hook it up to the car's illumination source. This is a new one for me. Guy at the store said it could always be capped off, but was wondering if there was a better way to utilize that wire in our car. What does it get hooked to?

You would likely tie it into the instrument panel lighting at the Rheostat (dimming side) ON with headlights Or to A/C panel illumination ON all the time. My guess is, the face buttons remain lit even when the radio is off, but are also dimmable with instrument lighting.

Well... Got the new radio in and wired up. It actually works!! ...:swear1::spank:until I put on the headlights or hazard switch. It shuts off and remains off until I turn the key off and then back on. Doesn't pop any fuses, but kills if I hit either switch. GRRRRRR.....

What harness wire did you use for power?

Did you connect the yellow /white illumination wire or not?

Is your Kenwood connection harness still in the car or did you remove it where it was spliced into the factory harness?

GS450-Junkie

I did not connect the illumination wire.

Kenwood plug came out, stereo guy confirmed it was a Kenwood plug.

Took one wire out at a time to splice in the new pioneer plug. Had all the exact same wires as the Kenwood plug. Is this a grounding issue?

DMC5180

Could be. But it seems like a back feed issue or you're somehow tapped into a circuit that breaks power or ground momentarily with the operation of the lighting switches. Is there a way you can do a direct ground to the battery for testing?

Took everything out tonight...checked grounds, connections, etc. Everything looked good. I think it may have been a borderline dead battery. Enough power to run the radio, but when the headlight or hazard switch clicked on the voltage may spike just enough to steal power away from the radio and force it into a reboot. Battery was struggling to keep up since I had been at it with the car off for an hour or so making connections and adjusting things. that's all I can come up with right now since everything looks good and is functioning well following several hours on the charger.

Here's a question tho... Is the hazard switch supposed to flash in addition to the 4 ways? I can't remember...

Check the ground wiring on the radio and make sure its not spliced into something else. One time I installed an after-market radio in a Toyota Camry and thought I had spliced into a ground wire only to find out it was the parking wire lights, which yielded some strange behavior like you described.
