View Full Version : Transmission 5-Speed Best transmission case sealant. Expert opinions please.

About to reassemble my manua trans, deciding which sealant to use on the case halves. Ive built one Dmc manual transmission before with Pertex Anaerobic sealant, it went well but not perfect. I have a few options at my disposal here:

Curil k2; non hardening compound, ive had sucess with this on aircooled vw engine cases, simular idea here. Best on fuel seals really.

Wurth flange sealant, orange and green. Ive used these a little on bmw timing covers, they take a while to seal and Wurth is great quality. Orange is for up to .020" gap, green is .010 but ive only tried the green before.

Elring anaerobic sealant, like what ive used before but Elring doesn't recommend it on gearboxes

Wurth grey Rtv; the best overal sealant ive used. But it doesn't have the longest life.

Thoughts?

Permatex anerobic should work, I've never had a problem with it. RTV always seems to leak (I've never used it but anything that comes in with it in the trans is always a mess). The factory used Hylomar, old school.

Wait, what didn't go perfect with that last trans and the Permatex? :)

I know the guy whose trans you did and he's pretty darn pleased. No leaks.

Nope the tranny case seems solid as anything! My CV joints are weeping a bit again but otherwise it's clean down there.

Agree 100%. I dont use anything else when sealing. I've used it with great success multiple times on my DeLorean transmissions, and other non-DeLorean transmissions I've resealed.

At a minimum you need to use something anerobic so that it will cure in the absence of oxygen.

Any good quality anaerobic sealer should work on the cases. Over the years I've used all the anaerobic products mentioned without any issues. For one of the 10 mm case center bolts that runs past the shaft bearings Hylomar is recommended.

I ended up using the Wurth green anaerobic and grey rtv on the large case through bolts. Hope it lasts!
