I need to replace my pick-up hose or perform the Home Depot spring trick. Here are my questions.

1. Is there any reason you couldn't just use standard fuel hose in place of the OEM style pick up hose? Is it a pressure thing?

2. Does anyone have pictures of the home depot spring? Or alternatives? I can't find it up here and other than the dimensions I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance!

The factory pickup hose has a pretty intricate shape to it, unless you are running a modified and/or relocated baffle, I doubt anything else will work. Dave told me the spring will work, but it's a PIA to get all the way into the hose.

I replaced my pickup hose last year with a new one, and I thought for a new hose, it was a bit soft, but after running this summer with constant 95 degree+ temps, it seemed to do ok.

No, it's totally stock.

Is it a tight fit? I watched Martin's youtube video and it looked like it might be possible.

It's not necessarily that it's an expensive part for what it is, it's that shipping it up here (to Canada) on its own would be expensive, and I don't really want to do a large order right now.

I have never done the spring mod, just repeating what Dave told me. It seems like a good idea however. Just be sure to get the pump orientated correctly in the tank seal when putting everything back together, also make sure the pickup hose is seated correctly, so it doesn't kink when the pump is reinstalled. It might be a good idea to take a pic of how it sits before removing.

Standard fuel hose is not fuel proof on the outside, only the inside. The outer jacket will dissolve in fuel. We've seen a few, it's pretty ugly.

Okay, that pretty much boils it down to a new hose or a spring.

Here is the article from the DML (http://www.dmcnews.com/Techsection/fuelhose.htm) about the spring. As you can see, it's 10 years old, so if anyone has a lead on a spring from a new source, I'd certainly welcome the input.

Do both the new hose and the spring. It's the safest option. This is what I did when my pickup hose ripped in half (it had the consistency of a wet paper bag). I can rest easy knowing that even after the hose one day goes spongy, it still won't collapse under suction. Barring disintegration into tiny pieces, it should last practically forever.

The spring is not hard to install, just stretch out a foot and a half or so, make sure there is no sharp end pointing out (I left the 90 degree bend in place that prevents the spring tip from contacting the hose, and stretched out the metal behind the first few coils), and slowly twist and push it through the hose. Nothing to it.

If your pickup hose is spongy, attempting to force a spring through it may rip it in pieces anyway. Do both and be done with it, and you can stop worrying about it later.

Or bills tuna can baffle/pickup hose. My vote is for a new OEM style pickup hose, it's not that hard to install. A tip is to pull the fuel sender during installation so you can get a look to make sure things are not kinked.

Good call, gentlemen.

I try to stay as stock as possible, but the new hose and spring is probably the way to go. After you breakdown in traffic... on a bridge.... at night.... it's just worth it to go 110%.

Admiralsenn, where id you get your spring from?

I may have to just drive into WA to find this thing.

I got mine at Lowe's, and Home Depot has it too. You are looking for a 9/16" (probably 16.5" long) screen door spring.

There's nothing really special about it, any hardware store should carry it - it's a common size if I recall right.

No hose -- my carriers and pickups are 100% metal. The only rubber in the tank is the pump boot. Nothing to collapse. Nothing to disintegrate.

Snap. I'll find it eventually.

Bill - thanks for the info. I'm going to go the OEM/stock route for now.

I put in a screen door closing spring from RONA. So far so good. PITA to put all the way in, but workable.

Cory!

I'm next door to a Rona right now! same dimensions I imagine? Do you recall which section it was in?

Also, did you insert it into the original hose?

What a coincidence!

Yes, it was around there. I didn't actually look at specific dimensions; it just looked like it would fit!

In my local Rona, it was near hinges and door/window hardware. Back near the contractor's desk.

I worked it into the original hose, yes. The hardest part is navigating those sharp curves, but you can do it with a bit of bending and light stretching.

Like a hot dog down a hall way?!

Okay I'm going to make like a new-born and head out.

How do you do this? I've got the spring now, but can't quite seem to figure out how it goes in…..
