Anyone used this filter in their Delorean? Did it have good results?

I've had mine for years with no problems you will not have any "results". The HP gain is next to nothing..some would argue it's non existent and others would say the K+N actually hurts you more than it helps you.

I read a pretty convincing test using OE vs aftermarket vs. K+N and the OE filters performed best for filtration and air flow, (can't remember the car or engine that was used in the study..it's in Google land though).

People will chime in, David T will tech you out, Vegas will write a book, but I don't think you need to put a lot of thought into it. If you believe in them go for it but you are just as good using a good paper filter.

Hi there,

I have one on my car, in fact, that's one of the first parts I get for all my cars. Like Michael said, you probably won't notice any difference on the 130 hp Delorean, but I think anything helps. I have experienced noticeable improvements on higher horsepower cars. Perhaps a K&N combined with a cold air intake will give some noticeable gains?

46120

On my Camaro, I used that combo, and I noticed a significant improvement, especially revving up and down. You can actually hear the air induction when you "tramp on it". K&N literature suggests that it increases power from 400 to 418. Not huge, but noticeable.

46119

So, when I got the D, I knew that it will probably help, even if it's not noticeable. In my opinion, it's $40 well spent.

Cheers!

the only thing the k&n drop in filter will do is give you a filter you can clean

no performance increase.

I was under the impression no cleaning or maintenance was required or recommended.

I don't believe you can still get a K&N filter.

Yes, this filter can be cleaned. The cleaning interval is approximately 100,000 miles, so it's not often. To clean, you simply spray the dirt and old (red color) filter charge oil out with a garden hose, let it dry, and then spray new oil on, just don't go overboard on the new oil, or use pressurized water or compressed air as you can damage the filter element. You can get this kit at your favorite auto parts store:

I think you can. Just search K&N 33-2726 . They are around $40. I found DMC had a better price so I got mine there.

As far as performance goes, I had mine on when I first started driving my car, so I didn't feel the difference. But I know mine is peppy, with quick revving.

I'm not trying to be a religious zealot, but I have literally felt the before and after difference in the filter on a Corvette and Magnum. The addition of a cold air kit in the Camaro was even more so. That's why I automatically installed one on the D before even driving it.

This thread reminds me... the Magnum filter will need to be cleaned soon, as it is at ~90K :wrenchin:

OP - you will normally get a larger response if you post questions in the General Discussion area as many forum members will only check that sub-forum first.

The FAQ subforum, like the FAQ section on any other website is to look up answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" not to ask fresh ones.

I got mine off of Amazon. Took only a couple of days to get. K&N is to each his or her own. I generally put OEM airfilters on but have this just in case years from now, I need one.

On a more serious note, not always, and not in this case especially.

There are tons of different comparisons & tests out there, but I never use reusable air filters because of the fine dust and silt in the desert. It's not a problem if you need the edge because you're actively competing for thousands of dollars of prize money in the Mint 400 or Baja 1,000 where you can then afford engine tear-downs to repair the damage. But I'm not about that life for a normal car. Especially modern ones with all the MAF & MAP sensors. So since I can't and won't use these filters, I've got nothin'.

I just ordered a K&N air filter for 5052. However, my choices were very limited as K&N is pretty much the only company that makes an air filter for the uniquely sized Peugeot 604 air cleaner. The original Peugeot style filters were a foam rubber, thus NOS examples are literally turning to dust!

It seems that K&N has discontinued their 33-2726 part number. It hasn't been available for a few years. I've been interested to see if there is a K&N filter for some other car that fits the DeLorean. I measured a NOS filter and used K&N's online catalog to match up the dimensions to other K&N part numbers. I found a filter for a late model Mercedes C class fits the DeLorean air box. Its part number 33-3072. It fits snugly and I don't see there being any issues.

Just my opinion, but having used K & N filters on other cars, they are expensive and any "performance" gains are so minute as to be undetectable. The only way they make sense is if you put a lot of miles on and instead of replacing them you can clean them and reuse them. Most Delorean owners don't put that kind of mileage on their cars and air filters are not expensive. The other problem is if you have the car serviced and they don't know it is a K & N and is cleanable, they will just throw it away and stick a new one in. K & N used to give you stickers so you could put it on the air cleaner so everyone knows it is a K & N but they don't seem to be doing that anymore.

I don't know why I'm surprised anymore, that people shoot down something that someone else went through lengths to find and help the community with.

But anyway, on a + note; I may not longer be running the stock PRV but when I did, and taking performance aside, I DID run a K&N filter for at least a decade. That is ONE filter, for at least 10 years, of course with cleaning. They hold up well and to me, was worth it so, thanks for finding that!

Nobody is shooting anyone down. The op asked for opinions and experiences. He got what I consider very truthful and fair assessments with both pros and cons. WTF did you want to hear?

It is not about appreciation, I was only making the alternate argument against using them. I would offer that if you used an ordinary filter and changed it as necessary, it would not have cost any more than that K & N filter and the cleaning kit. We aren't even figuring the time you spend cleaning it. If you are really trying to improve the breathing of the motor you would change out the whole induction system, it is very restrictive.

The only reason why I did all this was because I had some local club guys ask me about K&N filters. Bottom line they weren't being made anymore for our cars, and I found a filter that would fit. Price of something doesn't always dictate what people buy. If they want something they will buy it.

Agreed, I had my car on a dyno a number of years ago and performed a back-to-back test running standard filter vs a K&N filter. There was literally zero difference to power output between the two runs. The only benefit to a K&N filter in our application is the ability to clean and reuse them. Personally I went back to using a standard filter.

Agreed

The other issue is when they are "re-charged". If you do not know what you are doing they can be over-oiled and the engine will suck the oil in. On newer cars with MAF sensors this oil basically destroys the sensor. This is less of a concern with the delorean, but as a blanket statement I do not like running oiled filters on any of my vehicles.

Furthermore, the oil attracts alot of contaminants and dust. I find that to keep the filter looking and flowing reasonably it needs to be recharged every year. I saw a claim saying 100,000 miles - This is simply not true.

Many people in the car world like simple upgrades to make their cars better and more efficient. One of those upgrades is about making the car “breath" better...

Oh boy, another filter discussion.:) Chris, thanks for researching an alternate part for the one that's NLA.

Here are my thoughts:

Performance:
I've run K&N filters in 3 V8 cars which I've owned for more than 8 years. 2 of them I still own. On higher horsepower cars, the difference is noticeable. On the Delorean, not so much. As mentioned in another thread, I did notice improved throttle response. That alone makes it worthwhile to me.

Cleaning:
Cleaning is usually done at 50,000 miles for a filter that fits in the factory air box, and more often if you live in a dusty area. More info: https://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm
Just follow the instructions and don't apply too much oil. It's not that hard.

Oil used in the filter media:
After 11 years in service and 100,000 miles on my daily driver Magnum, I had to completely rebuild the engine due to another issue. But, when I took it apart, I found no ill affects from using the K&N filter. There was absolutely no damage done by oil in the intake or debris that was let in. None.

Stickers:
I got an assortment of stickers with every filter I bought. When I rebuilt the Magnum engine, I wanted to refresh the sticker and the warning label that it is a reusable filter. So I just called the K&N wrote an email to the customer service center and they sent me a whole new assortment of labels..free.

Bottom line. Performance air filters threads are like oil threads. Everyone has an opinion and their preference. It's your car, so use whatever is comfortable for you.

As for me, I use K&N filters. It's the first part I buy when I get a new car, and it's the last filter I buy for that car.
