Fuel pump hoses direction

Hello guys,

do you know what is the proper orientation of the fuel pump barbs (and so the hoses)?
I've seen some pics with those hoses pointing toward the rear of the car, and then making a "S" to the rigid fuel lines.
then I found this pic with the hoses pointing toward the front of the car http://support.delorean.com/kb/a23/how-to-access-fuel-pump-tank.aspx
my hoses have been mounted for a long time pointing more or less toward the passenger front wheel, but I realized they are pushed a little when I reinstall the access panel.
maybe it's not that important as long as you don't pinch the return line in the tank..

I don't know of any "correct" way to point those hoses, but I do agree with you that they can be prone to getting kinked or pinched if the routing doesn't go under the access panel quite right. Important too that if you replace any of the original screws keeping that access cover in place that you don't use ones with sharp points on the ends. Too close for comfort for me with the potential to prick one of those hoses while it's all snugged in there.

One thing that can dictate which way the fuel pump is rotated, and thus the barbs coming out the top to connect the hoses to, is which way the pick-up (suction) hose is pointing underneath. Sometimes when you hear of an owner having fuel pump issues in the hot summer weather, it can be related to the pick-up hose getting hot and mushy, and then if it is also pushed up against the side wall of the tank, it can get pinched off and starve the pump.

I don't remember if there is any play in how that all goes together as one rotating unit, but which way the hose on the bottom is pointing can affect your options on which way you end up pointing the ones on the top.

It's a close fit to reinstall the access cover, but it goes on. I put some self adhesive 1/16" felt pad on the underside of the access cover to prevent possible rubbing.
