Abandoned Delorean

Last night I was watching a cable channel called Viceland and the show was about nuclear. They were at an abandoned power plant in Washington State called Satsop (I think). Anyway as they were panning around I saw what looked like a Delorean partially covered by a torn tarp. It was all by itself with nothing around. Anyone out there in that area may want to look around and see if it is still there.

The unfinished Satsop nuke plant is less than ten miles from me! Can you pin down the car location at all? I will certainly check it out, but have been there many times without seeing anything like that. Never heard of Viceland. What channel was it on? Maybe I can do an "on demand" search and find it, and narrow down where the video was shot from.

I was at an antique store in Houston, and I come across this one guy's booth. He's missing toes that I can see, and another foot bandaged up with some freshly removed piggies. Says it's only happened since he's retired. Just getting old he guesses. I know this because he works it into our conversation. Anyway, he has this big, brushed metal sign that says "Westinghouse" and also has a logo on it. It's nice! Kinda DeLorean-eqsue. So I ask him about it. He tells me it came from out in California. "San Oh-no-fee, something or other" Something Spanish like that. Says this one came off one of the old nuclear reactors. After they shut them down, they had to ship all the steel out to Texas to be disposed of. He was picking through the scrap metal before he retired, and was able to sneak two of them out. He's already sold the other, and this is the last one, but he's willing to haggle.

Now the idea of having a bonafide nuclear souvenir is cool...until it dawns on me that this guy has may have been poking around and stealing contaminated scrap metal. As cool as it would be, I'm not exactly willing to stuff my garage with potential low-level nuclear waste from San Onofre after it's known reactor problems. Especially with this dude that's already missing extremities.

I only got a glance of it and it was partially covered with a tarp so I can't swear it's a Delorean. The show said they never fueled this plant so there shouldn't be any radiation. It seems like it was near the cooling towers in between some buildings. The channel is Viceland and the show is Abandoned. The actual channel # isn't important since everyone's service provider uses different # channels for their programing. From the picture posted it isn't a Delorean. Interesting place.

The plant was started in the 70's and never finished. Hundreds of millions spent and they closed it down. No nuclear materials were ever on site. Huge scandal known locally as "Woops" from the proponent's acronym of WPPSS (Washington Public Power Supply System). The site is now an industrial park with limited use. And that's more than any of you wanted to know.

I'll see if I can get a better look at the car.

At least they were smart enough not to ever fuel it. In Long Island NY they built Shoram and fueled it for testing and then shut it down. Cost a LOT more because of the radiation to decommission it. I always thought they should just convert it to gas, oil, or coal since they had all of the rest of the plant.

Diabetes was my first thought too. Granted though it's not the diabetes that's the problem as much as it the neuropathy. But he didn't quite mention diabetes, as suddenly open about his personal history as he was. Anyhow, no, I didn't get a photo. It was beautiful though. It was the Westinghouse logo on the left, followed by the name in the company's stylized font on the right. And it was all done in brushed aluminum to create different shade distinctions. It was probably about 2 foot high, and at least 4-5' long. Looked like this.

Honestly, as perfect a collectable that I really wanted, both a piece of nuclear history and looking so close to a DeLorean sign, I didn't feel comfortable buying it. It was taken out of a secure facility for disposal, and that was a red flag for me. Knowing too that place it came from had had multiple reactor problems in the past that led it's decommissioning didn't help my confidence either.

This was last summer, so I'm pretty confident it's gone by now. But I have PM'd you the information on the location of where it was.

We've got one of those here in middle Tennessee too, actually about 20 minutes up the road from my house. Whereas it looks like you guys can drive around the property at SATSOP, ours for some unknown reason is still heavily guarded with armed guards. We're talking black helicopter type of stuff!

I have a perfectly good "red" Fiestaware set that I would be happy to offer you. The whole set only puts off about 2445 CPM...the plate by itself puts off the max indicated amount ;)

Who am I, David Hahn? (of course not, he just died last week) Seriously though, I'm good. Nevada has all of the radioactivity that I'll ever need.

If you do want to unload it though, I'm pretty sure that the National Atomic Testing Museum will be more than happy to take it off your hands for one of their exhibits.
