View Full Version : Transmission 5-Speed Transmission leaking.

Took my transmission out about 2 years ago and drained the oil. It wasn't leaking then...

A week ago I filled it back up with oil and now it is leaking from this bolt. Why this leaks doesn't make sense since I haven't been using the transmission and this bolt is above the fill plug. Is there an easy way to fix this?

You can remove the bolt, clean it up and put it back in with some sealer.

What does that bolt do. May not be a good idea to remove it.

Case halve fasteners are torqued to spec and in set order. Not advisable to pull one out in this fashion.

IMHO you could remove it, reseal it and retorque it without causing any problems. Unless it is a large enough leak to warrant the work I would leave it alone. Make sure you have the correct type and amount of oil in the transmission and the vent is not plugged up first.

The leak is relatively small right now.

How do I tell if the transmission vent is plugged?

That bolt is way above the oil level. Leaking there is a surprise.

The vent hole is near the top of the transmission on the passenger side, in the flange that bolts to the bellhousing. If the small rubber vent plug is still there, remove it and clean out the hole with a small pick or by hand with a drill bit (don't drill it!!). The OEM plug is supposed to "float" in the hole but by now usually turns into a gooey mess and plugs the hole.

Thank you all for the help. Vent hole looked OK but cleaned it out just in case. My plan is to clean up the oil around the bolt and keep an eye on it. If the leak is very small I may let it go for now.
