Was wondering if anyone knew the paint codes for the bumpers? Grey and Black for the plastics
Also I need a rear drivers side fender, any idea what the cost would be for a used one? someone I know wants $400 for it

Since the original paint codes from the 80's are no longer valid, DMCH had some new codes made. I've linked the PDF file.

You can also look up ST-13-9/81. As mentioned you probably have to convert to newer codes since the paint systems have changed. $400 is a fair price for a rear quarter panel if it has no damage, only minor scratches that can be rubbed out. If it has the glass and the plastic trim, it is a good price. Shipping can be expensive so local pick-up can save you a lot of money. Most shops can now measure the old color and come up with a very close match. They use a computer to measure the color and it spits out the formulae to mix. Don't get it too glossy, the original was more of a matte finish than a smooth, glossy one. You will be surprised what a little bit of paint costs today!

Here's some more information:

http://support.delorean.com/kb/a80/paint-codes-for-fascias.aspx

I had not realized until reading this article that the black colour on the fascia was not paint at all, but in fact the natural colour of the urethane material the bumper is made from.

Has anyone had any success with getting the urethane black back to it's original look, or should any of us considering fascia painting just assume we'll need to paint the black portions too?

I just had my fascias painted, $1,500. Black sections were painted black as well.

Many shops will just paint the black section. Before you do that just try Black Again. It also works great on the rear louvers, the side mirrors, the plastic grills on the rear quarter panels, and the side rub strips.

Those formulas look to be single stage paint, which is OK, but if you really want something that will last use base/clear. The clear coat will have the appropiate amount of dulling agent mixed in to reproduce the proper factory sheen (unless you want high gloss).

I have the formula for the OEM paint codes here but this is for single stage urethane paint.

47960

Now here is the formula for base/clear in PPG (DBC2000). A few years ago, I took my car to the paint store and had them put the camera up to my bumpers just so we would have the formula in the base/clear(IMO much better)....which was lost in the talk archives deletion. This formula makes 1QT which should be more than enough to do both fascias, BUT it will match MY car's fascias. Being my car is a refurb, it's safe to say they are factory but paint does change color as it ages and how much sunlight it has been exposed to, so no spot work with this formula, just complete resprays.

649 Clear 83.4
1690 Crs. Alum. 303.6
1687 Med. Alum. 400.4
1683 Black 483.8
DX 685 flat 497.2
1607 Blue 502.8

These are cumulative amounts! The paint store will know what that means. Remember in base/clear the gloss or matt finish is controlled by the clear. If you are spraying urethane single stage you need to mix in the appropiate flattining agent into the color coat. In DBC the flatening agent(not to be confused with DX 685 in the formula) is mixed in with the clear.

Bare urethane lends well to being wetsanded and buffed out. If you go this route be sure to do it before painting the fascias.

Hi Jonathan,

I left the bottom of the fascias raw urethane and used Black Again on them, and they looked good. But I wasn't satisfied with the look of the main bumper portion as it still looked slightly faded, so I had that painted 2 stage SEM trim black with satin clear coat. Now, you can't tell which is painted versus not.

I got a serious bro deal. Big time. I had both fascias, the grill, even the DMC emblem, the lower lip under the rock screen all painted black, PLUS my front fascia's paint matched to the back for $500.

Or you could just skip the black paint all together and do them like this:

Likely help contribute to you having the nicest DeLorean in the world of course...

It was a huge bro deal. They just paid the painter for his time and materials and didn't make a dime off it.

This wetsanding refers to the black sections of the fascias. Agreeing this should work well.

I had my very-slightly fading black fascia sections wet-polished out with an orbital by a paint shop - and did not paint them - about 5 yrs ago. About a 20 minute job while I waited. That plus the Black Again or Meguiar's Natural Shine protectant a couple of times per year keeps a nice, original look.

As David T. says, the spray protectant works well on all of the black trim on the body. A little goes a long way.

None of the black parts on my car are painted. The mirrors, side vents, grill, etc. Is all unfinished. I like the idea of keeping it uncoated because you will always have to stay ahead of it. Single stage spray paint just doesn't hold up long term and it will have to be refinished to keep that freshly painted look.
I use a little black dressing (and I do mean a little) just to keep it looking new but not attract dust.

The engine cover and louvers as well as the bonnet compartment are done with a dual stage paint with a hardener mixed in. SEM trim black looks great but absolutely sucks as far as durability is concerned. If you are going to do it, do it with the right materials because 80% of a paint job is labor.

Why anyone would buy a DeLorean and then mute the finishes makes me scratch my head. This car was built to FLASH! Make it shiny, make it pop! Gloss black for the win!

Everyone has their own idea as to how their car should look. I saw one Delorean polished to a mirror finish! It was SHINY! Showed every speck of dust and fingerprints. The grained finish of the S/S is meant to trick the eye so you don't see so many tiny imperfections. Many owners just want to get the car back as close to the original finishes as possible. Others have more imagination. One great example of what you can do to customize a Delorean is Curtis's car. Noting wrong with wanting to make your car stand out. When I go to Delorean events, more that once I have tried to open someone else's car before I realized it wasn't MY car! No wonder my key didn't work!

+1 I appreciate tasteful variations along the theme, as much as I do correctness.
Michael, your car looks amazing, as does Matt's and Dave G's cars pictured in this thread. Hats off to the three of you.

Thank you! I would love to see Matt's car in person because on the pictures I have seen in other threads, that is the most lusterous and deep black paint I have even seen. I don't think I have ever seen a finish like that before either. There is something about it that I can't put my finger on but it really pops. I do remember him saying it was some super expensive BASF specialty paint.

My guy is expensive but turns out the best fascia's I've ever seen. Better than factory in IMHO and you can't do that without putting in the time and having the expertise and equipment/materials to match. Hands down the best!

I just had my bumpers painted using 2011 Jeep metallic grey topped off with a flat clear to protect the paint from UV. I'm very happy with the results and only cost $450 with the paint/clear. Of course I took off the old paint with a single edge razor blade, the paint was coming off in chunks anyway, then wet sanded with 220, then a can of Bulldog adhesion promoter. The black part was the easiest. Color sand with 1500/2000 grit by hand then buff by hand with 3m rubbing compound. Comes out almost perfect and high gloss that can be redone anytime you get a scratch. :race:

I need to get the font fascia redone on my car. The paint cracked when I tried to change out the headlight bulbs. A very sad day. :(

So I was test fitting my bumper, holding it on the car, when driver side drops. I was holding on to it from passenger side. It didn't drop hard, and of course it wasn't high up, these cars are low, but I was surprised it left those marks. Smh

Wow they look great. Did you pull them off or have them painted on the car? What paint did you use? This is exactly what I want mine to look like.
