Have Hervey's big metal air intake box? What's your review?

I've been thinking about getting one. I think they're pretty cool looking. I have heard something like some finagling that needs to be done to get it to fit right? Anyone have One that would share your experience with it?

First off please do a quick search about the reviews or rather complaints about Hervey. That might save you a huge headache. Personally I wouldn't buy a thing from the guy even if he promised to sell you gold bullion at scrap steel prices, and I know alot of others here that would agree.

It's way too expensive for what it is, needs a lot of refinishing work including you making a plexiglass cover The rods that are tacked on it to hold it on the lower cover need to have the threads cut about another 2" to fit, and you might have to wait a year for it to arrive.

There was one sold here recently second hand for what I considered a good price. If you are not in a hurry they pop up here from time to time and if you are in a hurry then you are SOL because it's a coin flip as to which way will be faster. That said I really like mine. Adds a flavor to the car that is not seen too often and has plenty of room for mods. (DMC labels and LED lights not included)

Hey Michael, did you get a thicker o-ring for the opening to the mixture control unit? The stock one was loose. I picked up some thicker ones at autozone, but I'm not sure if it's sealed as much as it should be. Also, since it's much taller, I had to make sure the lower engine cover clears the air box when it's closed.

Oh I forgot about that, yes mine was not quite as tight of a seal as i would have liked but I never changed it. Might be a good idea.

Oh I should have mentioned, the vent hose that attaches opposite the air intake has nowhere to plug into with the new airbox, so I made a bracket and got a stainless VC breather filter from Advance.

It is the same one. I'm pretty sure he sold out to Hervey. Back in the day Hervey used Putsch's pictures on Special T's site.

Varies with different cars, but in some cases (fresh motor mounts for example) the lower engine cover will ride on the Plexiglas cover cutting a groove in it.

Odd, since the plexiglass cover goes under the stainless lip I would have thought that would be impossible.

That means there was either a design change or some that were put together incorrectly. I've seen a few of them come in on cars in the shop(not at the same time so I have not looked at them side by side) and the ones with the problem definitely had the Plexiglas sheet held on top with two sided tape.

Mine came without the lexan so I cut it myself. It's a bit of a trick to get it under without scratching the soft plastic but it can be done (as long as you use thin 1/8" lexan). Actually it goes in very easy but it has to be turned a very percise way. Much like trying to separate those magician's locking rings.

Edit: just checked Hervey's page and it seems like you are right that they were assembled incorrectly...by me! The ones on Hervey's page (still wearing the Putsch Racing logo BTW) looks to have silver double sided tape with the lexan on top of the cleaner. I just assumed it went under especially since there was a welded support that looks to have no other purpose than to keep the lexan from falling. Mine is sealed with DS tape but it's all out of sight under the lip and clean.

I have and i really do like but for one, way over priced for what you get and what you have to do for it to be correct. For mine anyway, i had to make to mounting hole tab bigger because it didn't line up with the intake, going to have to install a thicker o-ring for a better seal and the biggest kicker would be the the lexan cover was rubbing the thin brace of the bottom of the lower engine cover, which in turn scratched the hell out of the lexan which now i need to make a new piece. Also had to use a blending pad to make it look better. It does allow more air in and im sure it helps out but i couldn't say i noticed power gains but maybe around top end? Who knows? Find one used if you can, it would be your best bet!

Yep, mine is on top and had to shave the the brace above to get it to fit and not rub. Cant notice it tbough.

$500 for this thing, and you still have to not only alter your cars to make it fit, but construct it, and then fabricate additional things to make it function properly?

You know I could go on a rant using the same variables about someone spending 30k for a oddball car with limited support and questionable quality and performance. The answer is some of us comprimise to get the air cleaner that's a bit different....just like we comprimised when we bought the car.

Good idea. Crankcase ventilation is bad enough by design and leaving this hose out of the intake doesn't help.

It is. Casey's fabricator tripled the price overnight so he stopped making them. Hervey then got with Casey and took over making the airboxes. Eventually Casey was removed from the process/profits of his own doing leaving all rights to Hervey and subsequent design changes.

Glad this question has come up again. I have this air box, and like Michael I added a VC breather filter as there is no accommodation for the hose that normally goes to the stock air box from the oil filler cap.

I see that someone added a hose barb to their air box. Is that the preferred solution if possible.

Just make sure the hose barb is on the correct (clean) side of the filter. Like the stock one is (through an internal tube). This is where air goes into the crankcase. If you just punch a hole in the side of the box above the filter, you'll be pulling dirty air into the engine crankcase. The tiny separate filter may be a better solution.

It's probably worth noting that under high load the air flow is reversed as crankcase pressure increases and metered orifice vacuum source decreases.

Under those circumstances it is advantageous to have the larger vent tube connected to the lower pressure intake as opposed to a breather filter. This will assist in the removal of blowby gasses, lessening the chance of oil leaks and offering minor improvements to ring seal.
