Swayze's book has one of the most flattering accounts of Delorean driving in print. He clearly loved the car.

I hope detailed pictures of this car emerge before it invariably disappears into a private collection. I've always been curious about it's current condition, etc.

That car will probably go for way above market value because of it's unique provenance. On cars such as this, condition is not going to be the major factor determining value. As an example, the Johnny Carson car was in pretty sad shape but it was still worth a lot of money. Cars once owned by celebrities are not valued as cars, they are valued as personal articles owned by the celeb and can go for multiples of what an "ordinary" car would be worth.

Well I don't know about that. It really depends on who you are, doesn't it? Celebs often try to trade on their connection at BJ and it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference unless you're Steve McQueen or something.

fnzn was his brother in law, but it has been months since he posted here...

Good springboard for a conversation. Did celeb connection help or hurt the last BJ auction?

(Frankly, I'd pay less for that association.)

even less:

"On 08/26/14 CARFAX shows a California damage report. Vehicle involved in a rear-end collision, airbags did not deploy. "

Some celebs do trade on their status and try to make money off their personal things. Others don't and that makes their things all the more valuable since there are less things. Some won't do it while alive while the people handling the estate try to maximize it by selling it all off. In general a celeb's things will sell for more than the item would be worth otherwise. That is why they advertise it as once owned by the celeb. I would bet there are some who would bid and buy his Delorean even if they are not all that interested in Deloreans but because it was his, they want it. And not knowing what one is worth would pay too much for it and be happy to get it. We'll see.

Sad shape? That's just not true. Actually, that's not even remotely true. As someone who has spent countless hours around the Carson car when Cliff owned it, I can say that the only wear on that car was the driver seat where Johnny's handgun rubbed the dye off the leather. Other than that, this sub-10,000 mile car is nearly mint condition and I am sure the Sheas are keeping it that way.

I was parked next to it in Cleveland back in 2000 for the DCS concours. I don't know who owned it at the time but it was not in the best of shape then.

I think you need to check your facts. That car was and is in pretty excellent condition.

Like Patrick, I had the privilege of spending a lot of time with the Carson car. I spent a particularly large amount of time with the car in 2008. In the months preceding the 2008 DCS, the show had very few concours entries registered (only 2 including Ken). As you know, Cliff (the then owner of the Carson car) was heavily invested in DCS along with Ken. For the sake of the show and having participants in the judging, Cliff was planning to enter the Carson car in the Concours judging. The car was still all original, never restored. I spent a full day going through the car with the Millennium Concours manual, doing a mock judging, and making a short list of any small items we could clean or correct between the car. The car did not need much at all. In the end, when the show rolled around there ended up be about half a dozen entries so Cliff decided not to have it judged, due to judging time constraints (so as not to take away from the other Concours cars). Regardless, I am 100% positive that it would have scored at least a bronze certification, if not a silver certification.

I'm not sure what your definition is of "not in the best shape," but to me, any car that will score in Concours is in pretty good shape. I'm sure the Sheas would validate this and plan to keep it that way.

Obviously the car has been cleaned up since 2000. Back then it looked complete but in dire need of a through detailing. AFAIK it didn't even place in that concours. I am glad the current owner is giving the car the attention it deserves. BTW although it is known as the J/C car, he never actually owned it. He did have it, use it, and drive it but he did not own it personally. It was given to him for publicity purposes and that kind of backfired when he famously got stuck.

It was a company car that was assigned to Carson as a $500,000 investor in the company. And this car in question is the second company car that was assigned to him (and the one in which he got his famous DUI in.) The first car had a gas flap and did leave him stranded when the Ducy alternator died.

From this list it's VIN 500, setting aside the pilot cars:

VIN 500 is probably still at the Case Western Auto and Avaition Museum in Cleveland. Their webpage still has a photo of a DeLorean on it.

Per the pictures the vin is 5307. Gray interior, 5-speed with a gas flap hood. Identical options combo with my 5052.

I'm sure there is an interesting story of how Patrick Swayze got a gas flap hood for his car.

New retirement plan...borrow a dump truck of cash and buy many DeLoreans. Give them to clebs for their own personal use for one year and 10k to keep them healthy for 12 months. At the end of the year collect cars and sale, BOOM:

DeLorean for sale, previously owned by

Christopher Walken
Al Pachino
Patrick Stewart
Hugh Jackman
Vin Diesel
Andy Dick

$81,875 total with premium.

Just to put this in perspective ... at least from a cash perspective.

Article Quote:

"A black leather jacket worn by the actor in 1987’s “Dirty Dancing” was sold for $62,000 even though it was estimated to fetch only $6,000.

The surfboard used by Swayze in the action thriller “Point Break” went for more than $60,000, while his private sports car, a 1981 DeLorean, was sold for $81,250.

A silk shirt and a pair of sneakers he wore in “Ghost” went for a little less than $18,000."

So, both the jacket and the surfboard each sold for more than most "top tier" DeLoreans,
and the sale price of the silk shirt could have easily purchased a good daily driver DeLorean.
