So this isn't me offering an actual replacement...but an alternative I hope one can come up with.

The existing netting always seems so...ghetto. Mine is always lopsided with weird stretches and so on.

Has anyone ever looked into a replacement? Personally my thought is something that can be mounted to the existing system, but is closer to the kind of stuff you see in window blinds in cars like BMWs to limit the sun.

In the case of the DeLorean...you'd just pull it out by hand and clip it to the existing hooks.

Someone rebuilt theirs once by replacing the thick bungee cord around the netting since that was the only part that got deformed and stretched out.

See that's the thing though....my bungee is fine. It just never links well with the hooks along with the net itself.

I feel like it's a failure to define how the net and bungee should be aligned. A BMW window shade style net would eliminate that.

Interesting... I have no problem with mine... Is it a little fiddley? I guess... But with a little care you can get everything lined up and avoid weird stretches. At that point the occasional unhooking of one corner to put stuff back there should be easy enough.

Personally I love the look - it is of it's era. My advice - Spend a little time getting it adjusted correctly. After all you wouldn't junk an entire fuel injection system for a carb just because it takes a little work to get it functioning properly.

Cheers

I might be stating the obvious but DMC have NOS luggage nets in stock - and they look absolutely fantastic and well worth the current $61.80 asking price.

My net was frayed on the right bungee cord so I replaced it with this one a few weeks ago. I love that the elastic band that surrounded the net in the bag had decomposed with age. A brand new 35 year old part.

Note that it takes a while to even out the net and align the hooks so that it has a consistent diamond pattern and looks tight. Well worth taking the time to do it properly.

I have never used my net, so I leave it out. It always just seemed to get in the way of whatever I was trying to put on the shelf. With it gone, I can open the door, throw my six-pack on the shelf, and drive.

I replaced and restrung the elastic shock cord in my cargo net last summer. I never could get it hung up just right without it looking stretched and warped in places, so I just kinda gave up and let my wife take over. After about 30 minutes of various trial and error, she got it to look absolutely perfect. After we were both satisfied with the look, I took very small BLACK zip ties and placed one on each side of each hook along the back wall. I trimmed the tails off of them, and they are virtually invisible. If I ever have to take the cargo net down for anything, all I have to do is look for the space in-between the zip ties and that's where it's supposed to go over the hook. Works for me.

You can buy 3/8" diameter black shock cord on Amazon dirt cheap.
