So here is my 3d printed double din radio and climate control panel all ready for a test fit. Assuming this works the way I visioned I will make one out of metal. I'm having some difficulty getting my 3d scanner to get a good detail of the climate panel so that I can dissect it and move the parts where I need them. Until then here is a picture of just the panel, Ill try and mount it tonight and see how things fit.4916849167

Here is the first test fit of the panel. The 3D printed part is delicate since it had to be printed in three pieces, but after installing the side plates was rather stiff. I have some minor clearance issues. The climate controls need to come up ever so slightly assuming that when I added material thickness for the 3d printer it did not affect anything. The console itself will need to be tweaked a bit as well since it has a step in it for the original panel. Since mine needs to be repaired anyway this should be no problem. The real problem is actually the simplest, How in the world do you get the center air ducts installed around those boots. lol Anyway, here is a picture I took of it last night.

That looks, well great. I wanted to have my headlight and hazard switches still on the console. I'm using a KEnwood radio and the display opening is much smaller than the double din bezel. Almost 0.750 This obviously saved me enough room to mount the switches next too it. I ordered replacement switch labels from DMC UK so that my headlight symbol will be oriented correctly.

What are your plans with the acrylic panel? I'm thinking of printing it out of a plastic similar to soda bottles. Will be transparent to pass light, and still smooth so I can adhere a vinyl overlay for the labels and black background.

I figured your headunit must have been a bit smaller to have room on the side for switches. That would be nice to have that space but mine is a full double din unit.
I went a different route. I ripped a HVAC panel out of an old ford f150, it wired up without too much problem. Here is a picture of it in progress before I punched out the hole for the stereo.

That is pretty clever, Do you have any detailed pictures showing how you installed it? Also, is the ford vac actuated for the different positions. I thought of using a vw piece but everything on them is cable positioned.
As for my radio, it is a standard double din, I just did not use the bezel to mount it. The bezel is what required so much extra space. Not sure why it was designed this way, perhaps for air cooling space.

THe ford unit is "the same" as the delorean unit in terms of the inner workings. The fan switch is electrical, the temperature is cable driven, and the mode switch is vacuum operated. The mode switch was some trial and error but I just plugged in the hoses. The fan switch worked after comparing wiring diagrams. I am still working on the temperature control. I can take a picture next time I have it apart.

Any updates on the double din installs?

I just got the latest Crutchfield catalog and now there are options where you can control your radio in a touchscreen app on your phone or Pioneer now has a remote touchscreen that you can mount anywhere so you can mount the control unit anywhere. A Double-Din adapter in the dash is no longer necessary.

Unless, you know, you want a Double-Din radio.

I'm working on an install for this radio right now (the DMH-C2550NEX). Just trying to iron out the details on the enclosure so it looks like it belongs on top of the center console.

Wow josh, that looks nice! Do you miss your headlight and emergency flasher buttons and indicaotor lights for lock doors and defrost at all?

Thats why I said "mostly finished" LOL!

I still need to work those two buttons into the shifter plate. Alternatively the middle knee pad.

I still need to make measurements, but i'm leaning towards having the temp and blower mode dials on the bottom with the two headlight and emergency flashers between them and then put the fan speed switch where the dash dimmer switch it. Otherwise headlight and emergency flasher in the two dummy switch spots. I'm maybe toying with the idea of perhaps making the horn switch on the stalk the headlight switch and then putting the horn switch on the center pad like a normal car. In the few times i've needed to hit the horn in traffic it takes me too long to remember where it is and i wind up hitting the stalk button too hard snd too late. I like the mods i've seen of the headlight switches on the kned pad, but i have long legs, so that wouldn't work for me. I've also toyed with somehow eliminating a general use headlight switch and just have the lights auto turn on when the car is running. The only time i wouldn't want them on is if for some readon i was limping home with a bad alternator or i took it to the drive in movies, so an out of the way switch would work. I just don't know if i'd want to use my headlights that much, i'd cut the bulbs lifespan in half. I actaully enjoy pressing the button to turn the headlights on, i just hate pressing it to turn it off because 2 outta 5 times i forget to turn them off and have to climb in to shut them off!

I’m thinking about doing the same thing. Have you measured already to see if the screen would block your view looking out the windshield if you mounted it on top of the center console? Or are you planning something else? Have you put together a plan for how you would mount it? Thanks

If you're taller than a toddler, it won't block your view :) I have dual gauge pods on the console that are just about the same height. No issues.

I'm (slowly) building a 3D printed mounting system but might get some fiberglass or laser-cut aluminum involved on the final design. I'll remove the console cover and attach the lower support to the metal stereo/vent frame. I want something that reasonably looks like it belongs, feels solid, but can be serviced in-place easily.

FABombjoy, I think this is the route for me also. Would you share your design with me and perhaps get two of the brackets if you have them done somewhere? What do you think you will put in place of the radio? I suppose the hidden radio would go in there but on the surface perhaps a LED acrylic emblem or something ?

Let me see how far I can get with it. It'll probably be some time though.

In my car I'll be installing an EFI-specific gauge and controls for heated/cooled seats, so I can't be of much help.

Figured out a solution for the headlight and hazard light switches. I am fairly pleased with the result.

A bonus: locating the cruise switch in a nice accessible area for the driver. I do not like the column mounted switches, they look cheap to me.

That looks great! What is the material you used to make the black bass for the switches? And how did you go about shaping that and mounting it? Thanks

Dammit all, a FORD HVAC panel?! Who are you, Bill R?!

:p

In all honesty, that looks awesome! Wish I would of thought of that.
