Quick Lug Nut question

Sometime from someone during the last 10 years I bought a full set of lug nuts. They are larger in appearance than stock, a shiny chrome look and judging from their failures, its a chrome cap. One by one the caps are either breaking free or coming off into the socket. :deviltail:. Luckily you can still get the underlying bare lug off. "So far" I saw the ones DMC offers and they kinda have the same appearance so I backed off on buying them.

Are these chrome caps that are welded,pressed on? If so, I want SOLID quality lug nuts.
Where, who, any info on some please let me know. Thanks......
If it matters I have the early vin dark grey wheels.

6 yrs old but I will look into that.Thanks :read:. I did see the SpecialT picture and I am almost 100% certain those are the ones that I have /had that the cover comes loose on.

Several years ago Josh put in an order for 5,000 stainless steel single piece (no cap) lug nuts that match OEM specs (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?10413-New-DMCH-reproduction-lug-nuts-anyone-have-them&p=153750&viewfull=1#post153750).

I haven't heard an update on them yet to know if they ever arrived. To my knowledge this was the closest we came to a perfect lug nut.

Good to see some very familiar characters that go way back.

I have been mia for a while from the forums due to injury to my lower back, no more helicopters for me, but its great to see the community is still so strong and responsive. I really appreciate the replies and placed my order today for 2 door handles. The drivers side finally broke so I am going to jump back in the fire and tackle it. In the meanwhile I hope to be able to maybe help a few people out and pay it forward.

I just found a great deal on eBay on a full set (20) of the specific OEM Honda lugs that Michael originally posted about, the 90304-SA5-013 - for $30. I do see that the seat is not quite the right shape but I'm willing to give it a try since now all but 2 of my second set of Hervey lug nuts have lost their caps, again.

Yeah, he seems to still be out there. His site has had an overhaul since I last saw it, but it's still full of the same bravado as always. FWIW, I got his "Stainless" nuts back in like 2012 and they stuck out so far they looked like those pointy ones that truckers put on the wheels of a Peterbilt. After much hassle, I returned them to him (I've sold thousands of sets and no one has ever said they stick out before! You must have aftermarket wheels or something!") for a set of "His" pressed-cap OEM style ones. They were the exact same metric nuts you can get at any CarQuest and fell apart basically instantaneously, but I was beyond the desire to fight that battle again. Been losing caps (my apologies to every other driver who I share the California roadways with) ever since and waiting for something better to come along.

I had very high hopes for DPI Josh to actually come through with reproduction, OEM style but solid stainless nuts. But that was years and years ago, and he frequently writes uncashable checks WRT ideas like this. So, Honda it is. Will report back.

I could write a small book on the dealings with John, Some great, some good and some horrible. From a fuel pump running strong since 07 to losing a $1000+ check. From quick shipping to month long delays and forgotten orders. Having new shock absorbers "EZ RIDER IIRC" collapse and being told "Uh, I guess the collars should have been tighter. You are the 1st to really use them. " From " I am only one man doing the best he can, I gotta go. To " I just did a inventory and did you ever send me back XYZ?" into a 30 minute rant. Only to discover he OWED me parts.
I once bought his super duper high voltage alternator which never worked right leading to a month long gremlin hunt. Only to find out the gearing wheel was not spinning fast enough to produce said voltage. That was my last order and rather than bother returning it and hearing his worn out reasoning, I took this $150 boat anchor and did just that. Its now 250 ft down in Lake Murray.
I could go on and on but for my health and sanity will leave it there. Still, dealing with John is a delight compared to the now doa Delorean One in CA where I was sized up to see if I was worthy but thats another story.

Some of the local owners and I were just wondering where you'd gone at an event last week. We used to see you pop up all the time with this or that product announcement and then nothing! Maybe a DPI revival thread over in the vendor area is called for. I know I've got a small list of things I'm still hoping you'll come up with that I doubt anyone else ever will.

Oh, jeez - put me on the spot... guess it's fair play since I started this. Well, I'm not personally after them but I know there was a lot of anticipation that you might one day have replacement body panels. That's a super tall order though, which I get.

The lug nuts were a big one for me, for sure.

I also have a bent up shift lever mechanism (105811, https://store.delorean.com/p-8615-gearchange-assembly.aspx ) which are basically impossible to get. Bent mine back into place for the most part but it will never be like it should.

This may be a silly one to ask from a stainless guy, but binnacles, dashboards and center consoles. Again, mine are all ok, for now, but time marches on and you seemed to have the drive and the fab skills/connections to get something made that future generations (or even future me) could be proud to install.

Oh dang. Someone found out and guessed it. Ok, I confess. I'm a minority shareholder of DPI. It is also true that my VIN 5000 will have every single DPI product offering known and unknown to the community at large. I don't think Josh will mind if I say that the car has hundreds of custom parts that have not been seen or spoke of previously anywhere. Heck, I haven't seen the car myself with all these awesome products installed. Therefore, Josh isn't "allowed" to show the community before I see it and drive it myself. In the past, there have been those that say certain products from DPI don't exist. However, the community got to see an EFI twin turbo car and stainless frame at the last DCS (both belong to me). I assure you all these products are real. Just be patient and soon enough you all will see what DPI has been up to.

The one on the left started to bulge on the top when I was tightening it down.

No, I don't see anything like that. One of the earlier posters on this thread did mention the nuts bottom out a bit on the front studs, but it certainly didn't produce those kind of results for me. How tight did you go? Remember, only 60lb-ft

The top started to bulge before I had it tightrned down all the way! Maybe we got different lugs. Maybe the seller we got them from was selling different parts under the same number and didn't realize it.

Honda makes three depths of this nut, the Short, Medium and Long. Short is the one we need, medium would stick way out. So I think we got the same ones. I will double check my wheels when I get back home.

Never use washers on the lug nuts. The holes in the rims are countersunk and the lug nuts are supposed to fit into them. In fact, you must be very careful if you replace the lug nuts. There are different angles to the lug nuts that fit into the countersinks and if you use the wrong angle they will not fit to the rims properly and tighten up correctly. If you do not use the correct lug nuts, add washers, or not torque the nuts correctly, the end result is a wheel coming off. These are considered "Critical Fasteners" and you must use the correct ones and torque them correctly. If you buy from the Delorean vendors you can be assured you are getting the correct lug nuts. If you buy them anywhere else it is up to YOU, the buyer, to make sure they are correct for your application.

Yeah dont do that.
The honda lug nuts are not proper anyway, they have a radius seat, the rim needs a tapered seat.

I'm still just hoping someone makes a suitable replacement nut for once. A limited run that no one has the chance to buy doesn't count. Crap nuts with crap press-caps that fly off after 50 miles don't count. Nuts that stick out like buck toothed fangs don't count. These Honda ones are the best alternative I have personally found, though I am cognizant of the seat differences. There just isn't anything better that I've found.
