starter clean up or rebuild

Just removed the starter as part of my exhaust upgrade. It is absolutely filthy. I am thinking of bringing it to a local starter/alternator shop for a cleanup and possible rebuild. It worked perfectly fine before removal.
Any advice?

For probably the same cost, upgrade to the Remy Eagle starter. It's half the size, half the weight, gives you more room to work with when you're in there and leaves your PR starter as a back up.

When the starter was out i spent a lot of time cleaning the block with brake clean and a wire brush. It looks nice now. The eagle starter sounds a bit nicer too and I like shedding some weight off the back end.

I always clean everything while I am doing maintenance. Also makes you alot more familiar with the car!

Brakcleen is very toxic. It should be used sparingly. To clean the block a product like Gunk is better. You should not use a steel wire brush to clean aluminum. Tiny steel particles can imbed themselves into the aluminum and rust.

All those solvents are toxic David, that's why they work so well. That's like saying aspartame is better than sugar. Pick your poison.

While it is true they are all dangerous, some are a LOT more dangerous than others. And some are dangerous in different ways. Toluene, Acetone, Lacquer thinner, and MEK are great solvents too, but they are also very dangerous and toxic. Generally you want to use the least toxic stuff you can that works.

Or you could also use the product intended for this specific task. Just make certain that you work in a well ventilated area (outside), wear nitrile gloves, and at least safety goggles.

Rebuilt Remy starter has arrived. I am guessing I have to attach a bullet style wire 49564connection where the pencil is pointing?

John, with the Eagle starter both of the thin gauge wires can be spliced together and attached to the smaller posts. Or the bullet connection can be re-wired with a ring terminal and attached to the small post. When I did mine, I wired both thin gauge wires together, and soldered to larger single wire lead.

Correct, I forgot there were two wires on that original ring terminal. So all three wires can be combined onto a single ring terminal.
