Pilot at 1:36/2:25 gives a good view of the original sliding window (obviously not the same car in the BBC reporter's storyline). Note the development front suspension height.

Pilot at 2:16 has no sunshade or body side mouldings (again, not the same car in the BBC reporter's storyline).

Whenever I see movies, pictures or clips with a bunch of cars sitting around in massive groups I often think to myself, "I wonder if one of those is 3205?"

That would be cool.

Seeing a British autorack being loaded convinces me all the more that the front suspension height was raised at the eleventh hour to accommodate American autoracks. Ours are loaded/unloaded quite differently (the whole deck does not drop).

Someone went a little light on the rear bumper pad cellotape....

now i thought the gold cars were never to be driven, and no fluids ever filled. maybe just one was made to drive then.

what a great video

Two possibilities... That gold car had a black interior. This would either make it the Snyder TX car which claimed to have never had any fluids. OR is is one of the pilot cars which was painted gold for the promotional purposes of the real 24k cars.

The Reno car with the tan interior has around 600-800 miles on it I think, and the '83 Maryland car has I think 1000-2000 miles. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

That was AWESOME. I well remember Wendy Austin on TV, and her sentiments about first seeing them on the transporter match mine to a T.

Whatever happened to the car she was driving - RIA 7126? It features in many of the media ads of the period, but seems to have disappeared - maybe a new reg number, or maybe came to the US at some point

hm, the one in the video doesnt look like the prototype used for the promos, it had the sliding windows and a gas flap:
4922

the one in the video looks to have a black interior; watch from c. 3:45 to 4:05. to me the interior looks to be too dark to be saddle brown (note binnacle, steering wheel & seat headrest color compared to the driver's suit & hair color):
4923
an image of the saddle brown interior for comparison:
4924

soooo, that would make the Gold D in the video VIN 4301, which was supposed to never have any fluids in it. :confused0:

my question is this: werent the DeLoreans driven off at the end of the assembly line?

i could be wrong. of course, the gold ones couldve been an exception...

The famous AmEx promotional materials used photos of a stainless car. (If memory serves, it was the Visioneering car.) Color was then added to the photos.

The Gold DeLorean in Snyder did have fluids and was driven - don't know how that urban myth ever got started. When it was removed from the bank in Snyder it had a few hundred miles on the clock iirc.

thank you john. i suppose this is where the rumor started (this site has been online with this info since at least 1996 when i first visited it (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?935-My-First-Documented-Musings-on-the-DeLorean)):

Quote from: Gold DeLorean Car of Texas (http://www.bigtexas.com/dmc/)

"In a Bank in Snyder, Texas there is a 24 Karat Gold DeLorean Car. I've never seen anything like it. The more questions I asked about it, the more I wanted to know. It can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in eight seconds without spinning the wheels and get an average 27 miles to each gallon of gasoline. Its stainless steel body is gold-plated. There are zero miles on the odometer. It has never had fuel in the tank. And it’s only one of two left like it in the world. The DeLorean car sits in a locked glass showcase in the lobby of the Snyder National Bank..."

does this mean i cant believe everything i read on the internet?
