My first post to the group. Just wanted to introduce myself and my car. I picked it up a couple months ago. VIN 4529. Its an October build car. Gray Auto. The car is in great shape. Really looking to get started brining it back on the road. I am not going to keep the car factory so the motor and trans will be for sale. I guess they're for sale now but I was going to make the car run for a short video but if someone was interested in the parts as they are, I'd certainly sell them. The only other thing it needs right off the bat is the passenger side torsion bar snapped. We have the replacement and will be doing a full roof box repair this weekend. I'll post pics as we go along. My buddy, powerline84 who I am sure most of you have been watching with 2706, will be along for the ride.

So since you're selling off the engine and transmission, what is your plan for the drivetrain?
And welcome to the forum!
Also I agree, you'll definitely be able to ask more for you engine and transmission if you can first prove that they actually run.

asked the question before I could.
I hope its not an LS swap... so lame... 8)

You should ask the mods to move this to build thread section. People will want to salivate over delicious pictures of the delorean carcus.lol

That's the hope so that it'll help bring this car back. I'm a big fan of LS motors but I dare to be different here...
The desire is to use a Porsche 928 V8 as it was the motor used for the sound effects in the movie when Doc shows Marty the car in the parking lot. I'm still doing research as to which V8 it actually was and if it will work. I'm of the opinion that if you're hard headed enough, anything can work, we'll see.
I guess I should start a build thread. Rook move....

Youre certainly a sucker for punishment if you want to drop one of those old 5 liters in there. But if you want to be different it certainly does the trick.

As the owner of a 1987 Porsche 928, I would say that you would have to be INSANE to use the engine in ANY car!
Parts prices are ridiculous and it is a very complicated engine brimming with cutting edge 80s technology....which makes it not easy to work on. Certainly there have to be much better modern choices?
Glad I got that off my chest!

Having owned several 928's I have to agree with John U in that you will spend more money and time chasing gophers than Carl Spankler from Caddyshack. It will take more time getting the engine running correctly vs. fitting the engine into the car.

Hell, if I were doing an engine swap, I'd install a 4.3 LV3 in there. The motor would fit better than an LS since it is a 90* v6. Alas, the sump would have to be changed, and there are no bolt-in front sumps available...
As for the transaxle, I would try a 5hp19 tiptronic. I have no idea if it would actually fit in the DeLorean chassis though.

As a more affordable and les wonky alternative to using a porsche (glorified vw) motor....may I suggest some from Ford's Escort line of cars....... You said you wanna be different....
Anyhoo...Welcome and look forward to seeing your progress :)

Calling the Porsche V8 a glorified VW motor shows your utter lack of knowledge on the subject. The 928 was the first "clean sheet" design that was not built using VW or Audi parts or design.

Getting the engine running before selling is a smart move.
I see the car has recent AL tags - is that where you got it? Are you in AL too? Another local-ish owner

Ha! Well after reading all of this, now I absolutely will figure out how to get the 928 motor to happen. I'm not being a smart ass or a douche boys but you motivate me.

The car came from Kansas City and I brought it to South Alabam. I'm stationed here with my good friend powerline84. We're both heading back to upstate New York in the next couple weeks though.

Hahahahahaha or you could just send all your extra cash to me....or burn it....or install a 928 engine!
Here is an example of the parts costs. Last year I did an intake refresh on my 928...similar to what is known around here as the valley of death. I decided to change the plastic chain guides because they were brittle and caused a blown engine in my friends car earlier. (They get old, brittle and fall apart). Four tiny 3inch long plastic guides cost me almost $400!!
The engine also has one of the longest timing belts ever on a production car with a crappy hydraulic tensioner that has to be retensioned once after being installed (after 500miles I think). Belt snaps or jumps...you are screwed! Previous mechanic tightened it too much in order to make the warning light disappear...cam gear wear. I had to replace both mine. ($500x2)
Do what you want, but there have got to be better and cheaper ways to get 300hp into a delorean. If you do decide to do it, make sure you create a build thread!!!

There are definitely "better" choices I'm sure. Easier seems to be the go to response here. I can't believe someone actually said an Escort motor....I hope it was a joke haha. We'd really like to put a Coyote in but simple math tells me to make that work, I'm gonna need fresh batteries for the sawzall.

There is an owner currently swapping in a 2.2L ecotec. Will be the first 4cyl swap, very exciting.
The coyote is a very big engine. Like you said it would be hard to make it fit width wise. However still a better idea than the 928 heart. But be different, make it happen. haha
I wouldnt go as far as saying any sort of swap is "easy". It takes a lot of work. Due to the drivetrain configuration its a little more involved than pulling one engine out and bolting another in like so many domestic vehicles.

Absolutely. Swaps look fun and simple on tv so they must be in real life right???

What I've learned from the maker movement is that you just put the parts into place and hot melt glue will do the rest.

Porsche M28 4.7L 928 engine in my car. With the cam boxes it would be very tight plus the crank pulley would need to be shortened down to one serpentine belt to save space. Did this about 7 years ago.:neener:
As a Professional fabricator that has done engine swaps and have built/worked on 928 race cars, I will state YES this is a doable swap. It wont be easy or cheap obviously and it will need few updates to make it all livable. I have a price in mind if you's like me to do it........

Well that answers the question of whether or not it's been done before..
I greatly appreciate the offer Sir but I have a strict clause in my vehicle maintenance policy that vlearly states, only pay someone else to work on your car if your hands are broken or have been removed. If your willing though I'd love to talk with you more about specifics.
Cost comes up a lot with swaps. I'm curious, what is "expensive"? I'm a diesel guy so expensive to me is doing a 24v Cummins with a 4r100 on an old square body Chevy to the tune of 10k. When we're saying, this 928 swap will be expensive, what are we really talking?
Clint you crazy man. I never knew you mocked that up.
To do a full custom engine swap in a delorean (not another prv etc) I would budget anywhere between 6 and 10k, speaking from experience. The engine is always the cheapest item, its everything else that nickles and dimes you up to the total.

Agreed, I would estimate the same plus 40% Porsche Tax.

DIY, a shop would charge atleast $25k on top for labor and it would take 6 months to do it and work out issues.
Take for example the ongoing saga of the "Worlds fastest Delorean", he started the swap in what Feb? I commend the guy that did the actual work and transferred the engine in just a few days but its been a few months and the car still has no working gauges, huge tuning issues, and he just blew up his clutch. All that using a LS engine, one of the most used engines for swaps that has a multi million dollar aftermarket support industry.
Nicholas R

If you're including the cost of doing the auto to manual conversion, then you better budget $10,000 at a minimum. It will probably take around $2,000-$3,000 just to get all the parts you need for that transmission swap. $10k will probably get you driving, but not necessarily complete (because it will never be complete).
This is all excluding the Porsche factor though. The numbers above would be if someone was sure about replicating mine or Josh's swap by themselves. If you're really talking about Porsche parts, that could definitely add some cost. Though if you are doing a Porsche engine, then consider buying one with a Porsche manual transmission and see if you can get the drivetrain all together.

A 928 engine, eh? Speaking as a guy who used to work at DEVEK (928 people know what that means), those v8s are sweet but... the earlier motors are more likely to fit than the 32-valve, 4-cam monsters. Those barely fit into a 928, let alone a DeLorean.
