The plastic handle for the trunk release broke on my car and I was hoping to find another that will screw on. I could only find a whole new mechanism on delorean.com for $60 bucks. All I need is the little plastic handle. Any suggestions?

I looked for years with no luck, finally took the one off my wife's D.

My plan however was to get a generic black hood release handle from the "Help" aisle at pep boys - they are designed for a larger threaded insert. I was then going to liberally coat the threads on the rod and a bit of the shaft with anti sieze - put a ball of JB Weld around it, and then slip on the black handle. After it all set up I figured there was a 50/50 chance the handle would take the stress, and another 50/50 it would come off.

I'll try it on my wife's car eventually.

Yes, a cross-reference to a high-production car would be nice for your needs.

Until you find that here are alternatives:
1. List your part number and need on the Parts Wanted list on dmctalk. Link = http://dmctalk.org/forumdisplay.php?11-DeLorean-Parts
2. Search for any donor cars out of D. wrecks or parting-out projects you hear about.
3. Go find the remnants of your busted handle, then go after it with the adhesive and reinforcement of your choice - that is, put it back together. At least you will have something halfway decent until the handle shows up at low cost or you can justify the $60 hurdle for NOS.
4. Go without. Just pull on the handle-less release lever in the meantime.

PS, you might try taking a peek at an old Lotus Esprit's release handle if you run across one sometime....not that 1980's Lotus parts are plentiful these days.

could you fabricate a temporary handle until you find a suitable replacement? you mention that it screws on (sorry, i dont have a D to check :dead:)... could you find a flat bar and a couple bolts to attach to the threads?

i could be totally off base here, just throwing out an idea. :dunno:
