Instead of mucking up my resto thread with my random comments regarding experiences with my car, I'm starting a "post-resto" thread (credit: Jonathan.)


When I first got the car, I still had 10372 (sold, waiting to be picked up.)

The initial plan was to drive while restoring, but it developed a horrible rapping noise under the valve cover (saga begins early in my resto thread: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?11936-VIN-4728-Running-Resto&p=173562&highlight=rapping#post173562.) I sidelined the idea of driving it while diagnosing the noise and began working on other areas of the car. "While I'm in there" turned into dismantling the car to being a half frame-off. So, the 2-month plan turned into 2 years, but now I'm back on the road....this time with 5 gears instead of 3 (totally worth it, BTW.)

Last year I set a goal of being ready for driving season 2017, and very glad to say I accomplished it.....been driving for a few weeks now.



So....


Today I went for a drive to diagnose an odd stumbling at 2500 RPM.. I've been able to drive, but had to flutter-pump the pedal at 2500-32800 RPM....appears it was a vacuum line (I think.) Everything is 90% better now.

I stopped for gas and encountered a first: a female paparazzi. She was about my age and remembered when the car first came out. She asked for a few minutes of my time to have a closer look at the car. She was very nice and genuinely interested. I also had a dude ask for a closer look, his wife stayed at a distance from the car like my wife does (lol.)

Saw a few young guys looking shell-shocked....I think it's great that even the younger crowd really digs it.

Got the usual questions:

What type of engine, how many were made, what year is it....etc. And as usual, no cocaine jokes....total ripoff, I like the cocaine jokes.

Earlier this week I took my family for a drive to Martha's [famous] Ice cream place.....yep, family....as in; family of four -lol!

My 9 & 11 year old kids talked my wife into it. So picture this: my wife (who's not a DeLorean fan,) is squished into the front seat with my eldest while my youngest is in the back. She's paranoid about me getting pulled over, while I'm driving through busy Lake George (so I can drive slowly) and she's trying to ignore the DeLorazzi....lol. She said she's never gonna do that again...!

When we got home, I took her across town with just the two of us....she liked that much more, I think she's coming around. :thumbup:


While at the ice cream place, I had a few young guys come running up for pics. A nice family with two young boys pulled in; the boys where running laps around the car so I came over & opened the doors so they could sit in it for pics. My wife stays as far away as possible, but my youngest loves the excitement.

Took my wife for a nice ride tonight, stopped for gas and ice cream....talked to about a dozen guys. I think my wife is getting used to the routine...haha!

While getting gas an older guy came over, very excited. He hadn't seen one since the early 80's and he's a big fan. First thing he mentioned was that JZD was totally framed. He said he recalled [back then] when he drove one it didn't have much HP, but he loved the car and was thrilled to see one again.

Most every guy approached and asked if I minded a closer look. Most asked about the type of engine, year, and weight. No cocaine jokes...totally gypped again.

When the clutch pedal is pressed, the fluid in the reservoir rises...I'm reading that's a symptom of a bad master clutch cylinder.

Yup, the cup seal has failed. As you push the piston forward in the cylinder, the fluid displacement moves to the area of least resistance. I this case it's backwards up the reservoir hose.

The general rule is, if you need to replace one clutch hydraulic component, you do both. The rubber components have a finite life span.

I went out with my wife & another couple last night (driving a '77 pickup) and finally got some cocaine jokes!

On the approach to the restaurant, small group outside on the deck:

Guy: "Hey...does your DeLorean have the original tires?!"
[Cynical] Me: "Ya -35 friggin' year old car and I have the original tires....watch, I'll light 'em up when I leave." (Group laughs.)
Lady in group: "Is it OK that I go check it out? I really want to see it close up."
Me: "Sure...just don't sit on it. :-) "
Lady: "I won't....thanks!" :-)


Returning to the deck with our drinks:

Guy[s]: "You know why we asked about the tires, right? Did you know about the DeLorean & cocaine?"
[Cynical] Me: "Naaaw.....I own a DeLorean but don't know a thing about it."
Everyone: LOL
Guy[s]: Well, the guy that made the cars hid cocaine in the tires before they shipped from the factory.....that's why we were messin' with ya about original tires."
Me: "Nope....that's bullshit. The cocaine was hidden in the door panels, and it was only in one car.......that one (I point at my car.)"
Everyone: LOL.
Me: "That's how I was able to afford the car."
Guy:"lol....buy the car one day, pay the loan off the next....lol."
Me: "Yup....lol"

Guy: "I do like your car, it's really cool....no offense, but I'm actually more into the truck...very nice!"
Me: "The truck is nice, and the owner is nice......the DeLorean? -owner is a total asshole."

Everyone in hearing distance laughs.

Then we all chilled together having drinks while waiting for our table, they were nice guys. Once inside, I said to my group: "I finally got some cocaine jokes!" In that conversation I learned that my friend knew nothing of the DeLorean/cocaine thing.....he thought the comments were due to the car being from the 80's so by default it's related to cocaine...LMAO!

...It was a great night.

I love the way you handled that. Some folks insist on educating the world in those situations, which most of the time is a lost cause. Sometimes it ends up making the owner sound defensive or stand-offish. For me, I say pick and choose your battles; most of the time just go along with it and have fun. Unless the person is actually asking for a DeLorean history lesson, there's no reason to give them one. Glad you had such a great time! Hopefully your future excursions are equally as entertaining! :thumbup:

Still working 12-16 hour days and haven't driven my car much [if at all] since the A&W visit.

Today was the first day of school for my kids and my daughter's friend wanted me to drive her to school 'cause it's her birthday. Sooooo.... at 10PM last night I was cleaning my car, checking tire pressures....etc. Unfortunately it was raining this AM and I really didn't want to drive my sparkly-clean undercarriage on the wet road, but I even less wanted to disappoint the birthday girl. I wish I got pics, my daughter and the birthday girl were thrilled and everything went well.

Dropping kids off to school in a DeLorean is pretty awesome, the kids love it. This AM the administrators were out front welcoming the kids on the first day back; a suit & tie dude had a classic "WTF" look on his face, and most everyone else was gawking.



In other driving news:

I'm planning to meet Jimmy in upstate NY at a car show on the 16th. I don't do car shows, but this looks like a nice town and as good a reason as any to meet up with Jimmy & see the awesome 2706 project. It'll be my longest drive since putting 4728 on the road this year. I'm guaranteed not to break down since it's only 175 miles, I have AAA Premier (or whatever you call it,) and I know the AAA towing guy.

It would be great to see Nick, Dustybarn, and Jonathan there.

This past weekend was my first trip with 4728; I drove ~180 miles to Clayton NY, met w/Jimmy & saw his awesome restoration of 2706, then drove home the next day.

The car performed well, I had only one mechanical issue (accelerator pump linkage came off...easy fix.) It ran nice & cool...stayed below the 160 degree mark the entire trip. I still have the Hervey exhaust, which is way too loud. I'm planning to run it for the rest of the season, then change it out this Winter.

My Lambda light came on as I left Jimmy's driveway; this somewhat confirms for me that the odometer was close to the actual miles of the car. I got the car with ~29.7K miles; the condition of the car appeared [to me] to reflect that number, so the additional miles I added since ownership would put it right at 30K.

I met Jimmy at the 1000 Islands Street meet, but left my car at his house. I've been online friends with him for a few years, it was cool to meet in person. His restoration is going great, he bought the car in December and has done about 4 years worth of work in 9 months. He installed a Spec 1 engine...feels like twice the HP as my car. The car show was pretty cool, and his was the only DeLorean there.

The 1000 Islands area is very nice, and the weather was great.....the trip was a complete success and really firmed up my satisfaction with the restoration of 4728. There's something about a long trip that helps bond an owner to a car, I think.

1978 Leyland clubman estate I fully restored mechanically for my wife. Rare model. Imported from Britain. Only a little more than a 1000 made. Only 2 years I believe. The original designer of the mini hated it and cancelled design. I built that motor on my welding table. It's a 998. The original 1098 is in the garage. It's certified car by the British registry . We named it alf. After the 80s Alf. Two Alf dolls in back seat. My wife drives the shit out of it in summer .

4728 is put away for the Winter.

It was a good season, as things went much more according to plan than the first two years. I put almost 800 miles on, and crossed-off a lot of "to-do's."

My last drive was a meetup w/Jimmy (2706) in Tupper Lake NY. It was a great day; weather was perfect and the beer & food was great. We also had the random encounter of meeting Bill Collins' son Ted w/his wife Jess.

Today I drove my car for the first time since Oct 2017. It was stands waiting for me to install my new Deloreango exhaust, plus I got over my head renovating my kitchen/livingroom/hallway. Or, maybe I was just in mourning 'cause Jimmy moved away and I couldn't bear to even look at my

1/2 mile from my house I saw a cloud of smoke in my rearview, so I went back home. It appeared to have been coolant overflow onto my exhaust, so I went back out, taking my youngest to the grocery store.

We had an average amount of spectators, and while stopped for gas a woman came over and asked to take a pic to show her boys.

I added a can of seafoam when I filled the tank....1/2 mile down the road I had trouble when restarting from a stoplight: no power. I was thinking: "WTH, did that Seafoam do something? Did a carb linkage come off?" I limped over to the side of the road, checked the carb linkage, revved the engine, checked the gauges...all seemed well. I put it in 1st gear & drove off just fine....then it hit me: I was in 3rd gear from a dead stop instead of 1st. LMAO! It's been too long since I drove my car.

When I got home, I could hear a weird exhaust noise like a leak or something. I found there was nothing in that threaded hole on the driver's side header....I forgot to tighten the sensor I put in there! I backtracked a little and found it in the road.

Overall it was a good shakedown drive, and I tested an FM transmitter/bluetooth thing that Nightflyer Josh turned me on to. It's awesome, now I won't need to install a new head unit & amp this year. I love it.

The DeLoreango exhaust sounds really good, I can hear my music and have a conversation with the passenger. My wife likes the sound of it too, so that'll be a plus for sure (one less thing for her to dislike about the car -lol)

I've been driving my car every day since I decided to reassemble the roof panel and leave the rest "as-is."

I'm glad I decided to sideline the projects I piled on when I removed the roof panel. I currently have no headliner, roof seals, outer seals, or louver. I'll get it it all done in the next few weeks, but prioritizing drive time for now. The nights here have been in the 50's...reminds me of how short the driving season is where I live.


Last night I sealed a vacuum leak, tonight I tuned the carb and drove 33 miles. The car really moves, it has the most HP I've experienced between this one & my previous stock auto.

I’ve been to many of them. I always have a good time. You’ll get a few haters who just have to go out of their way to walk over to you and say something bad about your car but fortunately they’re the minority. Even though there are other owners in my area my car is usually the only DeLorean that shows up and it never fails to draw a crowd. Most of these events are catered and have food/coffee available, or they are located in an area where food is nearby.

I’ll also add that you don’t need a “perfect” car in order to go to a Cars and Coffee. Apart from the dozens of common cars that show up (Mustangs, Chargers, etc) you’re likely to see at least a few works in progress. Several times I’ve seen cars towed in for the show.

I went, but got there a bit late. It was pretty good, I saw some cool cars and everyone was nice. There were cars doing burnouts but I missed most of that. I took some pics I'll post soon.

I made a day of it, and stopped at a nearby music store where [I recently learned] a DeLorean owner works. He wasn't working today, but I gave my contact info to his coworker.

15min after I got home & covered my car, it started pouring rain. I currently have no roof seals, no outer seals, and haven't finished sealing the infill panels so that was pretty good timing!

I've been driving all week, taking advantage of the nice weather as I drive around without my doors completely sealed -lol.

Today I got pulled over for an expired NYS inspection (which I was aware of.) While I'm pulled over with my door open, a dude in the oncoming lane comes to a complete stop and compliments me on the car....acts like the cop isn't even standing there -lol. A few minutes later another cop car stops for the usual "check" and comments on the car as well. No ticket, all's well..

Most comments in the past few weeks are sincere questions and legit inquiries...I hardly ever get cocaine jokes (which I don't mind at all.) This afternoon in a parking lot, a late 50-ish guy with his wife were admiring the car and [not in a mean-spirited way] he said something about: "not having enough cocaine for the cars," so I said: "this one came with enough!"

I also saw a newer Lotus passing me on the highway, the dude driving appeared thrilled to see a DeLorean.

We have a very stormy forecast for a few days, so I have my car in my garage and will complete the projects involving seals & sealing.

Car has been parked for the past 3 weeks, and a big winter storm is about to hit my area today/tomorrow, so that's a wrap until Spring.

Having two DeLoreans isn't as much fun as it sounds, I've had "analysis paralysis" deciding on what to work on. 4519 is still on stands, waiting for me to stop procrastinating.

Tonight I took one of my wife's friends on a drive for her birthday; she's an 80's girl, and likes DeLoreans. We drove ~50 miles of scenic roads in the Adirondacks, playing 80's Metal, Hairbands...etc. Her family surprised her with the plan for me to pick her up; they were outside with her when I pulled up, blasting Poison. 'Errbody's happy!

Last night I took a friend for a "end of the season/selling the car soon" ride. We drove about 30 miles.

We stopped in a tourist town and had the doors open; some people came by & mentioned the car looked like a BTTF car. My friend responded: "ya, we just came from the future." -I kinda like having a co-pilot to field the comments!

Yesterday I made the final drive with 4728 to a dropoff point in my hometown. It was a great day for a drive and I had my daughter with me. Although feeling the usual seller's remorse, a friend from my local club stopped by with his DeLorean & kept me company while I waited for my wife to pick up my daughter & I. (That's much more assuring than you might expect.)

I had the sales experience I hoped for when selling 4728: I met with the new owner in person to inspect the car & test drive, discuss the work completed & needed, and answer all questions. I pointed out the good, as well as the bad.

When I bought 4728 from Casey in Mississippi, Steve checked it for me. It was dark, and the car wasn't properly prepared for a test drive (Steve had to get it running, needed air in a tire...etc.) Casey was good about sending pics & videos, but when I received the car I found undisclosed damage, [minor]parts missing, and felt the condition was somewhat misrepresented. But, it ran and has a nice solid southern frame, so I was satisfied....but the buying experience wasn't overly positive.

When I decided to sell 4728, I planned to give the next owner a proper DeLorean buying experience. I was also inspired by Jesse's experience he posted about, when he bought his car from Tom.

-I drove 60 miles to meet the buyer in a parking lot (in my hometown) ~10AM Sunday 10/18, planning 2 hours for questions & walkaround.
-We went to a nearby Dunkin' Donuts for coffee & more discussion, and interacted with some civilians.
-Noon appointment to put the car on a lift. We discussed the AC work, axle seal, stainless work needed.....etc.
-20 mile road trip to meet with 2 other DeLoreans for coffee at 1PM. One of the DeLoreans is a car the new owner is familiar with from the late 80's.
-20 mile return trip back, more discussion and to negotiate a price.


We agreed on a fair price and he wired the funds. He lives a few hours drive away in a nearby state, but the car will be in my hometown where my parents live, so I offered to deliver it for him.


The timing of the sale also went as planned; I hoped to get a full season of driving, then sell at the end of the season. I drove 53 times this year, totaling 4,517 miles. I'm a little sad to see it go, but I gained another DeLorean friend & club member, and hope to see the car semi-regularly at club meets when I'm driving 4519.


I logged a lot of miles & good times with 4728, and I believe I'll see many more with her and the new owner....

Always good when a selling experience goes as you hope it will (for the buyers too)...

Of course, one just hopes the new owner doesnt do something like putting spinners on the car and painting it florescent green (yup had to put that thought in your head...you're welcome)

I'm pretty happy with where the car went; the new owner is well-informed, and a legit enthusiast. It's his first DeLorean, but he's been researching a long time and is highly familiar with the car. When we met with the other owners, we were coincidentally lined up by build month. He was the first one to notice the hood & antenna styles displayed chronologically.
