I think I saw too them being referred to as "hipsters". Frig I hate people when they make a point of trying to act cool to be seen as being cool.

I dislike "that" guy on every forum that thinks he as discovered something and uses every post to make a statement about his opinion, related to the original post or not. He lives to argue, will keep an argument going ad infinitum merely for the sake of argument. If he realizes he's "that" guy, he doesn't care and may even revel in his status, as disturbing as that is. You don't want to work for this person, live with this person or discuss politics with this person but BOY is he entertaining!

Also, it bugs me when people try to take artistic photos of their car at an angle but then have the front wheels turned the wrong way.
This photo got it right. Notice how the angle of the wheel shows off the front rims and enhances the photo.

This photo (made into a banner) got it wrong. Who wants to see a weirdly angled front wheel showing off the tire tread? It looks dumb and ruins the photo. They should have just left the wheels straight if they weren't going to do it right.

Well, I was just confused. All wheels have rims, because the rim is the edge of the wheel. I was wondering if there was a trend that involved swapping rims of wheels instead of the entire wheel. I know there are two-and three-piece wheels out there.

+1 on the VIN Number, ATM Machine. I'll add my personal favorite: MSDS sheet.
When people call themselves engineers and they don't have the education/degree and the license. It's a licensed profession, same as doctors, lawyers, and pharmacists. You wouldn't refer to yourself as a pharmacist without the license, so don't call yourself an engineer if all you took was a 2 year technologist course.
When Americans refer to places in Canada as "he's from Toronto, Canada" or "he's from Langley, Canada" but don't say what province. It's just plain dumb. I wouldn't say you're from Houston, United States would I? No, it's Houston, Texas. So get it right. Toronto, Ontario. Langley, British Columbia. We all took grade 9 geography. We all recognize the states and provinces.

+1 on "heigth" - drives me crazy. Where do they get it from.
(I'm actually OK with VIN number. I do it all the time)
People who add a letter "n" in the middle of my name. Never any other letter just an N
People who don't write English as good as what I do
People who think it is absolutely necessary to add "Texas" after "Houston". If you tell me you are from Houston then I automatically assume you are from TX. Its just duplication of information. If it is one of the other Houstons, then feel free to say "Houston Ohio" or whatever. Same applies for Toronto - no province or country required. I know where you live.
But at the moment the one thing that really gets me going is while watching the Full color, 3D Viper Radar weather coverage on the TV that can pinpoint to the minute when a tornado will touch down in my street, the coverage is interrupted by a huge black and white announcement from the NWS to say there is a Tornado Warning in my area for the next 2 hours. How very helpful.
And the other thing. Why oh why are we getting full on election coverage in August 2010 for an election that will be held 15 months from now. I don't want to hear a nightly report on how a bunch of also-rans made inane soundbites in Bumf&@$ Idaho. Maybe all that time campaigning. Was necessary back in the stagecoach days but I hear they have invented the television and Internet now. With a bit of effort the whole thing could be condensed down into 3 months saving a fortune in campaign raising and allowing incumbent candidates to actually do some productive work for 12 months.

Add to this "fell between the cracks." I cannot understand how anyone could say this without grasping its meaning, but I hear it all the time.
An English teacher of mine (Martin: that's a teacher of English, not a teacher from England ;)) used to try to get all of her students to stop saying "got to," as in "We've got to get out of here." She'd say "You don't GOT anything. You MUST, or you HAVE to." She also tried to get folks to number things "first," "second," "third," and so on, instead of "firstly," "secondly," etc. -- to no avail, when we started reading Twain and he numbered items "firstly" and "secondly." She also told us that whoever wrote the opening of "Star Trek" wasn't very good at English, because it would have been written "to go boldly where none have gone before."
Weirdest misuse of a phrase I have heard so far: "fast friends." The man who said it was from Georgia and was evidently speaking not of someone he was close to (oops, I mean "to whom he was close"), but meant to say that their friendship had developed rapidly.
And then there was the girl who told me that she was going to wear her "clob hobblers" because it was muddy outside. After a confused explanation of said footwear, I divined that she was referring to "clod-hoppers," which is slang for a heavy shoe or boot.
A pet peeve of mine is a sentence which starts with a prepositional phrase. I see it all the time: "A native of California, Mr. Hobbes has played piano since he was five." This just sounds awful to my ears. "Mr. Hobbes is a native of California and has played piano since he was five" is better. I have seen this structure result in some very confused writing, including "A transplant from New York, the cuisine Chef Shane prepares is a blend of Sicilian and Neapolitan traditions." What?! Are you telling me that the entire cuisine was transported from New York?! It certainly sounds like it.
It also seems that the final comma before the end of a list is no longer required -- e.g. "eggs, bacon, and sausage" has become "eggs, bacon and sausage." I've given up correcting people on this since it is now considered standard journalistic style.
The most egregious placement of unnecessary "likes" into a sentence goes to a Tulane University student I overheard last holiday season. Excitedly, she told her friend: "Like, they like, had like, all these, like, lights, like, like, EVERYwhere!"
Last edit: Overuse of the misunderstood word "literally." Young Americans will now tell you that they were waiting literally a thousand years for the bus. Methuselah was, evidently, a more prolific father than we thought.
Farrar
To piggy back this a bit:
The use of the word "Like" with everything!
There was like...
And like I was...
Then like.... Yeah, I'd like to gag them with a #$%@! spoon, dooode!
And the new ones- "REALLY?" and "SERIOUSLY?" with a new twist.
Prime example - A girl looks through her purse and after not being able to find something says, "REALLY?" Then, having everyones attention and holding a handful of the junk half up says, "SERIOUSLY?"

Example: I have a friend that's a full blown honkey. She starts dating a spanish guy, and all of a sudden she's latina. Attempts to use spanish phrases, with a white girl accent, tries to speak spanish and pretty much sounds like she's telling your dog to go to the library.
Pretty fly for a white girl. (always wanted to say that). But I should have said the following: "That is rather contemporary for a Caucasian young lady."

Yeah this post is probably gonna be deleted...
People who bitch about moderation and then will bitch about folks posting tangent stuff in their threads. The DML is right over there --> if you dont want moderation...oh wait.

What really grinds my gears today is my Delorean. I needed to change out my jump wire, so I unhooked the bottom end from the starter solenoid and the terminal just spins. So after removing the starter I know now that I need a new solenoid, since the contacts are burnt inside and the one terminal melted. Same day(today) my steering bushing crumbled, and my reverse light switch failed. I guess bad things really do come in three.:mad2:

Did you ever notice how everyone on TV is now "awesome", every task or accomplishment is "incredible", every model is "super" and everything else is just plain "amazing"? Whatever happened to honesty rather than pandering to the politically correct? "Little Johnny isn't amazing, he's solidly average Mrs. Jones". BAM! Libel lawsuit and off to court we go because we've permanently damaged that amazing child's self confidence.
It's refreshing when people tell the truth, but they are too often labeled as wet blankets or pessimists. Just look at the list of posts above this one and tell me that you believe the average Joe to be amazing, awesome or incredible!
Give me a leader that points out the problems, nominates a solution and has the managerial qualities to put the right people to work fixing them. You can keep your "rah rah ain't we great" speeches or politicians that want to ride the status quo. The good will survive without intervention; the not-so-good is what can drag us all down. Stop spouting off that everything is [I]a w e s o m e !!

And I could absolutely picture Mr. Rooney having done that speech.

What does grind my gears refers to World of Warcraft. Thing is, I play hunters and yet I've heard stories of why the name "huntard" was born. Being as I played them for four years and have had good experience, I do find that fact both pitiful and appalling. Bad players can make us look bad.

Pointing out that a modern diesel will outperform and out-economy, be better quality and cheaper usually does the trick.

I have a few regarding the road.
1.) People that like to speed up when I try to pass them.
2.) When behind someone while trying to turn right on a red, they decide at the very last second to turn right before the light turns green and they don't use their turn signal. It's quite bothersome to me when I've been waiting a couple minutes for the light to turn green so I can go.
3.) On another occasion with the same scenario, I have been behind drivers that wait to turn right on green. No offense to anyone here that can't turn right on red on some states. I guess it can also tick anyone off when a driver does the opposite.
4.) I so hate it when I get pinned in behind one car and there are one or two others right beside me just riding my blind spots!
5.) Slowpokes that cause me to miss a light.
6.) Drivers talking or texting on their cell phones when not paying attention. Need I say more?
7.) Drivers that leave their turn signal on longer than intended. There have been a few times when I wait to turn right to get out on the main road, then there's somebody with their right turn signal on, which makes me think they were going to turn right sometime before me. Not true in those cases and I had a close call from slight poor judgment.
8.) Anything inconsiderate and/or dangerous regarding loud boomboxes, very bright headlights (thank goodness for adjusting our mirrors), black tinted headlights or taillights, or heck, solid coverings over both taillights. Again, no offense to anyone here.
I am not a real speeder (cheating five miles above the speed limit can't be that bad) but I do like to zip around slowpokes with my sedan of a shark.

He's fantastic. Discovered him back when I was in London during new years 2010 on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year. He's hilarious (and I'm now addicted to that show, watched it in 2011, looking forward to 2012's!)

+1
But, "clear" has only one syllable on this side of the pond (Clear: [klɪər] ). LOL
"Nuclear"...a 3 syllable word: [ˈnü-klē-ər, ˈnyü-, ÷-kyə-lər]
And, "Nuke"...go figure!:)

David Mitchell always cracks me up!
I checked out some of the vids accompanying the one Sean posted...I wonder how many people called/wrote in about him saying "bad spellers" instead of "poor spellers". LOL

Dammit Ron! I hate it when that happens!
Nevertheless, I shall be ignoring mere fact and shall continue to pronounce it nut-Ella, much in the manner of those before me who started mispronouncing tomato, basil, oregano and all those other foodstuffs that are bi-lingual. :deviltail:
