I am new to the forums. I just bought a DeLorean it's a 1981 5spd grey interior with 3,600 miles on the clock. I think the vin is 7599.

Anyway, Ive read so many forums and people have so many different ideas that it's confusing. I heard there's a trigger ring that can be placed on the crank pulley. Does anyone have any info on this?

Also I heard you had to switch the 2.8 cams into the 3.0 heads to add a distributor. I would like to keep the coil pack and not run a distributor.

Motor I have is a late 1991 3.0 out of a Eagle Premier and it is distributor less.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i can get you set up with a trigger ring. I would need you to send me your crank pulley, i would send it back with a trigger ring welded on and bracketry for the sensor as well as a distributor block off plate.

Alternatively i could send the parts to you and you do the welding.

I ran a 3.0 with MS2. 36-1 trigger ring routed through a ford EDIS-6 box. I ran COP in wasted spark. If you wanted to do sequential you would need to step up to a MS3 and run a cam sensor, something I have not pursued yet.

That's sounds great. So this motor is distributor less being a late 91 3.0. It appears to have a cam sensor on the back of the left bank if that helps. I wish there was a way to utilize the existing efi and ignition. I have the original ECM. I could only find one person who tried using the original trigger ring off the flywheel and gave up.

all 3.0s are distributorless... to a point. the older models had a distributor but it directly connects to the camshaft and has no provisons for advance. so you would have to run a static 5 or 10 deg of timing all the time! The ECU handled the advance.

There are three cases of swaps where the stock ecu was attempted to be utilised, I assume you are referring to steve's car. It does not work, and steve put in an amazing effort. Much easier just to run megasquirt.
I have covered this before but i do not understand the desire to run the stock ecu. It has limited diagnostics, the wiring is poorly documented, unable to be tuned, and much much more difficult to implement than Megasquirt.

I understand. I guess it just sucks that if it weren't for the crank sensor in the damn auto transmission all you would need to do is supply keyed power and a ground to run it.

Megasquirt it is. I'll be happy getting a PRV running in this Delorean instead of using a LS motor.

So could you PM me what it will cost to get the trigger ring and bracket from you? I'll send you the pulley

Greatly appreciate your help

Sent you a PM

Joe did a nice writeup on his site when he bought my old setup. Check it out

Wow very impressive. You really went all out on this project. So if I wanted to just do the bare minimum to get her running, is it possible to leave the motor the way it is and utilize the stock injectors and intake? In other words to just add the megasquirt and the modified pulley and sensor?

Copied from the PM, figured this would be useful information to anyone searching in the future

As for items to gather for the swap, please review Joe's website, it is extremely comprehensive.

Matt has also put together a guide for swapping a 3.0 I used when I did mine (as you can see by my confused posts haha)
http://www.dmctoday.com/showthread.php?180-How-to-Install-a-3-0L-PRV-into-your-DeLorean

- You will need to build a wiring harness, you generally buy this with the Megasquirt.
- You will need to add additional circuits, once again you can buy a relay box with your Megasquirt or do your own wiring like I did.
- The stock delorean exhaust bolts up to the 3.0, as well as any aftermarket delorean exhaust.
- Stock coolant hoses and piping work with the 3.0, but you will need a 3.0 specific waterpump.
- You will need to run the 3.0 a/c compressor but the ac lines bolt right up.
- You have to do some grinding to make the alternator fit, but very minor. Details are in both of the links I included above.
- Motor mounts, clutch, flywheel, etc all bolt up the same, Delorean parts.
- You will need to partially disassemble the motor to swap over the lower crank case from the Delorean motor to the 3.0 as the mounting ears are in a different position.

As far as electronics I will list off the sensors and any pertainant information:
-02 sensor: You will need to run a wideband o2 that is wired directly to the megasquirt. this is critical for tuning.
-Crank position: My kit I will provide
-Injectors: stock 3.0
-Coil and wires: Stock 3.0
-Coolant Temp Sensor: Saturn SL1 sensor, screws right into the thermostat housing
-Intake air temp sensor: Any gm IAT, plumb it into the intake
-Throttle body: Stock 3.0
-Throttle position sensor: Stock 3.0
-Idle air control valve: Jeep 4.0 valve, DIYautotune has mounting blocks for these where you would buy your megasquirt
-Oil Sender: For dash guage, I never got this to work but Joe has instructions on how to make the stock 3.0 sender work on his site
-Coolant Sender: For dash guage, Stock delorean

Please read over the two linked webpages, they will answer most of your questions. They are excellent resources I never had when I did my swap, it is very nice of these people to take the dime and document things for others to use.
