So This is the story of me picking up my car from Mike and the Team at Midwest and driving it home to upstate NY over 900 Miles for its first ever drive. Let me start out by saying that the only reason the car was there was due to me being ripped off and having to fix a bunch of shotty work that another franchise did to my car. An honest assessment and review for that will come later. I will say that in the Future the only DMC franchise that will ever touch my car again will Be Mike and His team at Midwest. Him and Jason and the rest of the gang there are phenomenal and did a great job on my car.
The trip started out with me and a buddy driving to Syracuse and catching a red eye flight to Chicago. Mike was nice enough to drive out to the airport and take us to his shop to show me my car. When we got there the car was still having a hot start issue that was making them scratch their heads. Suzy was nice enough to give me and my buddy a ride to the holiday inn around the corner( great hotel, My hotel of choice when going to Midwest). We went and checked out a local car museum (Volo Auto Museum ). What an amazing museum, I highly recommend it. Mike and Jason figured out that my vacuum triple switch under the intake was bad and also a sensor. Suzy picked us back up and took us to the car, and Mike gave me a ride in my car for the first time ever other then me driving it in my driveway and down the block. It was cool to be in my car with it running right and realizing a dream. Mike and Jason drove the crap out of my car the week leading up to my arrival and got all the bugs worked out of it. Was pretty cool to see the dedication to the customer.
I ended up taking the rubber chicken out of my car that i had in there to make people laugh on the road and stuffed it in Jasons tool box as I was pretty sure he needed a good laugh after all the time he had spent on my car. They did a lot of stuff, mostly fixing bad work from the other franchise. But while it was there I had them do headliners, a windshield, new a pillars, alignment, wheel balance, restore the windshield wiper are, new cowl etc. they painted the trim around windshield, reset my t panel, adjusted doors, and a lot of other little things. Most work was done under the engine compartment getting things right. Mike was concerned about me taking the car on a long road trip and I said Mike best case we make it, worst case we don't, either way its going to be exciting and I am stoke either way. In all honesty people thought we were crazy....after doing the road trip I will say, That if you are mechanically inclined and are ok and fully expect to have to deal with some minor or major break down issues then do it. If you aren't then don't.
The trip started the next morning early on Saturday, we decided to stop at the sand dunes in Indiana and check those out because an uber driver told us about them. it was pretty cool and worth the stop. We made it about 200 miles or so out of Chicago when the car died at 90 unexpectedly. We coasted over to the side of the road and discovered the car had pissed a bunch of fuel out of the accumulator area. A local guy stopped and had a jack and was nice enough to let me use it to inspect and I was able to confirm the problem a pressure line to the accumulator. He recommended a tow truck guy and we waited about 40 minutes for them to show up. These guys where awesome, their shop was closed and I explained the situation to them and said look if you let me put it on a lift I will know in 2 minutes if we can fix it, and if we can it will take 15 minutes. Luckily they decided to help us and I discovered that some moron at the first franchise took the new accumulator fuel line off that came with my kit from DMC and for some reason installed some 50 psi low pressure line. Luckily of the 3 parts stores in town one had some 225 psi line and the mechanics girl friend was nice enough to go pick it up for us. She brought it back while we ate some taco bell and after about a 3 hour delay from incident we where back on the road. Those guys helped restore some faith in people. I will say that they where intimidated by car and if it wasnt for me knowing it so well and talking to them they wouldn't have touched it. (something to think about if you are going to attempt a long trip ).
After that we where back on the road and about 600 miles in the speedo quit working, i believe it to be the dust cap on the left front, no big deal. Stopped for gas before hitting buffalo and noticed an axle seal seeping, not enough to be a problem but was making a little bit off a mess. I believe the vent on the trans was gummed up. We finally made it to buffalo and spent the night. The next day I stopped into a shop and they let me throw the car on a lift to check trans level and it was full (just had to make sure)...they didn't even charge me ! it was awesome and was only a 30 minute delay. Stopped at my moms work and showed the car of to her co workers , then was on the way to Syracuse to pick up the other car. Even ran into my brother and his friends on the highway. picked up the car and made the final 2 hour journey home. Celebrated by grabbing dinner and then went and pick up my dog. The Car had made it 900 miles !
The trip experience was nothing short of awesome. Seeing peoples reactions and also realizing I was driving my childhood dream car across country after restoring it for almost a year and spending thousands of man hours working on it and a lot of money was priceless. I will say that every single stretch of highway and gas station stop was an experience. I think the trip was hours longer just from gas stations. People absolutely loose it. Sometimes I would let one person sit in the car and then end up with a line of people wanting their picture next to it. The cars celebrity is just unreal. But seeing the joy of people and kids when you let them sit in the car is absolutely awesome and is a big part of what makes owning this car so great.
Some experiences and notes:
-I need a cup holder lol
-I need a place to mount my phone
-no AC sucks
-letting people sit in car is risky a big dude ripped my left rear elbow pad thing now ill have to fix it.
-Radio was cool but having a bose speaker on dash was nice.
-cigarette lighter works but my phone charger didn't...weird ill have to look at it.
-real easy to run out of storage space, especially when you have a strut bar but haven't cut carpet to fit.
-I hit a damn teridactal bug and didn't have any windshield washer at night and was damn near blind lol.
-regular headlights aren't bright enough and brights piss people off. ( I will need to upgrade).
-first thing i did after leaking all that gas was buy a fire extinguisher at a truck stop. dont leave home without one lol
-add at least a few hours to a normal trip time because you just cant get gas. unless you flip a switch and be rude...which i have to admit towards the end the what year are you going to and where is the flux comments got old...I was tired lol

Finally if you have a Delorean, take it on a road trip...it will be one of the coolest experiences of your life !

I would like to say thanks to Mike and his Team, and really all the vendors who have given me a single part for my car, RichNYS and all the people on this forum etc who have helped me along the way to getting this car on the road.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Congratulations! There really is nothing else like road tripping in a DeLorean (and 99% of the time, in a good way, lol...)

Hopefully the few unplanned stops you had were the last of its issues and your future adventures are smooth sailing!

I bought my car in FL and drive it almost 1,000 miles home without really even looking at it. (Itbwas a low mileage refurb so other than fluids and a once kver I really did t know what to check, it all looked new)
I got lucky as the only thing that happened was an angle drive went bad about 700 miles into the trip. I really wish I had enjoyed the trip more and stopped to take in the sights but I was so anxious being I just met 5609 I had no idea what to expect. I just wanted to get home.

I would also have liked to save the pictures and the thread from my journey over 9 years ago but they were lost in the dmctalk.com crash. Apparently they should be restored anytine now. I lost a lot of pictures entrusted to talk, never again.

Those sand dunes do look like a cool thing to check out. Is that on the bottom end of Lake Michigan, near Gary, Indiana?

You got any idea what the origins of your speedo are? It looks a bit different than the usual ones, no metric and bigger markings. Never seen one like that before.

Not sure if this was intentional, but your door lights have the red coloured lense in the middle and the orange one on the rear. They were meant to be orange at the front and middle and red on the rear. Easy enough to change if you chose to, just pop the lense out and swap with the other. The bulb too if they are LEDs. Regular bulbs won't need to change with the lense.

(...be careful with too much negativity about one franchise or person here. Not that you can't, you can do whatever you like. It just doesn't usually do you any good in the long run.)

Jimmy isn't talking about us Sam. We don't have a shop in Orlando and are not a franchise. We have worked with him through the pains of the upcoming mess created by others.

Not to derail but I welcome and appreciate ALL reviews for vendors good and bad as it helps me make the best decision for my car. I am able to take reviews with a grain of salt and can tell the difference between a bad review and a retaliatory review. The only thing is bad reviews against preferred vendors here get locked and forgotten about which sucks because it shows bias towards those that have favor with talk elites.

The grain of salt thing is probably more what I meant. For the reader that is. If a review gets posted that's got a lot of emotion worked into it, it can be hard to tell what was fact and what was fiction. The two sides to every story idea. I think the vendor reviews are valuable too, but too often key information is left out that might have had you conclude that neither party involved were without fault.

I liken it to the way some threads on here get started seeking help with an issue their car is having and then much later into the troubleshooting they finally mention their car has had a bunch of modifications or changes or portions they knew were not working well but neglected to mention. I guess it just isn't always terribly easy to read between the lines with the rant threads because you rarely ever get the whole story (or both sides to the story).

I'm very sorry you were dissatisfied with the service you received at my location. The project and timeframe was a challenge for my staff at the time considering our recent opening. The technician that worked on you car is no longer with the company; we have since hired two certified technicians with over 30 years combined experience, both have gone through the DMC training process on DeLorean specifics and are working out great.

DMC Texas and I worked with Mike at DMC Midwest to ensure the customer and car were taken care of. Your $2,000 invoice of parts and labor was covered under our DMC warranty for just such an occurrence, as is all work performed at this or any DMC location. I have been told that "Its not the mistake you make its how you handle it" is what counts and is remembered, hopefully that will be the case in time.

Much respect for that mindset. So many will instinctively deny, blame, or accuse someone other than themselves. Everyone makes mistakes but the ones who try and make it right get my vote.

Congrats on getting the car and driving it (on the road)

Yep, cupholders seem to have been a strange oversight..I guess they didnt think you'd want a zesty drink along the way.

Maybe its time to take up smoking, since the lighter works....and giving up cell phones, since your charger didnt.. hehe

Here's a USB charger that worked in my D. It fits the type B lighter socket and when in position, looks very much like the OEM lighter:

+1

Almost anybody can charge a card and make a sale with a smile. A loyal customer / advocate is made or not made when the vendor chooses how to handle things that don't go as planned. In my experiences, DMC attempts to make it right. That's why I continue to buy there (and from Rob Grady).

Jimmy, very sorry that happened, but it looks like you got a favorable outcome in the end. Congrats on being able to road trip in your car!

It is a challenge for the DMC franchises (or any shop for that matter) to service a car hundreds of miles away. Once you get out of their local area how can they fix it? That is why it is so important for them to do it right the first time. Driving the car and "shaking it down" to work out any bugs or mistakes is so important. Even if you had the car shipped, these problems would have likely occurred, just near your home. DMC FL's explanation about a recent opening and a bad tech doesn't wash either, doesn't anyone check anything there? Bottom line, there are no excuses for shoddy work ever. That said it is inevitable things will go wrong, it IS a 30 year old car and they didn't rebuild the car so even if they got everything right, things they didn't touch will fail. Expect other things to happen but over time it should happen less and less if you keep up with the car. Sounds like you know what you are doing and should be OK but don't be surprised to find more things.

David,

With all due respect, you do not know the details.

We had a short time frame because the customer was moving out of the area.

I would never give a incomplete car to someone and call it done.

We test and shake down all cars before delivery given the time to do so.

This was an unfortunate situation that DMC worked together to make it right.

You're right, we never hear all of the details. I am sure you did what you could to make it right but it is never as good as doing it right the first time. With all due respect, this is not the first instance of a customer not being happy with the work performed by your shop. If the time frame was too short to do a proper job maybe you shouldn't have done it. If the tech you had was not qualified maybe he shouldn't have been working on it or he should have been better supervised. I also understand all too often customers have overly optimistic expectations. Just because you "go over" a car doesn't mean it will perform flawlessly on a long trip right out of the shop. Obviously there was a disconnect between what the customer wanted and what he got. Hindsight being 20/20 I am sure things could have turned out better. As for age, I should have said 30+ year old cars, but Mike just wants to make sure everything is accurate (he never makes mistakes). Even after the car went through DMC Midwest's shop the car still had "issues". At least in this case the customer was able to help himself enough to get home. This points out something, he could have been better prepared. If he had a list of all of the people along the way that he could have called for help things might have gone smoother. Owners helping other owners is not uncommon. My recommendation to all new owners is to plan to trailer the car or have it transported till you have enough confidence that the car can handle a long trip. Getting towed, unplanned, in the middle of nowhere is going to cost you way more than if you had the car transported all the way in the first place. As for this particular customer, it sounds like DMC did the right thing and tried to make it right, the customer sounds happy with the way it turned out.
