According to Hagerty www.hagerty.com , the DeLorean is one of the top 10 chick magnet cars!!! The article contains a photo by Kevin Abato.

Just for the record, the "magnet" does not work in Maryland.

this seems to be the general concensus on the forum...

just playing the devil's advocate though... i seem to recall a story in which your DeLorean helped you in meeting your wife?

I've met my share, must be a LA thing...

Maybe DCS West should have been in LA?

Well, this might work out nicely for me. Just got an assignment to California (Vandenberg AFB, Santa Maria, ~3hrs north of LA). I'll be there next month.
Maybe I'll get a surfboard to put on the luggage rack and cruise around....

If by chick they mean MT3K fans that still live with their parents, then yeah totally.

Obviously, it's the Bizaarro-DeLorean; the one we hear so much about. It has the aluminum body, weighs a ton, is powered by a V8 and now, apparently, is irresistible to women.

If by chick you mean sausage, and if by 24 year old model you mean zit faced pre-teen boy, then ya, mine's a magnet too.

Full agreement w Sean, none of the cars I've owned did I count on for getting women. Bimmer, Mercedes, DMC. All the same. If she's all into big shiny rims she can keep walking.

Nice list from the Hagerty site.
I don't equate "Can I please get a picture of me in your car?" with Chick Magnetism, but there is something about this car...
Here is my favorite such D photo, featuring somebody who might have been "Miss Marin County" at a nice show a few years back. John DeLorean thought of everything - the car even has enough headroom for her tiara.

I'd like to point out I've had three women approach me just today with an interest in the car.

Not to be a bitch....but maybe it's not the car....

By that I mean if you give off a cocky d-bag vibe, I don't care if you're driving a horse and carriage and carrying a dozen roses, you won't be a chick magnet.

I think that the problem is that most DeLorean owners, myself included, give off a meek sci-fi nerd vibe.

Something like this:

I just don't see girls, much less pretty ones, flocking to a guy like that.

I can confirm that I've gotten a pretty decent reception from most of the ladies that have seen me driving around.

Naturally, this makes me even more annoyed that Christine is garaged indefinitely.

You could have a point as personal image or obnoxious behavior can be easy to spot & avoid. I don't know that many D owners are that way though. But I think it's also different by region too.

Here in southern PA, most shows I end up going to are mostly muscle cars. A majority of those shows are attended mostly by the show participants & not many outsiders/general public. At the very few cruises we have here, most girls are with their husbands/boyfriends & while they get a genuine smile when seeing the D, if anyone approaches to look at the car or talk about it, it's the guy & the girl stands in the background. Regardless, I don't get many requests to sit in or get a photo in the car here. I can also get gas & not get approached or stopped many times. I think people in this area are just anti-social.

If I were to bring my car down to northern North Carolina, where I'm currently working, I think I'd get flooded with attention since I doubt there are many around here...& NC people are really friendly & outgoing.

Maybe the chick magnets poles get reversed when the car isn't in California?

I do. A chick magnet can bring a girl over and give you both a conversation starter... What else would you have the car do for you?

Regardless, I think that basing a relationship on a car is a bad idea. Not that it can't work, but I think there are better ways.

Call me a fool, but I'm a sucker for the old romantic ideas. I like the concept of courtship, meaningful conversation, getting to know the other person, and building a lasting bond. Of course, that's never been my biggest barrier. I learned awhile ago that a car show is about the worst place you can go to meet women. most who are there are with their boyfriend and the last six or so women I've gotten along with in person and asked out have declined due to having a boyfriend; car show or not. I know plenty of people who would press on after that, but I respect monogamy too much to contribute to destroying it.

Ranting aside, it's a bad idea to buy ANYTHING solely to impress the opposite gender. Buy it because you love it and if you find the right person, they'll understand. Or, at least, they won't accuse you of doing strange things in the garage when you come in at 3am and coming back into the house smelling of motor oil and exhaust.

Maybe the dinky exhaust note of a Delorean needs to be added to this study:

http://www.wired.com/autopia/2008/09/weve-got-some-b/

They are drawn to the stainless and are turned off by the exhaust. I've said the exhaust note of my D reminds me more of a Volkswagen than anything else.

As for the Polo? Everyone had less testosterone after listening to it. That means the acceleratus interruptus of a Prius going all-electric in traffic is automotive equivalent of skin flicks starring previous secretaries of state, despite General Motors’ claim that nearly nine out of 10 women would rather talk to a guy in a hybrid than a Porsche.

If by "talk to" they mean "mock, question heterosexuality," then yes. Yes I would.

I don't see why we're still going on about this; it's really quite simple and nothing unusual: another article was ran about the DeLorean with incorrect facts.

Reaction #1:

The car is not a chick magnet. And to smash your glasses, no car is ever a chick magnet, unless it is fluffy and pink. Chicks may like the car because they like you, like the attention it brings them, or need a ride. To girls, the car is a means, not a goal.

Reaction #2:

I'm so happy with all the attention the DeLorean brings me. Every time I go out for a drive, I only meet drivers/pedestrians that give me a thumbs up, and girls smiling with recognition! Needless to say I am still single...

You might want to revise the "fluffy and pink" statement there before you suffer a female smack down. I've met a few girls who could turn a wrench better than 99% of guys I've met. Their idea of a car was usually a high horsepower Mustang, Camaro, or Hemi-Cuda. Cuda-girl was drop dead gorgeous but unfortunately very married. Lucky guy, he drove an early 70s Charger...her car was faster.

Perhaps I should have added the 'in general' in there. I didn't, expecting the reader to see through that. In a similar way there are male persons that couldn't care less about cars, still the general idea about men is that they like cars, beer and sports (and some other important stuff I won't go into here).

I've seen plenty of professional female drivers (bus, taxi, truck, crane, etc.) that were much better at it than their male counterparts. I'd love to meet some of those female mechanics you mention.

Only expensive (looking) cars are chick magnets. Actually I need to rephrase that... Expensive (looking) cars are gold-digger magnets.

Unless you are into that sort of thing (read; rich and wanting a trophy wife) those are the kind you really don't want to have in control of your stick-shift... paddle-shift or automatic if you catch my drift.

Besides, I only get comments from guys about my mustang. Which is surprising, as it is an older model, not the 2011 5.0 and not tuned. I never had a chick say "Hot car" ever. And with a DeLorean I doubt any chicks will flock to mine when and if I get it. I am happily married mind you, but the menu is still something I can look at...

I think dick magnet is the correct term. And it would be for both indicating the male gender... and the token dick that doesn't know but thinks he does.
