What is this noise?

The recording was made with my phone held below the car through the open door as I started & shut off the car several times in succession. Early on while recording, I pushed in the clutch to see if there's any change. While driving, I hear a faint *skurt-skurt-skurt." While driving, I also hear a lower volume version of the noise when accelerating.

Thats the sound the hamsters make when they stuck in the wheel the wrong way...

Could be injector noise youre hearing..mine sounded like that when I had them out cleaning and checking them.

Try looking at something external first. Maybe an idler pulley or ac clutch that only drags as the rpm approaches 0.

I suppose it's possible that you may have accidentally mounted a small puppy to your engine instead of a frequency valve? Check that too.

I think the sound is near/in the bell housing.

No compressor or idler pulley on the engine at this time.

When driving, it seems more prevalent at the beginning of acceleration when in too high gear.

Hi Rich, has your pilot bearing been replaced? Also, did you say that the noise happens when the clutch is engaged or disengaged (or both)? ...I'm thinking about the throw out or pilot bearings?

I don't think any work has been done in that area. Working the clutch seems to have no effect. In the recording, I engaged the clutch after the first few starts.

Vacuum leak. You don't hear it until the engine slows down. Long shot but I've seen it.

You probably need to have some load on the engine, lower vacuum. Hard to do at idle with a manual trans. It would be something relatively big, i.e. PCV hoses, throttle body.

How does the car run? Idle normal etc?

The car runs really well....idles fairly normal (a little skip sometimes, but otherwise pretty good.)

I'll try teaming up on it with a few sets of eyes & ears.
