Well my old thread is ruined thanks to Photobucket, so here is the new one. I've had several alternator belts break this year and I got sick of all the damn belt dust everywhere. Unfortunately, it also looks like my crankshaft seal is leaking again despite being replaced at the beginning of the year.

Progress so far

I also noticed wear on the coolant hose. I'll have to find some way to protect this before I can swap the hose.

After a quick search, I'll be getting some permatex silicon tape to wrap around the hoses where melted belt material had been hitting.

FWIW, I'd change out that hose in the last pic over what looks like a nick/gash on the bottom side.

I'll be changing both hoses going to the water pump. I daily drive the car so I need something temporary until I can get the parts and change them out. I also want to fix the problem that cause the nick before changing it out so I dont have to replace it again.

I just put a hose clamp for the belt to rub against.....

I just put a hose clamp for the belt to rub against.....

Wouldn't that damage the belt then?

Stopping point for tonight, my headlamp battery was low. My fingertips are also sore lol

Without the asbestos heat shield, is there a point to keeping that metal piece there?

Stopping point for this weekend. Left the AC belt off cause idler pulleys are misaligned. Still not sure how to check alignment for alternator pulley. If the water pump pulley was flat on the front then i'd get it easy. Still got plenty left to clean on the engine, but the rear is as good as I could reasonably get it.

I forgot I worked at a manufacturing plant. I scored a lot of 100 grit silicon carbide sandpaper from our board sander. Hopefully it does the job for getting the grain and scratches out for the mirror polishing.

The car is finally back together but won't start. I jumped the rpm relay and the pump runs. I hooked up another battery and that's not working.

Got a new battery, Type 78ext from O'Reillys. Now car is turning, with some sputtering but it's not fully cranking up.

It's been sitting a while so I'm jumping the rpm relay to try to build up some fuel pressure.

I've been talking about doing an engine swap since before I even bought the car and that day has finally come. Instead of the v8 monster I initially wanted I'm doing an ev conversion. I bought a nissan leaf motor on Saturday for a really good price. It will be running on the stock inverter for now until I become more familiar with the process, then upgrading the inverter for more power.

I've started draining the tank and removing some components.

Picked up some lexan and started making replacements for the grilles in the engine cover. It's awful to cut with the scribe but I think it'll look neater.

What are you doing to replace the loss of heat ventilation ?

mr_maxime
03-22-2019, 12:53 PM
The electric motor and inverter should be running a lot cooler than the prv and both are liquid cooled as far as I know.

Battery temp will be monitored so I'll have to check for those since they are air cooled. If it's an issue I'll put the grilles back in.

I kept tearing down other parts though

While doing disassembly, I found that the inertia switch jump looked melted. That may have been why my engine wasn't running.

I put the lexan screens in and I love it. It'll look amazing with the electric motor and batteries

I tried taking out the shifter, but I think i may need to pull the body off the frame to get enough clearance

Starting to make progress on dissassembly. I had to leave cause the disconnected gas lines gave off a lot of fumes. Anyone know how to take the air intake out of the pontoon?

I got rid of the last containers of gas today. Absolute nightmare to dispose of legally. I got the fuel tank out. Found it easier to use my jack lever as a pry bar from the top. A partial battery pack will eventually occupy this space.

Got back into the VOD today and it looks like I didn't reinstall something properly. Seeing how there's more coolant near the front of the car, I'm assuming maybe the Y pipe.
https://i.imgur.com/0PeFksT.jpg?1

Aside from that, I got a ton of wiring disconnected. I had a vacuum tube from the interior pulled out, but thatll be going back in. The block has been drained of coolant for the final time.

I just got these rubber pads in today. Bought the last pair for the stands. The one for the lift is definitely looks too thick for when the car is on the ground though. Also visible is the cleaning i started on the frame where the fuel tank was.

Thanks it's going to be a long process of selling old parts to buy new parts with lots of "while I'm there" jobs

Cleaned the garage a little and took the axles off today. Not hard at all. They broke loose easy and it was pretty much just time consuming.

Disconnecting the clutch line was WAY more of a PITA than the axles

Progess looks meh up top. I got the clutch lines removed. Clutch slave, starter and exhaust are now all off. I also picked up a transmission jack and engine hoist from harbor freight. I got PB blaster all over the car. Catalytic converter was also a pain to remove. Hopefully I got enough PB on the fuel filter to break that loose.

Got the transmission "out". Didn't realize it acted as a counterbalance to the engine. I put some jack stands under it for tonight and hopefully taking it out tomorrow. I did it this way because i dont have enough clearance to pull the transmission out with the engine. I didnt get a picture but one of the transmission mounts broke. Looks like there was an existing crack and the transmission jack or breaker bar was enough to break it off. Theres a good chance I'll need to take off the bellhousing so that the transmission can clear the frame.

I took the transmission off the jack and on some shop rags. I had to raise the car up about another 1/4", but I was able to slide it under the frame. I had no issues pulling the engine out. Miraculously had enough clearance with the louvres on and enough behind the car to lower it onto a furniture dolly.

Not much mechanical work this week, but I've picked up an arduino, some temp sensors and relays. Also got a raspberry pi and 7" touchscreen. I ordered the motor controller and learned that theyre just about to release an obd2 converter for it. Using an additional raspberry pi shield I should be able to use that to display a digital dash. Things are starting to fall in place.

Got my arduino coded for cooling fan operation. I didnt get much detail from my online search but one post saying the fans should not come on until coolant temp is 135F. Idea is that this replaces the otterstat switch. This is using VMA320 Temp sensor and VMA406 5V relay. I have no idea if the fans will ever be needed. Im guessing this could work for the PRV as well with the temp set higher. In retrospect, i could probably have just gotten a sensor for the leaf...

#include <math.h>

int relayPin = 8;// define output pin for relay

void setup() {
pinMode(LED_BUILTIN, OUTPUT);
pinMode(relayPin, OUTPUT);// define pin 8 as output
}

void loop() {
double RawADC = analogRead(A0);
double Temp;
Temp = log(10000.0 / (1024.0 / RawADC - 1)); // for pull-up configuration
Temp = 1 / (0.001129148 + (0.000234125 + (0.0000000876741 * Temp * Temp )) * Temp );
Temp = Temp - 273.15; // Convert Kelvin to Celcius
Temp = (Temp * 9.0) / 5.0 + 32.0; //Convert C to F
int Temp1 = Temp;
if (Temp1 >= 135) digitalWrite(relayPin, LOW); // turn the relay on
else digitalWrite(relayPin, HIGH); // turn the relay off
delay(1000);
}

Thanks

I got a rough start on the touchscreen interface after finding a decent graphic based programming tool. I'm using Processing like bttws did on his digital dash. On my windows computer right now, but ill probably start programming it directly on the pi when i get a proper power supply. Sadly I left it at my dad's house this weekend.

Starting to look better. I also ordered the carberry shield so that I'll be able to plug into the OBD2 port and build a digital dash. I need to know the dimensions of the cluster before I can order a screen.
