In the Mods forum there is a modified ignition thread in which several owners seem to prefer stock DeLorean ignition, but because that thread is about modified ignition they are reduced to arguing *FOR* stock ignition by arguing *AGAINST* modified ignition. I thought it might be nice for them to have a thread premised upon stock ignition behind preferable, in which they can argue for the stock setup on its own terms. I put this thread in the General forum because it is not a modification thread.
Just to get things started, I can think of several reasons off the top of my own head to keep stock ignition in place:
- Originality. Not just concours competition -- some owners like to keep their cars in the factory configuration as a general practice
- Vendor support. DeLorean specific vendors specialize in the stock configuration. Deviating from factory design usually means buying from another source.
- Functionality. The stock ignition is adequate. An argument can be made that if it isn't broken, it doesn't need to be fixed
- Cost. If a factory coil is still working, it is cheaper (for the cost of a coil) to leave it in place than to replace it. Cap, rotor, and spark plugs will also last longer in a stock configuration (they still need to be replaced of course, but the wear interval is longer)
Once the threads are sorted out between advantages of stock ignition in the General Forum, and advantages of modified ignition in the Modification Forum, each owner will be able to compare them side by side and decide for him or herself which way to go with his or her own car.
