Hi!
I'm having problems with my automatic transmission, every now and then, the transmission fluid overflows thru the dipstick, to me, seems like I have a breather problem, any one knows where the transmission breather is located?

This car was stored for over 15 years and I found little wasps liked making dirt nest on any hole they found, so I believe the transmission breather hole might be pluged.

Thank you in advance!

There is a breather on the diff, but if the ATF is blowing out it's probably over-full. Check the level with the trans warmed up and engine running. It may take a few dips to get a good read on it.

I've seen several transmissions where mud-wasps (we call them "dirtdobbers" in these here parts) have plugged the vent, although not on a D. When air/fluid heats and expands it will come up the dipstick tube if the vent is clogged. If it comes out, it is overfull as Dave said, or it is overheating. Sounds like your vent is clogged and at least one of these as well.

In addition to what people have said here..the dipstick gasket/o-ring is crap. I had my engine out and put three of those o-rings in there to stop the dipstick from leaking. That didn't work after re-installing the engine. I ended up using an outterstat seal which fits perfectly and ultimately stopped my dipstick leak.

We call them "mud dobbers". You need to check for these in your preflight check on aircraft. I've found them in the fuel vent lines.

Another place they seem to love is the vent hose coming out of the bottom of the vapor canister in the left, rear pontoon. Rare but not impossible for them to get to the vent for the transmission. It's all the way up near the top of the bell housing on the right side. Very hard to find it when the transmission is in the car. Don't forget to also check the final drive level. Use the procedure in the Workshop Manual to check the level in the automatic transmission. Make sure you are on level ground. Overfilling is bad but underfilling is worse.

Thank's Dave.

I know is not over-full because when it does it, then the oil level is low. Still believe it is a breather problem.

Ron,

Thank's for your reply!

It only lekas every now and then, so it might be that the oil is moving around inside the transmission and it would leak when is all the way to the dipstick.

Ryan,

It is leaking from the top of the dipstick tube, not from the bottom, but thank you for your input!

David,

Thank's for your info, do you happen to have a auto-transmission out so you can take a picture of the breather for me?

Dang it, most of the old vehicles vent to the outside atmosphere and I can't remember hooking that up (several years ago) -- Now I gotta get dirty today!
