I found this on Instagram the car caught on fire and burned up at a rite aid parking lot.
Also the owner claims in the comments he had it sold for 70 grand ???
I think have watch some of his YouTube video before.
Sorry for the screen shots but it was the only way I knew to get the picture.
Reading the comments he says it was 81 October build. He did not carry a fire extinguishers and rite ride would not loan him or sell him one.

More pictures grab from his “live story “ or what ever it is called, the ones that delete like snap chat

When your (or anyone's) property is on fire, you don't ask permission for an extinguisher. You take it.

I'm trying to think if I ever met this guy at a club meeting. What a bummer. :(

(Edit: looking at his other pix, I've never met him in person but did see his youtube videos. I tried to get him to join our Utah club but afaik he never did. Whatever the real story turns out to be, it sucks that another DeLorean is out of commission...)

Yeah that part dumbfounded me.... I would have just grabbed it and used it. Isn’t that what they are there for?

DaraSue

Cursory googling doesn't show any trace of this car having been for sale. I suppose he could have deleted the listing thinking he had a buyer or sold to someone he knew without listing it publicly, but it's odd.

Yeah that part dumbfounded me.... I would have just grabbed it and used it. Isn’t that what they are there for?

Yeah, that's the fishiest part of this story. My car's on fire, I'm knocking the President out to get to an extinguisher if I have to. Of course, I carry one with me and have a passive one in the engine compartment so hopefully I won't be in that situation. Seriously, people, if you learn one thing from these forums, CARRY A FREAKING FIRE EXTINGUISHER!

Agreed. Worst case is you pay for it later. I had to buy a couple for the local Pizza Hut a few decades ago. Not a DeLorean fire . . .

The guy's brother says the car was rear-ended in a hit-and-run right before the fire started.

I don't know the guy or anything about him(apparently he is some kind of YouTube star). I do however recognize several red flags and if I see them, I'm sure the police and insurance see them. Thats the thing with what little stardom he has, if you try to pull the wool over our eyes, you are trying to fool a lot more people than just a few local government employees.

I'll just say that insurance companies have people who are damn good at sniffing out fraud and that includes what started car fires. He better be telling the truth.

Ugh, I hate to think that anybody would deliberately destroy any classic car, let alone a D. But in a world where people will literally poison their own kids for money or just attention, it's possible. This guy was apparently in his mid-30s, with a big house and a car collection including the $140K BMW that got vandalized. Either he has a really amazing job, comes from a rich family or was really insanely overextended. If it's a scam I hope they nail him. There are quite a few comments on the facebook threads saying the BMW incident was a scam but I can't find any objective confirmation one way or the other online.

The car was 4412, anybody know any more about its history? The original plate was Tennessee and he said it was a one-owner, but he picked it up in Illinois when he first bought it?

(Edit: The guy's parents commented on his FB that he's actually only 22, and supposedly that's why he couldn't insure the cars for the full value. Really want to know what job a 22-year-old gets that pays for all this stuff and is legal.)

https://www.facebook.com/groups/116227491775513/permalink/1741533219244924/

Apparently he was trying to sell the car on eBay claiming that it had been restored at DPI. Josh jumped in to say they never actually worked on it and the work was done with their parts by a third party in Indiana, posted screenshots of him telling the guy to change the ad. Guy claims ad was posted by broker and couldn't be changed but was raised to $100K reserve so that nobody would buy it. Ad is still archived at eBay here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/322924390133?ul_noapp=true

Seller posted another ad locally listing it for $75K. I won't link to it b/c it has the guy's personal info but it's still up. Josh doesn't seem incredibly pleased with DPI's name being thrown around by this dude and I foresee some shit going down...

DaraSue

That makes NO sense whatsoever.

Maybe what they meant was "He couldn't afford the premiums to insure it for full value." Which, I would think someone who could afford a garage full of $30-130K cars could afford to insure them, but I guess everybody has their priorities.

(Also he mentioned somewhere in the comments that his previous insurance dropped him after the BMW incident. Maybe that had something to do with it. Something tells me whoever he's with now won't buy off on twice being coincidence...)

(And looking at the pix in the ebay listing, his car looks like it's pretty comparable to mine other than the lower mileage and the polishing kit. Mine's priceless but it's nice to know I could get $70K for it if I were really hard up, LOLOLOLOL...)

kbrown84

The car came from Indiana...INDMC (myself, Jason Sharkey, and Rick Vermillion) did the bare minimum to get the car on the road as Daryl wanted to attempt to drive it from Indy to Maryland after only working on it for 3 days. It broke down (unsurprisingly) and was sent to DPI for some repairs, not a restoration. I met the dude and know the car, and I can tell you something doesn’t add up. I’m sure as the investigation continues, we will hear more. I still don’t see how a light rear collision could start a fire like it did... the blame of Rite-Aid is, in my opinion, quite the distraction tactic.

DaraSue
01-07-2018, 11:00 PM
Whoops, I misread Josh's posts, he did say they'd "assisted with minor sorting of items after the fact" in his text screenshots. Curious how Daryl got from that to the $30k worth of restoration work claimed in the ebay copy, unless that was the total he spent on the whole car? He blames the agent for posting wrong info in the listing but cites that same figure in the classified ad that he posted several weeks after the ebay listing ended.

Kolin, are you at liberty to say what this car sold to Daryl for?

I type this with a heavy heart as at the end of the day another car is gone. In the past months I have tirelessly worked to resolve the owners blatant misrepresentation and fraudulent statements of his car as a vehicle fully restored and built by DeLorean Industries. At first this was through open dialog as previously posted explaining the clear issue where the owner admitted fault. When the behavior continued we were forced to escalate to legal means against all parties involved. Despite asserting our rights to protect our companies image and product integrity false ads continued to appear from the owner. At this point due to the scope of exposure associated with his “incident” we have no choice but to seek further action against this individual.

I am not here to speculate on the owners misfortune or deliberate paths taken out of financial desperation. I am here though to clearly reiterate our disgust with the deliberate misrepresentation and use of my companies name in a manner to gain a financial advantage while selling a DeLorean. We have had to explain to countless buyers and owners that this car is not one of our restorations and or builds. From the outside looking in potential buyers are improperly informed on this being the quality of our offerings.

Our involvement was simple: A year and a half ago as a favor to the previous owner in Indiana we dropped what we were doing and inspected a few concerns on this car they couldn't get sorted before the new owner wanted to drive cross country. Most of these costs were passed on to the seller not the new owner of the car. We sorted a few minor things ranging from a column bushing to a water pump and upper door seals. This by no means in any book constitutes anything close to a “restoration” being performed. Six months went past with no word again from the owner as he enjoyed the car in Utah. This is when we received the text message attached to this post which was the beginning of the downward false sale spiral and subsequent end to the car. I'll leave it to others to pass judgment on this situation and where it is headed. We are obviously not even being accused of anything and are the accusers in this case. I simply don't want our brand to be associated with sub par cars and will do what ever it takes to make sure our products are not misrepresented.

55043

At the end of the day the above would have been left unsaid and I would have stayed quiet on this subject despite personal opinions on what happened. If he had simply done as he was asked I wouldn't say a word. It was truly a simple request in the kindest form of cease and desist possible. A friendly message to stop openly acknowledged and then ignored.

:jawdrop:

Hoooolyyyy shit.

Dude buys a $140k BMW and not health insurance? Like, not to get too close to the politics line but however ridiculously expensive premiums are, if you can afford multiple collector cars you ought to be able to afford health insurance, especially when you're 22. Really wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt but this story gets worse and worse.

(I wonder if he had undisclosed mechanical issues with it. Mine was a resurrected barn car too and I had to deal with a rampaging case of block rot. If his only had 8000 miles on it, it probably sat for even longer than mine did.)

Sooo....my hypothesis...

Guy list car for $75k..gets a buyer who comes and sees the car, figures out it wasnt all the ad said..prolly offers a reasonable amount and walks away when its not accepted...so guy torches his car to collect insrance..of course in a highly visible location to add to the credibility that it wasnt on purpose.

At least based on whats been posted so far.

If time travel was possible, I'd go back to visit earlier generations (like those who lived through the Depression,) and tell them: "one day in the future there will be people who ask strangers to pay for their $35K toy.......and others who don't think that's out of the ordinary."

They need to worry less about the DeLorean they torched and more about the future as in future legal defense fees.

As we often say around here, the value of a car is only what someone will pay for it, not what the seller is asking. So a cynic might say that having a Bill of Sale for $70k is a great way to prove to an insurance company what your car is worth, should it accidentally subsequently burn to the ground.

"No donations yet"

(It's early in the morning still, but considering how successful other "crowdfund my DeLorean" campaigns have been...)

Here the guy is again claiming his car was at DPI for a year getting restored: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1439169322770491&id=109204822433621&_rdr

Considering that both Josh and the people who sold him the car have contradicted this, wondering if this guy is really one of those people who lie about everything to the point where if they say the sky is blue, you should get a second opinion. Ugh. I genuinely don't understand people whose ages are in the double digits and still lie for attention.

This is unbelievable. I'll admit, this looks like it could be fraud, or an attempt to get more than full insured value from the insurance company by trying to establish a bs value claiming the car was sold at that price. I don't believe his story of an accident and rite aid denying him help. My guess? He and his girlfriend got attitude off the bat (and understandably so) got heated, and the employees felt threatened. Now he is trying to add that misfortune to the equation...... and such the victim.
I hope the insurance investigators see this thread on Google, and realize there could be more to the story, and should start to dig a little deeper. Two claims on two vehicles (comprehensive) doesn't look good to me....

Not uncommon for an owner to have a shop look a car over, do some minor work and then put the car up for sale claiming extensive work done prior to the sale for the purpose of increasing the value. Using a high profile shop adds to the illusion. A knowledgeable buyer would want to see the work ticket to see just what was done and maybe even call the shop. My guess is there was no "buyer" for $70K but that's his story for the insurance company. Doesn't matter, he will only get what the policy provides for unless an investigation indicates arson. A bigger problem is going to be for the shop, if anyone can prove it was faulty work that caused the fire. The last one to put a hand on it is going to be the most logical suspect. I wonder if Rite-Aid has video cameras and what they would show?

Per his video on the i8 - 3 years ago he paid $7k for a 10 year old E46 328i and 6 months ago had worked his way up to a more recent 335i. And then, suddenly "just doing my thing, doing what I do" he buys an i8 "for cash" as well as the D .

From a youtube channel with 2000 subscribers and doing door-to-door sales of something unspecified? :umm:

I exchanged correspondence with Jason Torchinsky at Jalopnik briefly and they're researching it as a story, trying to get a hold of the owner. Shouldn't be a problem since the guy seems to live for the spotlight. I doubt they'll come up with any definitive conclusions but maybe they'll find some interesting facts by shining a light on it.

Something else that doesn't quite add up about all this - he goes on and on about how his car only had 8,000 miles on it, and the now-deleted KSL listing made it sound like it had been placed in storage in 1982, but the pic when he first bought it had a TN plate in a style that wasn't issued until the mid-2000s and a slogan "YESITIS" that strongly implies the previous owner was driving it around often enough to get asked that question.

The ad also mentioned the car having a new timing belt. Uhhh... Thinking somebody who doesn't know whether his car has a belt or a chain probably doesn't know about angle drives and their proclivities for failure, either. Wondering if maybe the car actually had a lot more miles than he thought and maybe that's a factor in whatever's going on here...

As stated earlier, this guy is full of crap and has no real clue what is going on. I've followed some of his statements and retraction and coupled with story from guys close to him, this is all shady.

I worked on the car before he bought it...the mileage was legit, and it was a clean car. It’s a shame what he did to it. But also, he didn’t purchase it from the original owner, either.

Its almost like he has a vendetta against Rite Aid..which is completely unfounded. If he indeed tried a small fire extinguisher and it didnt work, and the flames were getting bigger by the time he supposedly asked in the store, then its really beyond the point where you can only just sit back and wait for the fire dept...also if there was a car on fire with growing flames, no one in their right mind is going to get close enough to use a hand held extinguisher. So I'm perplexed about what he thinks is gonna happen..prolly trying to get some kind of settlement from them?

That news article is exactly what I wanted to see and exactly what should have been said. What makes me sick, is this guy is going to cry to the world and pump his YouTube channel and end up making money off this deal. I mean if people can make money unboxing a new phone and smashing it, why not burn a Delorean and use the story....

The guy only has 3k subs and does everything he can to promote his channel. I have almost that and I don't do crap. All I do is share my scale model builds as I make them and it's been over 2 years since I have built anything.
I'm sure he monetized his channel, I never bothered but the point being he isn't making Jacksquat with 3k subscribers.

I have noticed that every single time that someone asks an honest question, not a jab, not an insult or anything offensive, just an honest question like when he tried to sell it, why he stated that he spent 30k with DPI to restore his car when he knew it wasn't true.
He immediately removes and blocks any question whatsoever and without hesitation.
I can't help but to think all this extra attention excites him but part of him has to be scared shitless.

The threat of potentially being busted for insurance fraud (assuming that's the case) would have anyone scared.

Really the more this story floats and the more details about the guy that come out, the fishier it gets.

On another note.... couldnt he have burned the i8, rather than the Delorean?

"Why People Are Asking Questions About That Bizarre Viral DeLorean Fire" by Jason Torchinsky

Unrelatedly he seems to have been charged with "No Proof of Insurance last year, well 2016.

I wonder if that's what he means that he is "under insured" in this case.

Rear ended my butt! I don't see any damage to that bumper other than the fire.

Didn't matter how many fire extinguishers he had access to. He can't film and fight the fire at the same time.
Besides YouTube doesn't give you money for the number of fire extinguishers you use up and if he was to put out the fire he wouldn't have anything interesting to film. Just imagine the title, fire put out before too late - views 3! To attention seekers like him the choice was clear.

If the car wasn't rear-ended and he filed a "False Police Report" he has that to worry about too besides insurance fraud and Arson. This is going to be a slow-motion train wreck and it won't be pretty when it ends. More to follow.

.

I thought that too. Neither rear fenders are wrinkled, so if the car was "hit" it was more of a "tap", which may explain why the "other driver" drove away.

So this car crossed my mind and I wondered what happened to it or the owner (who even the police were a bit skeptical about). Daryl Kemsley made a video explaining it and the suspiciously trashed BMW in what looked to be very upscale neighborhood. He gave up his dreams of being another Logan Paul and pretty much made himself out to be a victim.

According to him, the insurance denied his claim on the DeLorean and he is stuck with a melted car. The close ups of the burned car showed several things. First, the rear end impact he claims started the fire was so light that it didn't even scratch either quarter. Second, looks like it has braided fuel lines installed. He said the insurance investigation couldn't figure out why it started so they refused to pay....which seems implausible. Burden of proof is still to the accuser no?

If you take him at his word, it's a sucky thing to happen, especially getting shafted by the insurance. I personally see a shady guy with a ton of red flags and if he is indeed a con artist/scammer, what a just reward having to look at your melted and trashed DeLorean in the backyard knowing you and you alone willingly inflicted the damage.

What I noticed in that video is that if the fuel lines were original, they would have all melted in the fire since the originals were made of Teflon. You can clearly see that the fuel lines are intact. I now, really wonder how this fire started. Possible fuel leak at the washer and banjo bolt but who knows..

I thought they looked like braided lines(albeit charred), I said that mainly because they were still there but you can see what looks like metal in places plus they got the "standard" braided line symmetry thing going on.

In his defense, I have to ask how would a dumb kid engineer a engine fire so that an expert could not figure out the orgins?(assuming he is telling the truth about his insurance company sending an expert).

It doesn't make sense the insurance company would deny a claim because they could not understand why it happened....it makes more sense they would deny the claim because they actually did figure out it was arson. So in order to even go down his trail of excuses, you must first believe him and I have a hard time doing that.

David T
11-15-2020, 03:17 PM
Hard to know the circumstances of why the insurance company denied the claim. Without hearing their side of it all we can do is guess. In most States there is an appeal process but again, we don't know all of the facts so maybe he did appeal it and lost. There are a lot of things about this that don't "add up". In cases where an insurance company suspects arson, they refer it to the AG's office for further investigation. They may also file against the claimant for insurance fraud and if it is really serious the Feds get involved using mail fraud. One possibility is the insurance company could have told the claimant to go away or they would pursue these charges because they do suspect arson but just don't want to spend the effort to really get hard evidence. Again, this is unusual because insurance companies will generally pay out on this kind of claim involving a fire without much investigation. On cars with fuel injection, engine fires have become more common and in most cases wind up a total loss.

He got the car from Sharkey and the Indiana group and replacing the old lines with DPI's set was pretty SOP for them, maybe Kolin can chime in with more details.

Back to the video - you can't get a loan for a classic car? That would be news to many in this community, although most of us aren't self-employed 20-somethings. :rolleyes1::rolleyes1::rolleyes1:

Also interesting how he talks about "the community" turning its back on him, when nobody actually seems to have known or interacted with him prior to this incident. He certainly wasn't involved in the UT club at all. And maybe the BMW community has a higher douchebag ratio than we do, but I've never seen people in the DeLorean community hate on somebody for being a young owner. Trying to talk prospective owners out of getting in over their head, yeah, but not being a jerk to a new owner just because they're in their 20s. And who was happy to see the dude's car burn up? Most people I saw were pretty bummed about a DeLorean being trashed, even if they thought its owner was a scamming douche.

Best of luck to this dude in his attempt to rebrand himself as some kind of enlightenment guru... :rolleyes1:

I took his comments on the "car community" were people he physically interacted with, his followers and people who commented on his videos - not the DeLorean community. Like you said, you and UT DMCers didn't know him. Other than a "delorean on fire" video being posted here I would not have heard of him.

This!

I know an insurance adjuster and she said they pay all kinds of claims that she knows is fraud, but don't have proof.

Two other things, 1. it's pretty rare for people to throw rocks though your window for nothing. He was targeted for something. (Not for being young with a nice car) 2. Why did he make this video? Are we supposed to send him money? Is he going to be a self help guru?

I didn't watch the second video. Can't stand to lessen to him.

Dara is right. Dude actually came out and was in the shop with us the entire time we went through the car. I personally installed the fuel system on this car (except the accumulator, because eff that noise…someone else did that.) I do know he attempted to drive it to Boston untested, and wound up overheating it in Ohio and took it to DPI, he claimed that Josh “restored” the car, but he did not…merely made it roadworthy again. Guy is a straight pathological liar, and I didn’t trust him any farther than I could throw him. But anyway to Dara’s point…yes, it’s SOP for us to replace the ENTIRE fuel system on cars that we flipped.

Sitting in 10" of snow and this scammer crossed my mind. Apparently he is still at it. This looks to be a text conversation with an AI lawyer, but sounds legit from the victim's POV. According to the victim, he invested $300k and it vanished. If he had done just a little Google search on this dude before handing over that money...

Bottom line, in my world, Everything is a scam and everything you see on a screen is fake.
