Broken lug nut

So when I checked my tire pressure I noticed one of the rear lugs looked like the top of it had broken off. I can see the end of the bolt inside it, is it safe to drive like this?

I heard we could maybe find replacements at Costco, is that still true?

It needs to be fixed but as long as the rest are tight you’ll make it home. I am not sure where a local replacement can be had but you can still drive on it until your replacement comes should you need to order one. It’s as simple as pounding the broken one out and a new one in.

Good call. I think I see the hex now. If it’s just the cap, only issue you may run into is you might have to use a smaller socket to remove the nut.

Assuming, from an aesthetic standpoint, you want all your lug nuts to look good then here's a good discussion for replacement solid lug nuts (this is a long thread so go to the end for recent info):

Yeah, the actual hexagonal part of the nut seems to still be intact and I drove it about 15 miles with no issues, but I'm a little worried that it broke because it was overtightened. The mechanic who did my shocks was one of these cocky dudes who's 10 years younger than the car and he made fun of me for trying to rewire the door in my Accord even though it turned out I was right, so maybe he didn't listen when I told him what the torque spec was, either. :swear1: (no, I'm not planning on taking it back there anytime soon...)

The caps fell off of all my lug nuts. Looks awful, but they work. i would not be concerned.

For the price you pay for them it is a bummer they fall apart in less than a year.

Looks right. As above, I'm pretty sure that's my thread referencing the Honda Lugs but that was like 5 years ago and now a better replacement is out there in the Dorman lugs which I will be buying myself soon. The OE lugs are crap, no matter how good you take care of them sooner or later they will come apart if some jackass doesn't get on it first with their stupid impact guns(torque bars for impacts work for like a month so assume anyone that has one has a worn out one). I had one set so freaking tight a high end impact would not budge them, thought I was going to break a stud getting it off. I'm sure a lot of jealous a-holes think it's funny to put them on at 160lbs.

It is more than a cosmetic issue, your lug wrench will not fit to remove them. You will have to force a socket onto it to undo it. You should replace any that have loose covers or just get a new set.

I ordered a new set, but I can't get the old ones off. On my Hondas I usually just stomp on the handle of the wrench but I'm afraid of breaking something. Is there a trick to this or should I just take it to a shop and let them loosen them with the gun since presumably that's how they got on there so tight in the first place?

I would not use an impact on these personally. They turn too fast, increasing the chance of breaking the stud.
I'd try using a long 4-way lug wrench (or breaker bar with a long extension) with a jack stand supporting one end to keep it perfectly level and square... If one is going to break, it's going to break. If one did break and I didn't want to change any studs myself, I'd put any good ones back on and then take it to a shop.
Same for one where an idiot like Michael mention has ruined the hole or knurls with an impact...If it just spins, stop and take it to the shop.

I've had some lug nuts on so tight that I've bent the T wench using a pipe to get more force. I think removing with an impact would be better. The impact only moves fast when the nut has loosened.

If your lung nuts are torqued to the proper 80 newton-meters, then there should be no issue removing the lug nuts. I always use a breaker bar and a Craftsman Digitork click style torque wrench.

I still couldn't budge the damn things even with a 25" breaker bar and I was afraid of slipping and denting something so I'll just take it to the shop tomorrow. I had a couple of things I want to get done before our Moab road trip next month anyway and this mechanic is a pretty burly dude so maybe be can put more elbow grease into it than I can.
