View Full Version : Electrical Aftermarket in-dash CD player-no power condition-Trouble-shooting?

I recently replaced some LEDs in the dash and cigar lighter, as well as the headlight switch with the new improved DMCH switch. In the process I disturbed the wiring in the cigar lighter and clock areas around the console.

After putting everything together, the new headlight switch works great and I just resolved the hissing noise in the dash, which was the connector being knocked off the back of the mode switch by the headlight switch box and wiring being tucked behind the dash.

The only problem to resolve now is the aftermarket CD player(installed by PO), which no longer works; it does not turn on.

Now I need to retrace the wiring. Normally the red wire on the CD player is constant power and the yellow wire is ignition-only power; or I have these backwards in my thought-process. I checked the wiring diagram and the constant power goes to the clock and cigar lighter and eventually back to the battery; the ignition wire runs back eventually to the key switch circuit.

I felt behind the radio and traced each wire to what I believe was a adaptor/connector to the factory wiring harness; so I believe it is connected fine here.
I plan on checking with a voltmeter for power at each of these with the key on and off.
I will also check the cigar lighter and clock wiring to see if something is loose at those points.

Is there anything/where else I need to check?

Thanks!

Check for a loose ground wire... Off the back of the stereo likely the only black wire... If it's loose fix it... Then check for voltage on the red wire ( normally switched ignition / 12v with key on) then the yellow wire next --memory (12v all the time)

I haven't put an aftermarket stereo in mine yet but this is pretty standard across the board... I've sometimes found people have reversed red and yellow which makes the radio forget settings all the time... (and is not right)

But maybe check for that loose or broken ground wire... 9 out of 10 times I find...

Update: I've actually seen stereos differ with red and yellow ... One is switched and one is constant... Normally yellow is constant on my installs... Top of the head unit normally is labeled as well as the wires coming out of the deck on occasion...

But you sound like you've got an idea as well!

Check the two online fuses going to the radio. You will probably have to remove the center console to get to everything.

I had a similar problem a few months back. I replaced my ac control switch and suddenly the radio wasn't powering on. I discovered the wire that provides 12v of constant power was suddenly dead.

I ran a new 12v purple wire from the wiring harness to the radio and everything worked fine after that.

Some aftermarket radios have their own fuse plugged in to the back of it.
(Don't ask me how I know.)

The problem was a broken wire encased in a blade shaped piece of plastic in the electrical area behind the passenger seat....

Everything now works, cigar lighter, clock (when it wants to), and radio.

Thanks for all of the help!
