View Full Version : Electrical High Beam not Working

VIN 4273 has arrived safely to Auckland, New Zealand. CFR Rinkens (Sharon) and Extreme Global were fantastic to work with, highly recommended.
Now that she is here I have begun going through everything and one issue has surfaced that I hope someone may have encountered before.
Any thoughts about the High Beam both sides not working?
When I push the headlight knob once, which I assume is to engage the park lights, both front indicator lights come on (not flashing which is good). Is this normal, usually here in New Zealand the park light is a separate bulb as part of the main headlights?
When I push the same knob again the regular headlight beam comes on, all good. However when I use the stalk to activate the high beam all lights go off at the front. The instrument light does not come on either when high beam is chosen although it does when regular beam is on. The rear lights work fine.
I have checked the fuse and relay all is good and I can hear a click when engaging the 3 stages of lights, park, normal and high beam. The bulbs look good so I wonder about the switch on the stalk?? Can this be fixed or is a replacement required?
Cheers in advance for your suggestions, if it gets to technical it will be a trip to the Auto Electrician with a wiring diagram.

if both High beams are not working and the High beam indicator is not working, I would suggest checking the High Beam relay. swap the Low and High relays and see if they come on. You already know that low beams work.
Also yes you depress the Head light button once for the running/parking lights, and twice for headlights. That is correct operation. I Recommend Replacing the Light bulb in both the Headlamp and hazard switches with LEDs. will help keep the switch running cooler and last longer.

Thank you for you reply. I did switch the relays and the high beam does not function. Perhaps some problem with the stalk control?[

It's possible. Just to verify you are pushing the stalk forward towards the front of the car, correct. They don't click like a lot of cars.

Definitely pushing the stalk forward and if I push towards me to "flash" the high beams I get nothing too. The regular beam goes out. I like your suggestion about LED's but they will not allow me to install them at present. They will only accept LEDs on cars originally fitted with them. Bureaucracy at its very best!

If the fuse is good and you've switched relays with no change, then you may have a bad ground. Check this thread and look at the headlamp wiring diagram. should help. "All Wiring Schematics "

One last thought, Could the head lamps be blown? maybe try swapping a low beam into a high beam just to see if it works. I like to try the simple things first to eliminate possibilities.

Make sure the headlight relay sockets have all pins seated in the socket. Sometimes a pin gets pushed out of the socket when inserting the relay.
You can make up a jumper wire and test the circuit at the headlight relay socket. That would verify that the circuit after the relay is working.

I think this will be my next thing to check. Cheers.

Thank you Dave, I will check this too. The jumper wire suggestion is a bit beyond me but I will look into this. Cheers.

It does seem odd that the normal beam functions until the stalk control is pushed forward and then I get no normal beam or high beam? It seems to me that it must be the switch on the stalk??

Yes, it could be the stalk/dip switch. But first check Fuse 15, high beam (Main Beam) relay. Pull it, inspect it, clean the contacts. Replace or swap in a known good one if in doubt.
Short version: The high beam fuse and the high beam relay, driven by the stalk switch, run all 4 headlights.
Normally when the switch is moved to high beam position it turns OFF the low beam filament in the low beam lamps (turns off low beam relay) and it turns ON the high beam filament in the low beam lamps AND the high beams (only one filament in the high beams). Also turns on the blue HB indicator on the dash.
So if all 4 lamps (and the high beam indicator) are off when switch is in HI position then the high beam circuit (which drives all 4 headlamps) is off when it should be on.
That can happen if you have a bad dip switch, bad connector at dip switch, bad high beam fuse/socket or bad high beam relay, in order of circuit position. You know the relay is OK. Next easiest check is the High Beam fuse. It is between the switch and the HB relay. If the fuse checks out then you can probe for +12V at the fuse socket to see if the switch and i the switch connector are delivering voltage to it.

Pull one of the high beams and check the filament for continuity. You can also check for voltage. Very possible all of the high beam filaments are burnt out.

Per the wiring diagram, I suspect that your issue is after the main beam relay. When the stalk switch is activated (by pushing the stalk forward) it cuts the power to the dip beams and energizes the main beam circuit. IIRC the dip beam relay is not cut out when the stalk is pulled back to flash the high beams.
With a multi-meter check to see if power is getting to the main beam relay when the stalk switch is engaged to the forward position. (with the headlight switch tuned on to the second detent) If you get 12 volts, then you know that the main beam relay is getting power from the switch.
Once you verify that the relay is getting power then, with the high beams engaged, check to see if fuse 15 is getting power. I've seen a number of melted fuse 14 and fuse 15 connections over the years. Thus, your problem may be with the fuse box connections as opposed to the actual fuse itself.
Best of luck!

He is suggesting to replace the bulbs in the switches with leds not the actual headlights.

Hopefully this picture is clear. I wonder if this wire not being attached is the source of the problem of not having any High Beam?? Any thoughts.

That purple wire looks like a power wire going to the buzzer module. Don't let that ground out.
Do your high beams work if you pull the stalk towards you? In any case, check power to high beam relay, and swap low and high to test if it is a bad relay.
You can also find a PDF or jpg copy of the delorean wiring diagrams on DMCtalk. Just look it up on Google.
EDIT: Here's a copy of the schematic https://i.imgur.com/xlQjMoD.png

This thread is a restart off of the OP's other thread about the problem here. (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?16890-High-Beam-not-Working)
In that thread he reported that the high beams do not light regardless of stalk position including the pull-flash position. He also reported that swapping the high-low relays changes nothing.
There was a post (#14) in that original thread suggesting he check Fuse 15 [High ("Main") Beam] to see if it's OK, also to check for +12V on either of the Fuse 15 terminals - with fuse out - when high beams are supposed to be ON.
Did not yet see an answer about that.

Thank you. When I push the lever away from me all the front lights go out. If I push it forward the same happens. The warning lamp on the display does not illuminate either. Park and single beam work fine but go out when the stalk is used. I will take another look at all the suggestions and continue to work on it.

Thank you Rich. Yes this is a continuation of the same problem. I found this wire and had hoped it might have been the problem but I can see it is for the buzzer. Being hopeful of an easy fix... I will go through all the suggestions and see what I can find out. Electrics are not my thing but I enjoy a challenge.....

I think you would find your problem if you followed the steps in post #16 (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?16890-High-Beam-not-Working&p=239452&viewfull=1#post239452).

The last component in the high beam circuit before the dash lamp and the 4 high beam filaments (all in parallel to each other) is Fuse 15.
Suggesting you check that fuse and voltage to fuse just to easily rule it out.
Ron's troubleshooting method and schematic is worthwhile for verifying stalk switch is doing its job additional to checking voltage at fuse.
I don't see it being Fuse 15 at this point -- It doesn't Flash either (Fuse 6)...Could have been both, but 15 has already been checked (post 1....and verified).
It will fail step 3 if Fuse 15 is bad. And the Flash part of step 4 if fuse 6 is bad (test while in low beam mode).

Right, Ron. I did miss the 'checked fuse' report in this thread.

Thank you to all who posted suggestions on how to fix this problem. Not having much "smarts" for electrical work I got a highly recommended Auto Electrician to take a look. He said he had never worked on a D before and was really excited about seeing the car. The problem was below the relay, a connection which was hard to access but had worked it's way off. Really pleased to have made a new contact who also knows the K Jet system and is a Dodge Charger enthusiast.
:)
Always appreciate hearing how a troubleshooting adventure eventually closes out. Thanks for sharing.
Good bit of sleuthing by your new best friend. Problem sorted and you have a new resource. A knowledgeable K-Jet pro is something to treasure.
