View Full Version : DeLorean Convention and Show (DCS_2020) - Initial Planning

DeLorean Owners, Fans, and Enthusiasts,

Thanks to everyone who has supported DCS over the years. Without your help,
DCS Events would have faded into DeLorean history, especially after DCS 2014.
Although DCS continues to evolve, the core intent of DCS has remained the same;
DCS is a gathering of the DeLorean community to celebrate all things DeLorean.

With the successes of the past two DCS events, we have decided to pursue the
process of organizing and running at least one more DCS Event ... DCS 2020.
The DCS Planning Team began exploring this process after the local British Car
Show and it completed an initial venue location review by the end of 2018.

After reviewing a half dozen possible venues for DCS 2020, we have 3 finalists
that we will be focusing on, over the next few months. Of the 3 finalists, they
all have the possibility of being used for future DCS events, but no final decision
has been made yet (including DCS 2020), as we wait for additional cost details.

There are many criteria that go into the selection process, but we have used
a similar formula for both DCS 2016 and DCS 2018, to have an indoor car show
(so weather is not an issue) with an adjacent hotel, again, to take "weather"
out of the equation, whether it's rain or just the heat of the Midwest Summers.

Keeping costs low is a key goal, so we work very hard to keep guest rooms at
$99 (or less) with the host hotel, and we prefer most DCS attendees stay at the
host hotel, to cut down daily travel to the convention, reducing late arrivals
for daily events. Each hotel has an adjacent expo center or convention center.

DCS dinners have been used to gather attendees together, have a good meal and
listen to Keynote Speakers and Presenters. Cost of dinners and presentations
help pay for most of VIP costs, including their travel, room and meal expenses.
We have been quite successful bringing in many VIPs with this current formula.

As many attendees of DCS 2018 already know, I have current family obligations
that do not allow me to be away from home for more than a day or two, so this
will limit the locations for DCS 2020. The only way I can continue with DCS,
for now, is to base a DCS Event within an hour or so from home (Chicago area).

With all this in mind, 2 of the 3 finalists are still in the running, but since
these 2 are each about 4-5 hours from Chicago, it's unlikely either is chosen
for DCS 2020, based on their proximity. One is in Southeast Michigan and the
other is in Southwest Ohio, relatively close to Northwest Kentucky.

The current first place finalist was the runner-up location for DCS 2018. The
reason it was not used for DCS 2018 was because a new hotel was not built yet.
The hotel is currently under construction and the grand opening is anticipated
for Labor Day Weekend 2019. We plan to have DeLoreans at the Grand Opening.

The brand new hotel would be less than a year old for DCS 2020, so it should be
a great venue for our event (with any 'new kinks' worked out by then, lol). The
hotel is a Best Western GLO (the company's latest line of hotel chains) and it
is only a 10-15 minute ride to Midway Airport or a 30 minute ride to O'Hare.

While this new hotel (with 70+ rooms) is adjacent to an Expo Center, there is
also another brand new hotel going up about 10 minutes away, with another two
very well established Best Western hotels 10-15 minutes away, all for overflow.
You can even stay in downtown Chicago, since you will be only 30 minutes away.

Since it will be several months yet before any contracts are signed, I will
not be naming the exact specifics now, since details are yet to be finalized,
but there has been significant effort put into keeping the DCS Event "alive",
and we hope to be able to report some additional good news by this Summer.

Thanks,
Rich W.

Nice to see there is a chance DCS 2020 will happen; best of luck as I had a great time in 2016 and hope as many people as possible get to experience one.

I am very excited about this and plan to attend. Although I have owned my Delorean since 2005, this will be my first DCS.

All the years I've been around the Delorean community I have never been to DCS - I look forward to attending in 2020.

I vote SE MI because visitors to the area can visit 3 of JZD's old residences and the old DMC offices at Long Lake & Woodward. Rich, if you need any assistance in locations I would be happy to help since I lived in Metro Detroit for 35 years. I wonder if Cobo Hall in Downtown Detroit would host?

OT: One of JZD's houses was for sale years back while my parents were looking to purchase a home in the area. It's in a neighborhood where a good friend lives.

I didn't notice the venue discussion when this was posted the first time. Very unfortunate to see Chicago is the likely location again. I know that's easiest on DMCMW and if that makes for a better overall show experience for everyone, then great. That said, 2016 in Springfield was fantastic. It would be very unlikely that I would attend a show in Chicago. I drive through there several times a year and have no desire to do so in the DMC. That might be my own personal fatigue weighing in a bit more than it should so your turnout may not be affected. Good luck.

Las Vegas to Chicago is almost identically the distance from Tucson to Dayton (2014) which we drove with zero issues, but now my wife and I have two little kids, and in 2014 we were just engaged. No way we will be be able to make it. And I think if I went solo I'd come home to an empty house, lol.

There have been a few issues that will likely prevent having a DCS Event in Southeast MI anytime soon.

- Cost for Indoor Facilities - as most of you know or could guess, Detroit Metro area is heavily union
and the associated costs for these facilities can be quite expensive. Cobo Hall is a union shop.
While we have nothing against union shops, costs must be passed along and it will impact attendance.

- Facilities with union shops require their folks to do most everything involving move in/out and setup,
and this increases costs. In addition, I do not think most owners will want to have someone else drive
their cars in and out of a building due to specific move in/out rules (in most of the union shops)

- The only way the current DCS Planning Team will have an event in SE MI is to time the event around
the same time as the Woodward Dream Cruise, and include many of the auto museums in Detroit area.
This presents more logistics challenges, but the Team feels this would make it one of the best DCS ever.

If there is anyone who would like to take the lead for a DCS Event in SE MI, please let me know or the
Planning Team know and we would be happy to pass along our notes for you to have a successful event.

DCS will not be in Chicago for the same reasons it will not be at Cobo Hall in Detroit ... costs for union shops.

As I mentioned for Detroit Metro, the costs for facilities that are union shops are more expensive and those
costs would need to be passed along to attendees. Nothing against union shops ... just stating the reality.

Most union shops also have very strict move in/out rules and I do not think most DeLorean owners will want
others driving and parking their cars in the facility and drive out afterward. Again, just relaying the "rules".

If DCS 2020 is confirmed for the Chicago area, the event will be in the suburbs, not in downtown Chicago.
While proximity to DMCMW is nice, if it happens, it is not a major deciding factor for any future DCS events.

Nothing confirmed yet, and we may not be able to confirm until later this Summer or Fall.

The DCS Planning Team is still waiting on negotiated event costs and facility availability.

Stay Tuned.

In Cobo Hall for the Autorama events years back I was allowed to drive cars in/out of the facility and basically do whatever we needed. Wonder if it wasn't union back then. I stopped attending/judging in 2009.

I agree about scheduling around WDC. Anyone who has not been there would certainly enjoy! I haven't missed one since it started in 1995.

This is a digression and may only apply to me for the most part and is not a reflection on your efforts and decision making processes. To get to Chicago from Pittsburgh or other points from the NE means a very long monotonous 8+ hour stare at I-80/90. And the reward when you're done is...Chicago. Because I make that drive a few times a year for work I was disappointed to see that 2020 looks like it's going to be in basically the same place it was in 2018, Greater Chicago. Again, putting on the best show to satisfy the greatest amount of people is the goal and I'm rooting for your success; just wanted to take a moment to explain the reason for my earlier comment.

You mentioned SW Ohio as a possibility. I could probably make that but not Chicago. SW Ohio would be more centrally located in the eastern US.

Parts of SW Ohio were recently impacted by tornados on Memorial Day weekend,
so location availability may become a possible issue for planning for DCS 2020.

Incidentally, there are several large wild-fires just West of Spokane and DOA Expo,
with lots of smoke impacting the Spokane area. Hopefully the smoke will dissipate.

Progress on the new hotel next to the Expo Center near Chicago has been slow too,
so finalized plans (if they happen) will be delayed until Fall.

Missouri would be good. That's a central location.

One idea for a future DCS type convention location could be Branson, Missouri. Plenty of tourist stops, shows and lodging especially during the summer months plus being just north of the Ozarks so plenty of scenery and lakes to visit. Might be an idea to partner with the Branson Travel Agencies in the area as they might be of assistance. Not sure if there is a large enough convention facility there to house an inside show as the temps and humidity may be a bit high in August. Just a thought... I would be inclined as I have a 4 hour drive there and back home to scope out and research locations for a central USA event.

Branson is home to the Silver Dollar City amusement park which is nationally recognized. Might be a cool event to have a car show there since our DeLoreans are silver right? They hold a Moonlight Madness (open until midnight) event in late July / early August.

I made DCS 2016 in Springfield and it was a great event for my father and I listening to all the informative talks and seeing everyone's hard work on their cars! I hope the event lives on for many years to come.

*10 minute laters... yes, they do have a convention center: https://www.bransoncc.com/

Hmm.... I feel I'm going to get myself in trouble soon so I better stop...

Sorry for the very long ‘radio silence’ but I have been way too busy at work with a new project.

Unfortunately, this means that progress has been very slow on finalizing location and details for DCS_2020,
but some progress has been made between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays (at least a bit, so far).

The good news (and big news) is that we have a very Special VIP Guest confirmed to attend DCS_2020 ...

Zachary DeLorean has confirmed he will be attending DCS_2020 (most likely Friday before the Car Show).

Additional VIP Guests will be announced as they confirm, but this will most likely be after location and dates
are ‘locked in’ when contracts are signed. Likely locations are still SE Ohio or the Near Chicago Suburbs.

New logistic challenges have come up (again) since DCS_2018, so these are attempted to be worked out in
advance of confirming location and dates, but the dates will most likely be Aug. 12-16 or Aug. 19-23, 2020.

Based on my work schedule, I will try to get more details finalized in the next few weeks (before February?)

More details to follow.

Thanks,
Rich W.

Dear Rich,

Thanks very much for the update! While I certainly don't mean to presume to qualify myself as a "VIP," I do want to make sure you know I'm very interested in attending and bringing the final version of my documentary "DeLorean -- Living the Dream" to share with everyone at DCS. I hope there's still room in the schedule to slot me / my movie in, and I'll of course email you privately to discuss the possibilities.

Happy New Year,

- Jordan

Hi Rich, Any official word on dates and location?

Sorry, contract(s) not signed yet. I have been slammed with the Flu (or a really bad cold)
since the end of January, and although I feel better, I’m still playing “catch up” on a few
projects (including DCS 2020) and I’m still hoping to sign contract(s) as soon as possible.

Dates are still likely to be August 11 or August 12 through August 16, 2020 and the likely
location is now a new “front runner” and will likely be in the Far West Suburbs of Chicago.
(changes due to new expected Summer construction at the previously selected locations)

More details after contract signing is completed .... hopefully soon.

DeLorean Owners, Fans and Enthusiasts,

Details are being finalized for DCS 2020, and we have kept the tentative dates of August 12 through August 16, 2020.

Location should be announced soon as well, but we also anticipate keeping the tentative location as the Chicago area.

With the recent cancelling of the Geneva Auto Show 2020, the DCS Planning Team has been working thoughtfully and
carefully, to finalize this year's DCS Event, with consideration to other events and happenings, since December 2019.

As mentioned earlier, we plan to try doing things a little differently at this event, while maximizing all attendees ability
to see as many of our VIPs as possible and to see and listen to as many presentations as they want, throughout DCS.

More details to follow soon.

Thanks,
Rich W.

I haven't heard anything new either, but having worked on Expo, I'd wager the DCS team is holding off to see what happens with this coronavirus insanity. The venue we worked with in Spokane (a Marriott property) offered no flexibility at all for canceling once the contract was signed and if that's SOP for venues that can host an event the size of DCS, I can see how they might not want to make a commitment right now when multiple states are banning gatherings of more than 100 people. I've read conflicting opinions from the supposed experts about whether the summer will kill this bug and it's gambling a lot on whether things will get better.

Rich & team, is there a point where you guys plan to make a go/no-go decision? The event could still be successful even if things aren't finalized until a few months out (we had the bulk of our Expo registrations in the last 2-3 months) but I think we'd all understand if you wanted to take a breather until 2022. :(

DeLorean owners, fans and enthusiasts,

As DaraSue correctly summarized, the DCS Planning Team has been wrestling with the actual and the possible impacts
of COVID-19 since it became a potential global issue in December 2019 and January 2020. The planning of DCS events
is challenging enough on its own (including economic crisis of past DCS events), but the health implications of this virus
along with travel restrictions, limits on size of group gatherings, and all local/national mandates adds another dimension.

While the team continues to work on the event details, it is unclear when we could be assured our event will be allowed
at the National, State and Local levels, and although it may change again, our current Go or No Go date is May 1, 2020.
If we are unable to assure attendees by May 1, it is very likely that DCS 2020 will be postponed or cancelled for August.
Besides the health and safety of DCS attendees, there are also significant financial obligations tied to contract signings.

As we find out more, we will try to communicate more, once all the details have been considered, within the larger plan.
It’s not an easy task, but we will endeavor to persevere, in the best interest of our DCS VIPs, Staff and Event Attendees.

Stay Safe and Healthy, and we hope to see many of you at DCS 2020. Time will tell, when or if, DCS 2020 will happen.

Thanks,
Rich W.

There are events that will need to be considered for DCS to postpone (long term) in 2020 or 2021.

Unless changed or cancelled, the DMCH Open House is October 16-18, 2020. DCS 2020 will not conflict.

EuroFest is May 27-30, 2021. There will not be a DCS initiated event that will conflict with EuroFest 2021.

There is a different effort for the 40th Anniversary of the DeLorean in the US (not using the DCS formula)
which would take place in Michigan and in conjunction with the Woodward Dream Cruise 2021, but this
event is still in the early planning stages and requires a lot of coordination with DeLorean Michigan Club.

DCS 2022 is dependent on how or if DCS 2020 takes place, although there is a short list for the location,
including Wisconsin Dells area, the Cedar Point area in Ohio or the Dayton Convention Center in Ohio.

DeLorean owners, fans and enthusiasts,

May 1st is upon us, and although much of the U.S. is still on "stay at home" or "shutdown", many of us
want to know if there will be a DCS 2020 this year (or something similar) to distract us from COVID-19.
While it would be easier to just throw in the towel for 2020, the DCS Planning Team decided to look at
a variety of options, and eventually settling on an idea the team will pursue for the Summer of 2020.

With so much uncertainty of when we can get back to normal (or a new normal), the DCS 2020 Planning Team
began looking at our possible options over the past two months, and the team has something to report.
As of today, travel restrictions are still in place internationally and future changes are up in the air.
Air travel is still limited (by number of flights available) and that will improve this month, with masks.

Federal and State COVID-19 Guidelines have been refined into Phases, but it is unclear when any specific
part of the U.S. will be in Phase I, II or III, over the next several months, so attempting to plan any
large event between now and Summer (or Fall) has become more of a guessing game than anything else. With
all of this in mind, the team has decided to replace the in-person DCS 2020 with a Virtual DCS 2020.

Virtual DCS 2020 will be unique, but it will also follow much of the same structure as an in-person DCS,
including "breakout room" presentations (with interactive Q&A after each session), either concurrently
or sequentially (may be dependent on bandwidth), as well as large group presentations or movie screenings,
which would also provide a mechanism for interactive Q&A after each presentation or movie screening).

One of the primary goals would be to have a group of VIP Guests gather at a central location, where the
presentations could be filmed and broadcast live (with a group chat tool like Microsoft Teams or Zoom),
most likely a hotel/convention center, where we could still adhere to the recommended small group details
of the Phases, while also filming/broadcasting with 3-chip cameras and plenty of Internet bandwidth.

There will also be a Virtual Car Show, which may be in two parts: Part 1 (Recorded) and Part 2 (Live).
The "Recorded" part of the Car Show would pre-recorded 1-minute video clips of each DeLorean owner's car,
which will be compiled into Part 1 of the Car Show. The "Live" part of the Car Show would show DeLorean
cars from a central location, where a group of owners would be able to meet, to show off their vehicles.

As for "Attending" the Virtual DCS 2020 event, we are considering two options: (1) Paid Invitation Option,
using a product like Microsoft Teams or Zoom Enterprise (with proper Security settings), which would be an
all-inclusive package, for interactive Q&A sessions and movie screening, and (2) Partial View Free Option
which would provide a lower resolution view of selected presentations, no Q&A and no movie screenings.

The team has been working with a few companies with the expertise fo putting on large, virtual events and
companies that can provide additional (mobile) Internet bandwidth, to a central location based event, and
although we do not have all the quotes in yet, we are expecting detailed quotes this month. Depending on
how things go during the month of May, we hope to announce a Go or No Go for Virtual DCS 2020 by June 1.

So, if you were hoping that the DCS Planning Team would be able to pull off a DCS 2020, you may be right,
at least virtually right. We are still planning to have the event during the week of August 10-16, 2020,
but we do not have all the specific dates "locked in" yet, since our most cost effective option would be
to move the entire convention to weekdays, as to not pay "time and a half" for weekend camera-man rates.

Keep checking back to this posting thread, for more details over the upcoming weeks. If the Planning Team
can make this happen, this Summer and within budget, we hope to bring your DeLorean "fix" for 2020.

Stay Safe and Healthy, and we hope to "see" many of you at Virtual-DCS 2020.

Thanks,
Rich W.

Thanks for the update, Rich! I think you're making a wise decision.

Hosting costs permitting, would it be possible to archive the footage of the sessions and make it available to paid "attendees" afterwards, for those of us who might not be able to view in real time due to work?

DaraSue and others,

Yes, instead of volunteer interns, were are currently quoting “contractors” for camera-persons and archiving
of all the presentations and Q&A sessions, but not the movie screenings (such as Jordan Livingston’s movie),
but Jordan should have his movie available for purchase after preview screenings and a later festival debut.
The content may or may not be edited down, depending on time that may or may not be available to edit it.

The Virtual-DCS 2020 Event would be more similar to a DMC Webinar than a weekend evening chat room,
with VIP Guests from DeLorean History, as well as cast and crew from BTTF History on Trilogy anniversaries
for BTTF (35 years) and for BTTF III (30 years), and, of course, DeLorean owners talking about their cars.
We hope to have two to three dozen VIPs, with many of them with travel, hotel room and meal expenses.

The COVID-19 Crisis has taught us some very important lessons, including not to put off things until next
year or next time, and that everyone’s time is limited, so we should do what we can, when we can, with no
regrets, because you may not get a “next time” to experience these type of events as a participant. I know
I have always regretted not asking JZD a few more questions at DCS 2000, when I spoke to him in person.

While a Virtual-DCS 2020 would not be like other previous DCS Events, it may actually be easier to ask the
VIP Guests your questions, either directly or semi-anonymously, during the post-presentation Q&A sessions.
Just as we could not have predicted we would have a pandemic in 2020, it would be just as difficult to be
able who may or may not be available for DCS 2022 or later, including several people committing to 2020.

If the DCS Planning Team was asked at DCS 2016 or DCS 2018, if there was a chance of having Zachary
DeLorean attend a future DCS Event, the best we could guess is 50/50, even if we had the best of luck.
However, after Tamir’s documentary was released in 2019, our chances improved to at least 90% chance
of a Yes answer. Even through COVID-19 Crisis, we still have a 90% chance Zach will participate in 2020.

This is still a work-in-progress, but the DCS Planning Team will do it’s best to make this event happen.

More details to follow.

Thanks,
Rich W.

Well, it’s June 1st, and instead of things getting better, some things have gotten worse.

I will elaborate later, but, in short, for a variety of reasons, DCS 2020 has been cancelled.

Sorry to disappoint DeLorean owners, fans and enthusiasts, but there are just too many
reasons conspiring against having a regular (in-person) DCS Event or a Virtual DCS Event
this year. The DCS Planning Team hopes to report additional details at a later time.

Thanks for all your hard work on this, Rich. It's a bummer that things didn't work out this year but with so much turbulence and uncertainty in the world, the health and safety (physically and financially) of you, your team and the community is more important than any convention. I hope we'll all get to see each other again in better times.

Thanks Rich, would have loved to have a DCS this year had things been “normal” but obviously that’s not the case. I think all of us understand why it just won’t work this year. Hope it can happen another time!

If you waited too long to attend DCS, you may need to make your own event. Good Luck with DLG.

I am excited to finally be planning to attend a DCS.
