Very exciting! Congratulations! I really enjoyed the clips you shared at DCS, it certainly left me wanting more.

Please keep us posted on when and where those unable to see it at a festival or theater can view it. I'll be checking your XYZ Films site (http://xyzfilms.com/films/untitled-john-delorean-documentary/) for links to buy.

Yes. Will be in Theaters and On Demand June 7th! :)Nice and thank you very much! Btw, I still have one of your business cards that you gave me back in the year 2000 at the rock and roll Hall of fame when John DeLorean was there for the DCS car show. We talk for a few minutes and it was definitely a pleasure meeting you and I bought my DeLorean just 5 years later and fully restored it myself! Definitely looking forward to seeing this film as its been long overdue!

Great news! It was thanks to Tamir giving me JZD’s address in the late 1990’s that I was able to write him a letter and have him autograph a Proto-1 postcard for me, long before I owned VIN 1880. Thanks again for helping me contact him, Tamir!

Was that Zachary DeLorean in the beginning? I have wondered what became of him. I don't believe I have seen or heard anything from him before unlike Kathryn

+1 on Morena Baccarin... thought she was great as Anna in the 'V' redo from about ten years ago, and she's well worth the price of admission for her part in the 1st couple seasons of Homeland. Alec Baldwin's body of work ain't so bad either!

Any thoughts on if this is going to print to 4K UHD Bluray or are you going to stick to normal Bluray?

Yes, that is John's son Zach. He is much more private than Kathryn. I've been fortunate enough to have known him for 14 years and can call him a friend. His participation in the film helped elevate it greatly.

DPI Josh mentioned in another thread recently about people's choice to enjoy their cars privately and to not be involved in the car community at all. I can only imagine how overwhelming it could get for John's son if not comfortable in the spotlight. Glad to hear you're friends with him. Would that 14 years coincide approximately with JZD's passing?

What do you mean by "on Demand" Tamir? like DVD/Bluray? also is it exclusive to U.S cinemas or will we get it over here in the UK?
btw saw the trailer this morning and looks amazing, Alec Baldwin was a surprise to be sure but a welcome one cant wait to see it

The release in the US will be at both select Theaters in major markets as well on Demand. Think Apple iTunes / Amazon or VOD services on cable where you can rent or buy something.

The international release plan through Universal Studios will be determined shortly, but the current plan is to also be releasing on June 7th in international territories.

Yes, that is the one I am talking about. So we have Framing John DeLorean on June 7, 2019. I wonder when Driven gets a wider release. It hit the festival circuit in the Fall of 2018, and there hasn't been much else about it since.

DRIVEN had its festival premiere last year, but nothing has been publicly announced in regards to that film's release. I'll remind everyone that DRIVEN is a highly fictionalized narrative film that loosely utilizes the DeLorean drug bust by telling a story from the point of view of Jim Hoffman, who was the criminal informant that introduced John to the drug deal.

My film on the other hand is a deep dive into a multi-faced and complicated man using many different story telling techniques that compliment the ability to uncover John's true story. I look forward to the DMC community and those outside of it to see it soon!

hi Tamir,

I can't wait to see your movie, congrats again!

The scene where JZD (Baldwin) is unveiling Proto-1 looks amazing - seems you really captured what it must have been like during those early days of the company. I love how the cover gets pulled back and the doors open, it really looked amazing! But, how did you do it? I'm sure you didn't have door launchers fitted to Proto-1!

Thanks,
John

Tamir A.
03-12-2019, 05:17 PM
Thanks John!

Yeah, painstaking detail was put into every narrative scene to try and capture as close to the period correct setting we could. I incorporated a lot of actual historical items in the scenes using items from my collection of DeLorean memorabilia, as well as items that were loaned by John's family members for the shoot. For instance, Alec wears John's actual Cartier watch throughout the scenes, and for John's NY office scene there are many historical items such as the wooden DeLorean that sat on his real desk.

For the ballroom scene you mentioned, since it is set in 1976, obviously getting the actual Proto-1 was key. Many thanks to Tony Ierardi for his instrumental help with that, as well as the current owner of the car. Correct, Proto-1 does not have door launchers. We were able to achieve the synchronized door pop by having two people crammed as low as they could get in the footwells and timed the opening of the doors perfectly. Luckily with the camera angle the car appears to be empty, and it only took about 3 takes to get the perfect reveal. :)

Actually he did punch the guy and plead guilty to it. This was the second time in NYC. He has a reputation of losing his temper. As for good behavior, remember, he is an actor. Obviously a good one to get to where he is, at the top of his profession.

Alec doesn't need me to defend him, but you are false. He did plead the issue out, like most folks end up doing in court. But it wasn't a punch, that part was mischaracterized in reports. And yes, he's a good actor, one of many we have in the film.

I was saying on the other board that no matter what his politics or his personal life, we are pretty lucky that Mr. Baldwin is staring in this project (I'm sure in no small part to your efforts). Having such a well known and respected name attached to the leading role will only serve to it's (and our) benefit.

It could not be proven there was a punch thrown but AB admitted to "harassment". In any case AB plead guilty to the charges and is supposed to take anger management courses. Nice guy. In his defense there are some people that go out of their way to get celebrities into trouble but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

DRIVEN looks more like it is trying to be a light-hearted version of the real story like American Made with a lot of extra stuff thrown in that never happened. Setting it through the informant's point of view was an interesting idea. I cannot say what I think of most informants I've worked with, but I will say they all have many of the same motivations of why they do it. Biggest factors being money and/or to work off their own criminal cases. Do you address any of this in your film with respect to Hoffman?

Couldn't agree more. It was a big win to get a talented actor like Alec Baldwin to play John. And when you factor in Alec's personal connection to the real John DeLorean, it adds a whole other layer of coolness to it.

It is a small moment of discovery within the film. Alec mentioned it in an article already so the cat is a bit out of the bag on this. Essentially John cold called Alec a few months before he passed away to ask him to portray him in a feature film that John was working on trying to get made about his life with a producer at the time. It is a pretty crazy story, and lends an extra layer of credibility to having Alec play this role since the real John DeLorean wanted it that way. Wild right?!

Alec talked about that in the trailer and I have to admit I was lost as I had never heard about JZD even mentioning anyone playing him in a movie. I wasn't even aware there was a movie idea in the works when he was alive. It just adds more intrigue to the story.

They finally released the schedule, the film is supposed to be shown 4/30, 5/1 and 5/2. For details and tickets go to the Tribeca film festival website. Will there be any requests for Deloreans to be parked outside the theaters?

Hi All,

In all honesty, I really need the DeLorean community in the NY and NY adjacent areas to come out for the opening weekend of the film on 6/7 in NYC. That will set the course for the theatrical release in all other major markets across the US for the weekend of 6/14 and onward. This film is AMAZING to watch on the big screen in a theatrical setting. So while it will be great to have folks come to the Tribeca screenings, I'd really call for everyone to hold out till the general release on 6/7 so we can pack the theaters, or see it both at Tribeca and on opening weekend. :)

And yes, I'll be calling on favors to get folks and their cars out to theaters, so please PM me if that is something you'd be open to helping with. As usual, the DeLorean community is very tight and helpful, and I truly appreciate it!

Not likely for the big chains mentioned. Think more art house theaters in major markets, possibly some Landmark theaters, etc. I'll make sure to post a list of all theaters and cities, etc so everyone knows their options.

It would be great if it could play at the Traverse City Film Fest, which runs late July, early August:

TCFF screens a wide variety of films and I'm sure a few of us could help if they wanted to do something extra. I haven't been for a few years and it would make the perfect excuse to return :)

Tamir... Which studio is handling the bookings for this? I own a drive-in theatre just outside of Nashville, Tennessee and curious to what the terms would be for the film.

I was actually at this festival last year visiting friends in TC. It is a great festival. Unlikely we'd play there since the film will already be released. But if there is an opportunity to do so, I'll definitely try for it as I love having an excuse to visit TC.

It would be great if it could play at the Traverse City Film Fest, which runs late July, early August:

https://www.traversecityfilmfest.org/

TCFF screens a wide variety of films and I'm sure a few of us could help if they wanted to do something extra. I haven't been for a few years and it would make the perfect excuse to return :)

Tamir, any plans for a screening in Belfast?

I remember walking past you guys while you were interviewing Barrie in the Transport Museum!

Tickets for Tribeca are on sale now, just got mine online here: https://www.tribecafilm.com/filmguide/framing-john-delorean-2019

(The system must be pretty bogged down b/c it took about half an hour for them to arrive by email rather than the 5 minutes it said to expect.)

Hope I'll see some of you there!

Tamir,

Any plans for something similar to this for the Los Angeles market? I know participation would be huge here.

Yes, will put out details soon, but the film will be opening in LA at a great theater the weekend of 6/14, and I will be on hand for Q&A's, along with other folks from the movie. Would be amazing to get great turnouts from DeLorean owners and fans. More to come soon! :)

I believe so, working on release details with my international distributor Universal on this. Will report back with specifics when I have them.

Hi Tamir, I'm also interested in details on any potential opening in the Orlando metro area. If so, we will definitely coordinate a group of cars for it.

Tamir,
Quick Question - I'm talking with a local DeLorean Owner who owns a Drive-In. If we wanted to get a copy of the film for a private screening, how much would it cost and how do we go about it? This might be best suited for a PM

For Chicago area folks that haven't heard, we will be getting a screening on June 19, 2019 at Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove, IL. Classic single screen venue built in 1928.

Baldwin was on the Tonight Show the other day and mentioned the movie. He talked about studying footage of JZD to be able to play him and how he had this 'bouquet of tics and sudden movements.' Is this accurate? I had never heard this about JZD before.

Although Alec exaggerates the movements, I have noticed them as part of JZD's demeanor.

In this interview, Alec moves like the animated waiters/characters on the TV screen on the Cafe 80's in BTTF 2. LOL

Watch videos of JZD online. Yes, he had some facial tics.

As Alec mentioned in the interview, and is made clear on the trailer; Alec is playing himself- playing John DeLorean.

In Hillel Levin's Grand Delusions on page 238 filmmaker Don Pennebaker said of JZD, "He was so tight he twitched." Levin claims he would constantly adjust his head, cricking it back and forth and side to side.

I figured he was over-acting for the benefit of the audience, just didn't realize what it was based on.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions about actors and those in the public light. But I can tell you that from working with Alec on this film, he put a lot of energy and time into learning about John and the story and wanting to play the role as authentically as possible. And for those who haven't read all of the stories on this thread or in the news, John DeLorean personally asked Alec to portray him in a feature film shortly before he died. You can't deny that it is an amazing sequence of events that led Alec into this role, one endorsed by the automotive legend himself.

Whatever his personal beliefs, to have Alec Baldwin as the star is nothing short of a blessing. He is quite a talented man and it sounds like in the interview that he took that role very seriously.

And how are we not talking about the interview itself? This doc just got plugged on a major network television show...quite possibly the largest late night viewing audience in the world just heard about "Framing John DeLorean" and for several minutes to boot.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome how Alec is excited to help push the film's awareness. As it gets closer to the actual release weekend in June, he will be doing a few appearances on national shows, and some of the other well known actors will be doing press to help the exposure of the film.

If anyone didn't catch it two weeks ago, Alec was on Howard Stern and the film was discussed a bunch. Here is a collection of the sections pertaining to the film:

Hi Tamir,

I really can't wait to see this!

I guess this will make more sense when I actually see your movie, but I confess I don't really understand why it is in the style of Alec playing himself playing JZD - I think I read somewhere that it is a documentary about how hard it is to make a movie about John DeLorean? Not a criticism at all, just trying to understand the style you have gone for with this, and to ask you if you have any plans for a full feature length movie someday, featuring Alec Baldwin again playing the role?

Thanks!
John

Hey John,

All good questions. It is a bit unconventional the approach we took in making this documentary, but we believe all the creative pieces help highlight DeLorean's story as well as help propel the main focus of the film and question we pose, which is - who was John DeLorean, and did anyone ever really know him?

To clarify, Alec plays John DeLorean like any actor would play another real life character during the re-enactment narrative scenes. But unlike other films, we also film Alec as documentarians behind the scenes preparing for the role as a way to also push the story forward. Those elements you see a little of in the trailer where you see Alec behind the scenes commenting or questioning things about DeLorean's story, in this breaking the fourth wall scenario.

The film starts by posing the question of why a film has never been made, considering it is a story that Hollywood has been circling for over 35 years. And back in 2009 when there were four competing films with various filmmakers (myself one of them), each with their own intellectual property attached to their project, and various family members attached to each project, why couldn't anyone get a film over the hump? And why did each film have it's own "version" of who John DeLorean really was by those who knew him best? That is the launching off pad for the film, and it structures it in a way that helps us "frame" John's story.

Many may have seen the announcement from Clooney two days ago regarding his intention to do a DeLorean film. Will it really happen....time will tell. This of course has been in the rumor mill for over 10 years, and so even with my documentary hybrid film being released in June and the yet to be released highly fictionalized comedy/drama DRIVEN, the fascination with John DeLorean as a film or TV character is still very strong. I do have another project in the works for DeLorean, but can't comment further at this time.

For now, I look forward to everyone watching FRAMING JOHN DELOREAN, which was years and years in the making, and should hopefully shed some new information to hard core DeLorean fans through never before seen archival film and still images I have unearthed, first time interviews, beautiful 4K transferred footage from the Pennebaker and Hegedus 1981 documentary film, all wrapped in with cinematically shot narrative scenes with A list actors. :)

Best,
Tamir

I should imagine it will take a little while for this to find its way to the UK, but I did speak with a local 'semi-independent' cinema who were aware of the film but had no details of the UK release date.

Regardless I was surprised that they had heard of it so I thought that was quite positive.

Does anybody want my ticket for tonight's screening at the Regal by Battery Park? I went last night and it was really good and I'd go again but I'm totally exhausted. PM me with your email if interested (or if you know someplace in NYC where I can nap in my car and not pay $50 to paek, LOL)

Now that I've had a few hours to rest I guess I should talk about the movie. I really enjoyed it, I thought they did a good job portraying both the positive and negative aspects of JZD's character. The segments with Zach and Kathryn veered from hilarious to heartbreaking. All in all it was really compelling even if you're familiar with the story and a good encapsulation of what really happened for people who don't know the real story.

The show last night was sold out, hopefully that's a good sign for its success! Looking forward to the 9-hour producer's cut
