Got an offer to sell my Delorean today.

Still haven't gotten it titled and a guy rings my bell asking if I wanted to sell her.

I offered him a shot at my Plymouth Prowler but he says he only like non American cars.

I get this on a semi regular basis in Houston. Hispanic guys especially will pull out and shout out "How much?" Not, hi how are you, nice car....etc... Just the immediate belief that I'm going to throw them a number that they can't resist and they'll drive away with a Delorean. LOL....

Now, having said that, my car is ALWAYS for sale. Getting to the price should be diplomatic however. I also won't sell it to someone who I believe will not be able to properly look after it. I have a respect for the work that I and others have put into it and don't want it to simply be used, abused and forgotten. In its own small way it is a piece of history, despite simply being a car.

As others have touched on these questions are never serious. I have had them too. Complete stranger and two words "how much". Any one that that walks up to a stranger like that this is pretty much an asshat and the goal is to cease conversation ASAP. I used to respond with the high number but that gives the asshat a launching pad to dive deeper into a conversation that I don't want to have. "What 80k? I know a friend with one who...." These days I just say it's not for sale, If they pursue it further, I turn into a bigger dick than they are and just ask them to leave me alone.

No it's not a conversation starter unless you enjoy conversing with a donkey. The question is akin to "How much is it worth?" It's an obnoxious question that seems kosher only to those with no tact or manners. It doesn't upset me after I answer it's not for sale...any further statement to the matter is rude and unwanted.

It’s a poor conversation starter.
“Nice car,” “Hi, what year is that?” “Wow, I’ve never seen a Delorean in person before” are conversation starters. Even a Flux Capacitor comment is a conversation starter. To walk up and the first words out of their mouth to be “How much” is annoying to no end.

You take your Delorean out in public and you have to put up with other people's behavior. If you don't like the attention get something less conspicuous. David, you a wrong on this. It is outside of your "expertise" as "guru" to us lesser Delorean owners. It is rude. It has been made acceptable because of the loss of civility brought on by so many cultural changes that I won't go into. Give up.

That said(albeit longwinded), the "How Much" guy is not the same as the "Is it by any chance for sale" guy. The "How Much" guy is just a plain arrogant self centered jackass on so many levels.

I can accept the "How much" from some people, some people just aren't educated or are as much off guard when they ask as we are when asked. I think if they had a chance to really think it through they might ask in a different way.

People that covet nice or rare cars know what to ask and how to ask, they've been down the road a time or two and may have bought and sold a few on their own.

So far I don't get bent out of shape over a "How much" as it is their tactless way of starting a conversation, I can't read minds yet so I don't know if a person is being a dickwad or just at a loss for the appropriate words.

If I ever get the distinct impression someone's being a jerk off I have no problem cutting them off at the pass.

No joke... My wife and I were having dinner 2 nights ago and came out of the restaurant to a guy sitting in his truck next to my car. He introduced himself as a car dealer and wanted to know if I'd sell it. I'm pretty sure he had been waiting, not sure how long, just to talk to me. I told him there's always a few available on eBay etc... His response, "I'm looking for a cheap one." I told him that this one isn't one of those...

Steve tell'em Beverly hills car club is > that way. As time goes on the value of these cars and many other sought after 70s and 80s cars will continue to rise. Just because shit boy I could of had one of these for 12 k 15 years ago thinks that's how it is , no times change. I was going to buy a Pantera before my delorean as they were both cars I love. I settled on the D as it's my all time favorite car, and truth be told the value of a Pantera has doubled in 4 years. That's just how the car market goes and some people can't grasp this. Esp with low volume produced cars like ours

When I told him it wasn't for sale, he informed me that he would be buying my car, and he had cash in his car to do it (apparently I had no say on the matter). He kinda got in my face and repeatedly asked "how much, how much?" trying to intimidate me. When he went back to his rather "fast & furious" ride and started fumbling around inside it, I just left.

I get the excitement of seeing these cars makes some folks momentarily lose their common decency, but some people really are just asshats about it.

Had a similar experience. Some guy in his late 20's pulled into the gas station in a souped up Honda Civic and fanned a stack of $100 bills in my face, then got offended when I told him I'm not interested.

Almost that same exact thing happened to me, but with my R2-D2. It was opening day of The Force Awakens, and I was controlling R2 from behind a counter to keep the controller out of sight, but eventually this guy investigated enough to find out who was controlling the robot. He first asked if he could "Test Drive" it. I told him it was about 2 hundred pounds and there a children all around it, so I can not allow anyone other then myself to operate it. Then he informed me that he was going to buy it. I told him it was not for sale, he told me he was gonna talk to the manager of the theater. (Maybe he thought I was just an employee of the theater tasked with operating the droid) I told him it didn't belong to the theater and that I was volunteering my time to do the appearance. He went into the whole "everything is for sale" which I guess is a way of saying that "well sure, if you get an outrageous offer then sure,.. maybe it is" I really wasn't too bothered with him at this point, I was a bit amused really, but then he turned into a major dick at that point, and I told him I'd rather burn it to the ground then sell it to him.

I agree that everything has a price, but don't get upset with me when I state my price.

Also I never pull a stupid number out of my ass, I always know going in what I'd part with this or that for.

For example, I just got Delorean, I ve yet to drive her, if someone offered me 50K I'd turn it down even though the street value of my car is around 35-40K. I'd turn down 70K but at least they'd be getting warm. For 75-80K we'd have a serious conversation.

Now talk to me a few years fro now and I'll be willing to have that sit down with you at 35K(assuming values don't climb) and negotiate from there.

It's all relative and certain things are assumed, I could find myself in the need for some quick cash one day and be forced to take a low ball offer (I doubt it).

My car's PO and I were literally signing the bill of sale when a "ricer" passed on the road in a stanced Civic, did a huey and offered the PO 3 grand more on the spot for the car. Thankfully the PO recognized that I was going to look after it properlyand not "stance" it or whatever this guys plans for it were, and didn't renege on the deal.
