Excited to see this movie. I'm curious where in Detroit the filming are. I grew up in SE MI and went to high school with JZD's lawyer's son. They lived in one of Delorean's houses on Lone Pine Hill.

For the folks attending the Ann Arbor screening tomorrow. I look forward to seeing all of you there. Totally up to you if you want to bring your cars or not. The setup for the theater makes it difficult to ensure parking for multiple DMC's out front. I only have one reserved space being held for Shannon's car. But if luck has it and you can score spots out front at the meters that would be awesome and make for some fun pictures.

Either way, will be a fun event.

Thanks Shannon! Was a really fun night last night, appreciate all the DMC folks that came out. The cars looked AMAZING. I kept bragging to folks about your car Shannon and everyone was wowed that you have over 200K miles on it! My directors who couldn't make it loved seeing the pics and hearing about the positive feedback.

I look forward to seeing any other owners or fans at the Bloomfield screening on Tuesday.

Hi All.

Opening weekend is June 7th. It will play exclusively in New York the opening weekend at the IFC Center. If we can pack those screenings it would be amazing and help increase the national rollout. Please spread the word to all of your friends and through social media, etc. Below is a link to purchase tickets. The first two nights (6/6 and 6/7) will have special screenings with Q&A's by the directors, myself, and Alec Baldwin.

National rollout to other major cities begins June 14th. Please check here for cities near you: https://www.framingjohndeloreanfilm.com/tickets/ (additional theaters will be added over the next few weeks, so check back often)

Excited for everyone to be able to see the film soon!

Tamir,

How has turnout been so far at these screenings, given the limited locations and mid-week screening days? I’d love to see it on the big screen, but I’m limited to weekends since, the locations are likely to be a substantial travel distance for me.

How is it being promoted in those early screening markets, (TV, News, Radio, Internet) commercials?

Congrats on the excellent reception the film is getting in the press, Tamir!

If this is the correct place to share some of that press coverage here is a description of the film and his role in it as told to National Public Radio by Alec Baldwin, carried in their Morning Edition broadcast today:

https://www.npr.org/2019/06/04/728003717/as-john-delorean-alec-baldwin-revisits-the-past-of-a-car-made-for-the-future

The 7-minute interview isn't fully transcribed in NPR's online posting. Also, the posting has segments in it that aren't in the audio story so I recommend both listening to the interview and reading the posting.

As John DeLorean, Alec Baldwin Revisits The Past Of A Car Made For The Future

"But listen, stylistically the car's a beautiful car. It was ahead of its time. To me, the important thing is what might have been. Whether DMC [DeLorean Motor Company] worked or not, I think John could have played an important part in American automobile manufacturing until all this went wrong."

NPR doesn't carry very many stories like this - so I consider this a great sign that there will be wide interest in the film.

Congrats again to Tamir and the team that made this film.

‘Framing John DeLorean’ Review: The Man Who Flew His Car Too Close to the Sun

Bill Collins is a DMC-12 owner and he has been an owner for a number of years. You are correct that Bill
did not want to own a DMC-12 for nearly 3 decades after his work on the prototype. Bill has been a bit
private about his DeLorean ownership, but since his car was seen in one part of his interview in the movie,
it is not meant to be a secret. When a Bill bought a DeLorean, he was very about specific what he wanted.

Just saw the film. Gotta say it's really a great movie that tries to be as honest and unbiased as possible. Save for Hillel Levin who always comes across as having a bone to pick with JZD.

I really appreciated Zach who wasn't just candid, but genuine in his request about wanting an honest portrayal of his father instead of a rosy one. Plus the guy talks the same way I do. Can't go wrong with the colorful metaphors.

It's damn hard to really capture the full story in a single movie, because after all like the marque, it's divided into 3 sections; the man, the company, and the car. But I feel as though it did one helluva job staying on course. Only 2 things I would possibly question about the movie would be the story of GPD, and Proto-1. DeLorean wouldn't have gotten a full 50% cut of the GPD funds with Chapman, nor was it all setup by JZD and Chapman. Although getting into corporate history would have taken away from the story since the focus is intended instead to be about the man himself. Let alone the concern about getting into the story of Juhan family, and how they may have reacted to any representation in the film. As for Proto-1, Lotus to my understanding was not used simply as a way to siphon funding from DMC. Rather Lotus became involved when Proto-1 was realized to have had substandard crash worthiness and the engineering on the car had to be restarted from the ground-up. Hence the outsourcing of engineering (starting with an inquiry to Porsche who may have tipped-off Juhan). Perhaps this was omitted as a respect to Bill Collins though.

I positively loved the little easter eggs in the film. Like the "Business Today" case module in JZD's briefcase, and the custom DeLorean sunglasses he wore.

There's still quite a few things left out that either influenced his life (I think the Palm Springs story is very telling in explaining why he became the way he was), or were major milestones, but I'm happy that the film got down to the focus on JZD & DMC. That's what I really wanted to see. I feel that it's a great film that has done the marque, and the man justice by being as honest as possible without glossing over nor condemning. I have no qualms in recommending this film to anyone wanting to know more about the man, and don't feel as though I need to give a disclaimer like you do with some of the books written about him.

This is both the movie that I wanted to see, and the movie that the rest of the public needed.

I watched the film last night via iTunes and thought all involved did a great job. It brought back a lot of memories of me corresponding with JZD as a middle school kid and the excitement I had when he sent me an autograph, and later on attending his wake and meeting Tamir there.

One thing that confused me was how it paints a somewhat depressing picture of JZD dying alone in a one bedroom apartment at the end of his life trying to start a company again. I think it would have been worth mentioning that he remarried (to Sally) and became a father again at age 78. I think that’s an interesting tidbit and shows how JZD moved on with his life. Just my two cents.

Ken K. supplied the car for the Zach interview.

Rob Grady supplied the car for some of the close-ups with Alec as JZD.

Of course, Proto 1 got plenty of screen time in key scenes of the movie.

The big reveal of Proto 1 was accomplished with a lot of low tech help.
(for example, the BTTF II scene with Marty's power laces comes to mind)

Bill Collins explains is preferences and reasons for his DeLorean specs best,
so we will see if he makes it out to an upcoming event to explain in person,
but no DeLoreans left the factory with the exact specs as Bill's DeLorean.
(all factory spec parts, but not all available at the same time, at factory)

Hopefully, if all goes well, the movie Framing John DeLorean is just the beginning of Tamir's DeLorean story telling.

As mentioned by Alec in a few interviews, there are other DeLorean projects in the works, and Tamir can confirm,
but I think most folks want to "enjoy the moment" and focus on the movie and its stories, at least for now.

As for Hillel, there is some compelling evidence regarding his side of the story. I spoke extensively to Hillel in 2018
before inviting him to DCS 2018, and many of the DCS 2018 attendees (after Friday dinner) heard his evidence too.

Stay tuned ... more to follow.

Some good thoughts here. And as my directors often joke, they say I would've had an 8 hour cut if I had my way. ;)

Yeah, we had to make certain creative decisions, most of them consisting of omitting rather than changing certain facts as we needed to keep under two hours and stay the course of what we were trying to analyze, which was John's character, etc.

I must say though, I believe folks will be very interested in some of the bonus features when they are released, as they add even more insight into some crazy aspects to John's story and those involved in his story. So more fun things to come in the next few months. :)

Glad you enjoyed the film, I tried very hard to do the DMC community right.

Best,

I watched it last night with my wife and was going to write a review but I can't top Robert's post so I will just add this.

My wife likes my car but never cared about the history and honestly she is just not into DeLoreans either....She was mesmerized.

That was my biggest takeaway. If it can captivate my wife then this will appeal to pretty much anyone with even minimal interest in the story.

She fuckin loved it

Yeah, as Rich has alluded to, there is a lot of intrigue to Hillel's history with JZD. I can tell you we were very careful with making sure personal bias didn't leak into the story points. But there is no doubting Hillel uncovered some very unsavory aspects to JZD's business dealings well before the drug bust, and through this and some unreal things that occurred after the drug bust to Hillel, that his story is quite compelling in it's own right. Which will be revealed in more detail in some bonus scenes.

T.

Totally agree with Robert and Michael.

I'm half way through it via iTunes Movie rentals (thanks to my little 14 month old) and so far it's wonderful. The pacing, story and editing is truly captivating and like Michael, I'm watching with my wife and she's also mesmerized. Can't wait to finish it later tonight when the wee one is in bed.

Outstanding stuff Tamir and you're a very engaging on-screen storyteller.

Cheers!

The cat now knows more than most of the people that approach me.

Also I know it is too soon to talk about sales but when the time comes I hope there is a "Tamir cut" of the movie available with all of the scenes that were cut...at the very least, all of the reenactments included.

Great news actually, the blu-ray was approved for a limited run (very rare these days for films of this size). I'm going to be coordinating it, and will ensure there are a TON of goodies in there, including what you just mentioned below. :)

I watched it (rental) between yesterday and today. I thought it was great. I would definitely like to see more of the trial in the movie. For all the surveillance leading up to the trial portion it went by in the blink of an eye. Guess I am just curious how they won over the jury. If anything the surveillance definitely shows they were preying on John's situation to say the least.

I liked just about everything in the film. But, yeah, it was a bit weird ending it like John was living in solace if he was married.

As for Hillel, there is some compelling evidence regarding his side of the story. I spoke extensively to Hillel in 2018
before inviting him to DCS 2018, and many of the DCS 2018 attendees (after Friday dinner) heard his evidence too.

I've no doubt that Hillel uncovered some things. Some business dealings that I, myself, wouldn't hesitate to call repugnant. Both prior to DMC, as well as post DMC. The sale of LMC and the final lawsuits over it come to mind. And we're not even counting the missing vehicles that had forged manufacturer's certificates of origin and were illegally sold.

Having said that, I've no qualm with the facts. Facts are facts, and I don't believe they should be downplayed as that itself is a kind of bias. They should absolutely be presented at face value and explained and expanded upon for better understanding and interpretation so as to become teaching tools for the future. Don't candy coat things, but also don't omit them.

What I take exception with is how Hillel seems to consistently present these facts in a manner which makes it seem as though John De Lorean was the sole architect, perpetrator, and beneficiary of those schemes. That is wrong. JZD had plenty of the literal "partners in crime" who helped draft, execute, and profit from all those illicit dealings. There were lots of hands involved, but in the end it was only John who got caught with his in the proverbial cookie jar. That's really what my beef is. If we're going to talk about the fraud, the bad guys, and other things, there are a whole lot of other names that should be included. Granted this is a movie about JZD, not those others, but at the very least the existence of other accomplices should be acknowledged.

Best,
T.

When the Blu-ray is released, I'll absolutely be buying a copy. I get that you've got a whole lot of material to work in, and I'd say that you and everyone did an amazing job with the end result. Now I'm not going to try and brownnose or anything like that. I've got nothing to gain from it. But I will be honest in telling you that this is one damn fine movie. The curation of the facts, the presentation of them, and the satisfaction of how it all turned out. This is one of those rare documentaries, particularly one with dramatization, that I not only have absolutely no hesitation in recommending, but don't feel the need to give any corrective disclaimers on. I can't speak for everyone, but I do genuinely feel that you did good by the community. A big thanks to you, and everyone involved.

I liked just about everything in the film. But, yeah, it was a bit weird ending it like John was living in solace if he was married.

I think that this is what makes the movie perfect. The fact that it left you asking questions. Not because you're not fulfilled, but because it will spark curiosity within the viewer and trigger a desire to learn more. And that's coming from a guy who will absolutely fuckin' thread-kill any conversation because I want no question left unanswered. My wife watched the movie with me, and loved it. But she had questions too. Her big question was if Bill Collins had a fully functioning prototype, why was Lotus suddenly involved? You're wondering about how JZD won his case? There are many things like that with this movie, and I think that is why it's so great. You'll have a hunger to know more, and you'll be drawn further into the history.

But if you're wanting to learn more about the trial, let's just say that the prosecution's case kept stumbling all over itself. From the botched testimony of Hoffman, to a former DEA agent's testimony (https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1984/08/01/ex-dea-agent-testifies-in-delorean-trial/869fc921-b1b6-40bb-a677-40bd7de6f2ae/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.ac781e51fdbe).

Great job on the film, Tamir. I really enjoyed it.

I, too, am someone that has ever evolving opinions of JZD. I certainly don't think he was all bad, but I definitely don't think he was some saint either. And there's no mistaking Zach's life with one of a bunch of glitz and glamour. That was some pretty raw emotion there, and real honest. If I have my limits with all the jokers at car shows and their bizarre comments and references, I can only imagine how difficult life would have been for Kathryn and Zach. Good on you for having them be a big part of the film. And thanks to them both for their willingness. They gave a personable view on the story that no one else would have been able to, and the film was made better because of it.

And on the subject of Easter Eggs... was that a Hot Wheels DeLorean on the kitchen counter during the reenactment scene of when she gets the call that John's been arrested?

We were privileged to get to watch the movie at a local theater yesterday. Afterward we got to visit with a dozen or so others who watched it with us and wanted to hang out afterward.

The movie is just terrific. It's well balanced between the technical/business side and the personal/family side with tight editing of a complicated story. Knowing what I do about the many twists and turns of the DeLorean saga I wondered what they'd need to leave out. The answer is precious little! And I learned a few new stories.

For all the stillborn attempts at making a DeLorean biopic - which the movie itself salutes - I'm glad this is the one that got released.

The docu-reenactment treatment is brilliant. Kudos to Tamir, the acting talent and the entire movie team for pulling off such an approachable and engaging movie.

We enjoyed every minute!

Fantastic film, Tamir! Clearly you have a great personal relationship with many of the characters in the story and they trust you to tell their story correctly. Zach and Bill Collins accounts were particularly poignant.

I really like the way photos were refocussed theough what I assume to be some sort of film-makers loup (no idea what that would be called)

And personally you came across very well as the story-teller, very compelling.

Great film that tells the real story with no punches pulled or sugarcoating. At first, I wasn't sure the style with the behind the scenes actors' commentaries and re-enactments would work. As the film progressed, one flowed into another with exceptional editing and added a layer to the film a normal documentary would not. As a former thespian in another life, Alec Baldwin's thought process, introspection and conclusions about DeLorean's "character" demonstrated that he really is a great actor. I think Tamir and his team have pioneered a new way to shoot documentaries, and I look forward to more projects from them.

I especially enjoyed some of the Easter eggs throughout the film. I noticed Baldwin had on the same outfit at one point that he wore when Tamir met DeLorean at his NJ estate for the first time in 1999 (tan pants, pink polo) as well as the Roy Nesseth reference early on regarding John's leaked speech about GM quality, and the aforementioned Hot Wheels car on the counter. I'm sure there are many more, which is what the Blu-Ray is for!

We also had a great Q/A as well after the film (Tivoli Theatre Downers Grove, IL) with Tamir and Hillel Levin. One of the questions in the audience had to do with the siphoning of company funds (17.65 million) into GPD, which was split between DeLorean and Colin Chapman of Lotus. This was touched on in the film, though it was never fully explained how that IRS tax case ended (DeLorean acquitted due to poor jury instructions). I knew the history, but some in the audience clearly did not. Of the many interviews cut out, was this fully explained in one them?

I know it was mentioned briefly in the Q/A if DeLorean was a sociopath. All sociopaths are narcissists, but not all narcissists are sociopaths. An easy way to remember it is that sociopaths are born, and the diagnosis is usually made in the adolescent years. Narcissists are made over time. If you look at DeLorean, he essentially remade himself over time with cosmetic surgery, his dress/hair style, marriages to starlets, his commercial image and branding of himself etc. all to bolster his ego, which happens to be quite fragile. I don't want to write an essay here of this, but for those interested read the DSM on narcissism, and you will see what I mean. Perhaps, some of our historians here can shed a bit more light into this topic as it was brought up for a few seconds at the Q/A.

Finally, my wife who is not into cars and humors me by going to shows and events, liked the film as well. Her question she was too shy to ask is what is the relationship like between Zach, Katherine, and Cristina these days? Do they all talk? She was surprised to see how Zach lives compared to his sister and wondered how he ended up there. My theory is that he has had addiction problems, and I'd imagine the family does not help him financially as a result. By the way, he was the most compelling person interviewed in the film (besides Tamir ). When he was on screen, you could sense the entire audience sitting upright or leaning forward to carefully listen to what he had to say. Very interested to hear what he thinks of the film when he sees it.

Also, please put me down for a Blu-Ray!

We were anxiously awaiting the release of the film in State College PA, but due to a family issue were unable to make it. I was wondering if anyone knew if there will be additional releases in Pennsylvania, or if we have missed our chance? The ideal situation would be if the movie came to the cinema center in Selinsgrove, and we could trailer the DeLorean in to display but maybe that is not realistic.

Harris Theater in downtown Pittsburgh has it until Thursday the 4th at least. Tough to display a car though given it's properly downtown.

Just came back from seeing the film and showing the car at the Alamo draft house in Katy, TX. Not sure how I felt about it.

I learned a bit, especially about the money laundering charges after the cocaine debacle..... No doubt in my mind that he was indeed entrapped by overzealous Feds, but he was also too smart to be 'the victim'. He knew what he was doing. Like most of the rest of the things he did in life, walking that fine line was his nature. Great engineering/marketing mind, questionable business morals at best. Ego off the charts.

I didn't realize just how screwed up his kids still are, especially his son. Not sure his constant F*bombing added anything to the movie. He needs to get on with his life and stop blaming Dad for everything.

I'm not sure who has the bigger ego, old JZD or Alec Baldwin and his personal commentaries outside of the actual role. He is pretty full of himself...... oh well, that's Hollywood.

I'm happy to announce that we have been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% critics score after 41 critic reviews. But it would be amazing if everyone who has seen the film were to help rate it with 5 stars on Rotten Tomatoes or 10 stars on IMDB - if you liked it of course ;). Tamir, I was wondering something. The official trailer on youtube is in a wide (2.39) aspect ratio. But when I saw the film in the theater, it was shown in the standard 1.85 aspect ratio (or perhaps 1.89 as stated in the Blu-ray link you shared). I thought maybe it was just a projection error, but more likely it was correct and the trailer was just letterboxed? Either way, the film rocked.

Tamir A.
07-11-2019, 04:47 PM
First off, thanks for the warm words on the film, glad you liked it. And good eye regarding the aspect ratio.

The interviews were shot in 16x9 4K on a Sony FS7. The narrative scenes were shot with an anamorphic 2.39 lens on an Alexa camera. Everything is colored differently between the interviews and the narrative scenes so that you feel the jump of going from documentary into these cinematic scenes. What makes things even harder is that a lot of the archival is 4:3 and for some shots it wasn't advantageous to crop in so we left those in the original aspect ratio with the black bars on the side.

When cutting the trailer we determined that it would be cleanest to letterbox everything with a 2.39 aspect ratio and push in on all archival so that it wasn't jarring from quick cut to cut. The Blu-Ray and DVD will reflect what is seen at the theater and on the VOD versions.

T.

Universal who is handling International unfortunately doesn't want to do a Blu Ray / DVD release. I'll continue to push now that my US Distributor is doing this US run of Blu-Rays. Or you may just have to get a region free Blu-Ray/DVD player and buy the Region A disc.

Posters aren't being sold, I think someone is illegally printing some based off of a probably low quality digital online file. So I would avoid those. The US posters have a limited print amount and a lot have been given away at events as special gifts, etc. I imagine there will be a few more scenarios to get some in the future though, so fear not. There are 3 official posters that have been made, all 3 options are below (Main Art, Archival Art, International Art):

It was a double-win being able to attend and having an uneventful round-trip drive :D Would have loved to talk longer with Bill Collins and Bob Manion.

I wish I could have shot more video during the event. I did capture a moment when the three of you are by the cars for photos. Slow pan left to show the family that was out for a bike ride.
Just a few moments before, Bob had made a comment to Bill about how strange this whole thing was. Right as he said that, this family bikes by and the younger boys spotted the cars and stopped so fast I thought they were going to go over the handlebars.

Overall the amount of general positivity and interest seemed higher than I can recall in recent history.

The following night my car was on display at the open space showing of BTTF and the amount of interest was huge. After an hour another local off-grid owner showed up! All original and built within 40 cars of Patrick's.
