Going through my box of parts from the PO and came across this ... thing. What is it and what did it do?

TIA!

The plate is supposed to bolt the transmission on the driver side (#101075) where the flywheel is. It is a 'pickup' that was supposed to be there for diagnostic purposes but no one knows if the flywheel actually has anything for this to read (it would have been perfect, if it did indeed work, to use for EFI!).

Thanks. That's curious.

If I can find the other half of the wire, I'll attempt to reconnect it. If not, I'll just clean it up, paint it and bolt it back on without the wire, I suppose.

There's no point in connecting it. It does nothing :D

On my car I clipped the wire and left the plug head in place.

Agreed, unless you want it for originality or whatever then install /connect it. Otherwise, that plate makes it a PITA to remove the engine/transmission and the sensor isn't useful for anything. When I had that engine, I removed the plate with the pickup & the whole diagnostic plug completely.

What about the flywheel inspection protection plate, which is also in the box. Does that serve a purpose?

It is also just another protective cover for the flywheel, you remove it to check the condition of the teeth, etc. I haven't had that, or the other plate installed for 17 years and have not had any issues, no debris got in, etc.

Probably one of my favorite things about DMC or at least dmcmw. They seem completely honest about what parts you need. Dmcmw inspected my car after I bought it and went through and broke down everything into how critical it was and if it was an easy diy job. Big difference from jiffy lube trying to scam me into changing my power steering fluid on my first oil change with my first car.
