A few weeks ago I drove my car to a club meeting a friend invited me to. I have a lowered suspension and somewhere along the route I bottomed out on a dip in the road I didn't see. A few days later I noticed something hanging under the rear of my car and found it was a broken zip tie that was wrapped around the middle of the frame just beneath the transmission. Over the next few days I could hear a rattle in the rear of the car and finally got around to inspecting it this past weekend. There's a plate about 8 inches wide sitting between the frame and bell housing with 4 holes in it that is just laying on the frame, but there's not enough space to remove it. I found a delorean.com support article on removing the transmission that notes this plate can be removed and tossed, but doesn't say what it is. Does anyone know what it's for? Since I can't remove it, I've secured it with a new zip-tie to silence the rattle.

It is probably part # 101073 Flywheel Protection Plate. Refer to 4-1-1. It is not an essential part and can be removed. In fact, if you ever remove the transmission, it is so difficult to remove that plate (and put it back) that it is commonly tossed.

We have a winner - it's the flywheel inspection plate. I looked right over it on the part diagrams. Thanks!
