View Full Version : Engine Ecoboost 2.3 4 cyl mated to stock trans?

Just fishing for opinions.
The ecoboost is small, cheap(used) , lightweight, and puts out nearly 300 HP. Seems like a sensible swap. How would one go about getting an adapter to the manual trans, plus clutch/flywheel. Nearly 300 HP is probably more than the rest of the systems can take, and would shed about 75 lbs off the extreme rear end of the chassis.
what say all?

Getting an engine swap to fit the stock transaxle is going to take a machined adapter plate which is a small piece of the engine swap puzzle. That design work has already been done for chevy LS engines (see LS swap threads on this board for more details) but as far as I know there hasn't been any 2.3L ecoboost swaps to date. That will mean a lot of measuring, CAD work, and CNC machining. If the engine actually fits in the engine bay without pushing the trans forward then you can reuse the stock trans mounts. But more than likely there will not be room to fit the engine with the transmission in the existing location. You'll also need custom engine mounts, not to mention a NOS fogger system, a T4 turbo, AIC controller, direct port nitrous injection and a stand alone fuel management system. And try not to blow yourself up, period.

Well said.
The adapter and flywheel (assuming you would retain a manual transmission) would be the first major hurdle.

But according to DeLorean fanatics, swapping an engine is as easy as changing wheels. Just in the past month there have been several people who bought a car and ask advice on what engine they should swap in it. I mean all you need is a car, engine, maybe a set of custom motor mounts and an afternoon.
One of you is lying!

Not a bad way to spend $10,000.

I vote we engine swap in the motor from Michael's van into his car, and vice versa. Force him into a corner and make him watch.

It would decimate all, after, he puts about fifteen grand in it or more. And if he has to, overnight parts from Japan.
These are the additions and the basic layout of the car....

Throw on some KONI adjustables and THIS is what it could look like when it's done.

I can't help but to be skeptical whenever a new owner buys a project and asks "OK what engine should I drop in it?" As if picking out a color to paint the bedroom.

That kept running through my mind when I was buying my delorean. I worked at a crash test facility and we had a couple of hellcats that had been rolled over. This was complete fantasy cause I wouldnt have been able to get any of those engines.
Hoonigan posted a video of a hellcat swapped miata https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uluPFWvMis&list=LL8Eh-Cz-bartxOecdG5qcDg&index=103 After watching it, my stupid fantasies for a super fast delorean finally stopped lol. Now i just want to make a "bulletproof", low maintenance car that'll last forever.

Yeah: "I don't know whether to swap the engine or replace the headliners first. What should I do?" says the guy who bought a car - with no brakes.

The extra weight over the rear axle will give him better traction, for the holeshot.

there is some truth here. It is hard to spin the tires with all the weight back there.

If you're going to do an engine swap, go big or go home.

Man, I photoshopped an engine into Michael's car and found a way to quote the fast and the furious like 11 times, and I still lost to Dave.
But I guess winning is winning, it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile.
That's NOT what she said!

Dave knows a few things. One of the things Dave knows is it's not how you stand next to your DeLorean, it's how you deliver fuel to your DeLorean.
You better learn that.
