When you install a turbo kit on a Delorean do you have modify the exhaust any? My friend owns a twin turbo Delorean and it's LOUD! Personally I think it was just his preference.

It's not so much a modification as a (total?) replacement. Since a turbocharger utilizes the exhaust flow as its power source it has to be attached to the exhaust directly. This means special manifolds on each bank of the engine that attaches to a turbo (not sure if the single turbo kits on a D replace both exhaust manifolds or not). Then the rest of the exhaust downstream of the turbo has to be replaced to attach to the turbo's exhaust outlet.

I'm not sure if any of the turbo kits used special mufflers or not, but the Island TT that I saw ran dual mufflers out the rear of the car instead of the large one installed at the factory.

As far as noise, turbos will muffle some of that noise but the mufflers are easily changed in any case and that's where the most adjustment of the exhaust note typically happens.

Thanks for the info Admiral Senn! Yea the extra horsepower is nice, but the exhaust note is a bit loud. My friend's car is in immaculate condition, he even waxes the frame! He also owns a Concours Delorean. I included a picture of his Turbo Delorean engine.

For a single turbo system, you could probably make the original muffler work. For twin turbos, no. Keep in mind that the turbo itself takes energy OUT of the exhaust stream so theoretically, if you keep all else the same, add a turbo, the exhaust note could be quieter than original. However since most adding turbos want optimal flow, they go for a more open muffler (or even none at all!) For my setup, I went with a flowmaster dual in/dual out setup. I don't think it's overly loud. Anyone who's heard my car can chime in on their opinion of the exhaust note.

My friend cut part of the exhaust off on his, but managed to keep the catalytic converters. Just picture the stock exhaust sound magnified several times.

Blow-off valve aside, that is a great sounding car.

Thanks, It's just a flowmaster and VERY short overall system. The plan was to route the blowoff valves back into the intake tract, but they require adapters to get connect a hose to them and I was too cheap/lazy/out of time before DCS 2010 to add them. I can do it at any time. Just haven gotten around to it. :)

If you've ever heard an Island Turbo car which is in 'stock' kit form, they are in fact quieter than a stock DeLorean. Even a BAE turbo DeLorean is no louder than a stock DeLo. The only way a turbo DeLorean would be louder than a stock one is if the exhaust system diameter is increased, if there are no catalytic converter(s), and if someone chose to add loud mufflers such as Flowmasters. Mainly it all has to do with choice of mufflers. The turbos themselves actually help dissipate noise in the exhaust system. Things like blow off valves (such as Steve's car has in the above video) add new noise to the car tho. The blow off valve noise is that "HISS!" sound you hear when he lets off the throttle.

Speaking of turbos, has there been any news or updates on DMCEU's Legend Industries twin turbo recreation?

I remember it back on the old site and it looked beautiful.

Your car looks great in video! Do you know what kind of BHP your system is putting out?

That DeLorean is amazing! Even with the BOV~ but I guess that's a newer generation thing. I'm no stranger to messing with turbocharged systems, I guess it'd be a real treat for me to convert it from N/A. How do the internals of the engine hold up to the boost? Normally you'd want to strengthen the internals of a N/A car before you throw on some type of force induction, does the DeLorean fall in this category? Or is it just boost and go?

I really wanted to go with a V8~ just to give it that grumble that we've all heard from the movies. But your video is definitely making turbo charging the V6 another great option.

The stock internals of the stock 2.85 liter engine do NOT hold up well to boost. The BAE and Island turbo kits of the 80s ran only ~5 psi, and many of those engines are suffering from blow-by.

I'm running the Eagle 3.0. Josh at DPI has reportedly been running a 3.0 with 14 pounds of boost with no problems on stock internals (with a good tune).

This brings to mind - How does the 2.85 engine do with boost after getting, for example, Ed Uding's forged pistons + beefier piston rings? The rods are already forged. What else would need to be addressed?

the only real problem of the stock engine, even if you put forged piston is, is the difficult to easily tune the fuel and most, the timing. Also, the stock cams are not so good for forced induction, can work but makes the exhaust valves a bit too hot that needed.
The stock compression ratio is low, and it's not bad. But you can go more CR and with an EFI use boost, i see some people here use the stock internals of the 3.0 wich are 9,5:1 and with good tune and not so much boost have no problem :)
On my 3.0lt twinturbo i have pistons for 7,6:1 compression ratio, the stock compression of the turbo renault 3.0 PRV, and i run at 13psi, planning goin more in future with better oil and air cooling.
After the timing and fuel, the second problem with a powerful turbo engine is the Oil Cooling. The engine oil pump is a bit lacky.

Is there not a how to on how to go twin turbo w/ the PVR's?
