Saw this while channel surfing this morning.
Totally 80's Week on GMA this week.
Nice 82 DeLorean was there to start the week
on display at about 7:55am Chicago time.
JZD signature on edge of inside door jamb on
the passenger door (close-up when door open).

Ugh. Wrong year for a BTTF car, first of all, and then there's the fact that it's a stock car...
I hate the stupid BTTF connection.

I like how they called it an 81 yet it had a flat hood. Perhaps it was a new car from Houston. I hear that all of their new cars (including 81 models) have flat hoods.

I believe she just said the first models rolled off the line in 1981. She didn't specifically say the one they were filming was an 81.

Actually getting into the city was EASY. I had to be there at 44th & Bdwy @ 5:00 AM so there was almost NO traffic till I got to the tunnel. I used to have *some* respect for news organizations. If you ever watch a show like this you quickly figure out that they have little to do with news and all about entertainment. It was interesting to see it though. I had a GREAT spot in the middle of Times Square with a permit to park! Getting out wasn't too bad, it is not very far from the Lincoln Tunnel and once I got into NJ the traffic in the morning getting out of town was light. The most memorable thing was the alternator light coming on and wondering just how far you can go before the battery gets too low to run the motor! I had a battery pack so with that I made it home. Now I have to rebuild the alternator.

Wanted to chime in as a D owner living in NYC (re: getting around 101) - it's actually not too bad in a D at all... You find that most cars are extra careful once they see you are driving a DeLorean. And obviously avoid rush hour, Times Square, and construction at all costs ;) The one thing I worry about is the car going "dead" in the middle of heavy traffic and of course any car's mortal enemy: the "pot hole". Do be warned that even when waiting for a turn, you will get a crowd snapping photos, raising hand gestures, and an occasional shout-out. Can be a fun place to drive and puts a smile on many faces. If you park on the street, be prepared to spend a good 20 minutes with a curious spectator. Nice D Dave by the way!

Oh, another BTTF-fanboy...
This dead horse has been flogged to the point where it's ready to be scraped into the Spam can. Nobody can say for sure what would have been and it's pointless to argue. In the end, the younger owners who know of the car exclusively from BTTF are going to defend it to the death and swear up and down that the DeLorean owes everything to BTTF. The others like myself, if fewer in number and a typically less vocal group (myself excluded), will state that the car deserves to be judged on its merits as a car instead of as a movie prop.

For my part, I found out about the car from BTTF, but it was more of a "wait, that was a REAL CAR underneath all that sci-fi prop nonsense?" moment.
I didn't fall in love until after I discovered the DML and started researching. So, yes, the movies sparked my interest, but I don't credit them with my attachment to the car.
It does get annoying, though. I love the movies as much as anyone else but it would be nice to have somebody NOT go "OH BACK TO THE FUTURE CAR LOL" once in a while.

People need to stop insulting the car by saying that it's only worth anything as a movie prop. That is simply not the case. Here are a handful of examples:
Brand new car company from the ground up.
The amazing work performed by the Irish workforce. (perhaps the biggest accomplishment.)
Designed to last indefinitely.
From marsh to factory producing cars in record time.
Amazing marketing campaign; buying a DeLorean is buying a lifestyle (Still true.)
Beautifully styled.
Reliable with only basic maintenance.
New and unique manufacturing ideas.
Replaceable panels in case of accident damage.
There are more, but I think this is as good of a time as any to mention the "Search" feature.

Most of what you've described is what most car manufacturers set out for when they design and produce any new type of car. You have brought nothing new to the conversation of the DeLoreans worth without its publicity for being a prop. Besides it being a new company from the ground up, a unique design, and a classic car- I see nothing more that derives from the car itself. No performance record, no safety record, no ground breaking world records- in fact the only record that I'm able to see is the amount of time it took J. Delorean to stand up his company and then watch it fall.
Now, I'm here on this site studying and researching on buying my own DMC12 and its not because of its superb power plant, 1/4 mile times, or amazing trunk capacity. It's because this car is a one of a kind, unique affordable classic that will always remind me of a time in my childhood when things were so much simpler. A car that I've seen over 100 times on VHS and over 1000 times in my dreams. This car would literally be a vehicle in which I can revisit my childhood. No other car in the world would be able to do that for me. So you see- yes, I feel a special link between myself and the DMC-12- and no it has nothing to do with the pro's and con's of the car itself, or even the Irish workforce. But lets just be serious here for a moment shall we, IMHO the DMC-12 would be nothing but a faint whisper without its footprint in the movie world. It'd be nothing more than a Pontiac Fiero, and companies like DMC in Texas wouldn't have the demand it needed to open up its doors to generations of DMC-12 owners/wanna be owners. You're right though, thats just my own personal opinions, just like you have your own.
No need to use the "search" function- you've told me all I need to know.

Whatever. In the end, it's just your opinion vs. mine. You won't agree with what I say and will always see the car through your BTTF-goggles. With how many people we get here per month that post "OMG I wantz me a delorian!!!!111!11 You guyz must love teh BTTF movies I do 88 MPH Flux Capacitor LOL!!!11!!!!" and then fade away, I'm not going to waste my time any further.
I like the DeLorean as a car, use one as a daily driver most summer months, and judge it as a car. You brought up the Fiero; fun little cars that are very similar. They have a far better following, no doubt to the higher production numbers, and they didn't need a movie. The DeLorean would have survived without the movies; it's only the popular concept of the car and the appeal that would have changed. Bricklins still fetch around the same price as a DeLorean and they're the closest independent contemporary for analysis.
But, I'm done arguing pointless what-ifs with you. In the end, I like my DeLoreans and bought them out of a legitimate enjoyment of the car and own them despite the detriment of BTTF. If you doubt that there's a lot of hassle and headache from BTTF that can be trying to your patience, buy a DeLorean and drive it daily or take it to every possible car show for a year. You'll have a completely different outlook.

lmao. Well man I hope to meet you one day soon maybe at a meet :) Hopefully over some grilled steak and coke. But I can understand where your frustration would come from~ and I don't dismiss the actual DeLorean enthusiast that you are. I highly respect it. I tell people all the time that my dream car's been a DeLorean and they always come up with dumb stuff to say, so I could see actually owning one and how living with the 2nd hand stardom would get repetitive and disrespectful at times. Hopefully soon I'll make my purchase.
I plan on taking a trip up to DMC CA tomorrow to go through the tour and get up close and personal with some.

Sorry I don't want to be *that guy* but you really should have adjusted your doors before this. There's no reason she should have had to push that door up and out of the way. It just reinforces the idea (popularized by BTTF) that you have to fumble with the door and bump your head to get out.

Actually DMC in Texas opened it's doors in the mid 80's as DeLorean One, DMC in California was known as DeLorean Motor Center and was open before DeLorean One in Texas, anyway my point being that both the shops predate BTTF. So your wrong in your assumption, these shops did have and still would have the demand to operate without the car being a prop in some movies.

Funny, I had noticed how the weather guy had to merely press down gently to get the door to latch perfectly. Compared to my doors, you could simply think David's doors shut.
I imagine that the gal with the trenchcoat and the microphone was flustered because she missed her cue, probably due to the smoke machine duct being stuck in the other door. She was trying to hurry. Also, she wasn't sitting properly. And she was wearing heels. Anyone I have seen who isn't accustomed to getting in and out of the car needs a few tries before they get it 100% right.

That was Lara Spencer. She was wearing a skirt, not a good choice getting in and out of a Delorean! On top of that they were pumping in smoke from a drum filled with Dry Ice which is Carbon Dioxide. Another moment and she probably would have passed out and fell over when the door opened! You can tell she was trying to catch her breath when she started talking. My doors do open and close nicely. All that means is if you take the time (a LOT of time) you can get the doors to work very smoothly.

Bad news for the lovely and talented Miss Spencer, but good news for your car, I think: if they'd used a "fog machine" you would have ended up with propylene glycol instead, which leaves a sticky film when used in large quantities.

Ya I'm sure she wasn't sure how to get out and that high curb doesn't help, but my point is upon clicking the door handle the door should open smoothly by itself without stopping short or bouncing several times at the top.

So which is it -- bouncing at the top or not opening fast enough for Lara Spencer, who had never had to get in and out of a DeLorean before?
I look forward to seeing your perfect DeLorean on national TV. :)

You are either trying to make a straw man argument or are confusing my point.
If the door would have been adjusted properly, one should only have to click the handle to get out. My issue is obviously not that she had a problem figuring out how to open it but that the door didn't open all the way due to lack of maintenance and that this reflects poorly on the brand.

It was a chilly 50 degrees that morning and I had the struts working perfectly at 70 or above. As we all know the struts are pressure devices affected by ambient temperatures. Less well known is how difficult it is to get out of the Delorean in high heels and a skirt. Especially when parked next to a high curb. She was holding on to the pull strap for balance. That was after she was in a smoke filled car breathing in CO2 because the guy was pumping in the smoke from Dry Ice to make a fog. That's show business!
