View Full Version : Brake temporarily capping brake lines...

I'm about to pull my calipers to rebuild them. As such the brake lines would drip/drain for at least a few days. What is recommended to pop onto the end of the brake lines to seal them once I disconnect them? I don't have my old lines anymore and I'd rather not have to go through trial and error once I pop one or all loose...

Suggestions?

Just rubber-band a ziploc bag over the ends to keep the fod out. An airtight seal is unnecessary because you'll have to do a bleed after disconnecting the lines anyway.

FWIW:
Tom, you know Dennis is creating figurines and uses all kinds of plastic.
I found one of his soft plastic rods fits the inside of the brake line.
I cut some short pieces and it seals the line perfectly.

Guess you will need to go out to a shop to find that stuff though.

Aha! I have wooden skewers like those used in kabobs. Because they have tapered ends like a miniature pencil, they should wedge in place. Then a plastic bag with rubberband to catch any seepage.

Thank you both.

Vacuum nipples similar to the ones put on door light switches work ok.

If i had to believe my physics teacher from 20 years back, there should not be a drop of fluid coming out from the hoses themselves, as they are held by the vacuum on the other side (unless you are holding them horizontal that is). Like the same way you can move fluids by squeezing the straw (in expensive words, a pipet).

But I don't believe him, and i wouldn't risk it, since that brake fluid is such nasty stuff..

I'm pretty sure they will continue to drip. I had the clutch slave disconnected overnight a few weeks back and it did - same fluid.

Amazing though how I didn't believe him, and I turned to IT, which came in manageable incomprehensible manuals (at the time). Unfortunately, I understood these manuals a little too easy.
