Engine slogs along when AC is turned on

About a week ago the car started slogging along when the AC is turned on. It isn't immediate. If I run the AC for about 10 minutes the car feels like it's dragging a boat anchor. Even if I cut the AC it still sputters along and has no pick up. If I let the car sit over night the issue is gone in the morning. If I run the AC for 10mins it comes back. I believe it happened when I ran the heater as well.

Make sure the frequency valve is buzzing and none of the vacuum hoses got disconnected.

I would go over all the vacuum lines, may be a leak.

Perhaps the HVAC control Knob has an air leak in certain positions. When things are OK, is the control knob OFF or VENT. If the there's no issue when the knob is set to OFF does it happen when set to VENT? When the AC is on, any difference whether the knob is on MAX or NORM? When the knob is selected to MAX, the heating valve is turned off. There is also an vacuum operated actuator damper behind the console. Either could be leaking.
