View Full Version : FB: To Be, or Not To Be

So now I have seen enough posts on DMCTalk (Talk) where someone states they are not on Facebook (FB). I too am not on FB. Rather than hijack someone else’s thread, I’d like to start a poll as to who is on FB, who isn’t and who won’t.

How would this poll benefit the DeLorean community you ask? I view Talk as a central repository of DeLorean specific information. It was here first I believe, and became predominant before other DeLorean groups formed and became popular. While FB, DMCToday (Today) and other DeLorean Community websites have value, they take away value from Talk, unless the original poster redundantly posts in the various and multiple places (action which costs additional time investment by the poster).

So let’s hear it, what’s your position regarding FB and other DeLorean sites/groups?

Thank you.

(Poll added. Please just reply None if you are not part of any other site/group)

I am,

Just so my ex girlfriends and girls that didn't like me in HS can look me up to see what an awesome catch they let get away before they have their 4th drink of the afternoon and pass out in a flood of tears and misery over this prime piece of man estate.

DMCTalk is an extraordinary repository of information. I've read it extensively, even before I even got my car, and even when certain people told me I "Wasn't classic car owner material". If I have a problem,
it's almost certain someone here has had the problem and multiple solutions. For that, I'm very thankful.

Still, I don't post my issues here - I'm tired of getting content-free lectures, and there's an air of elitism. Facebook in general tends to be a better format for posting pictures and whatnot.

Lectures or crickets :D

The current version of board software is my concern. vBulletin 4.2.5 was been end of life for a long time and requires server software that is end of life.

It's one failed backup away from being hacked and going to dmctalk.com heaven.

Last time, I didn't even ask a question - I just mentioned I was going to do something. I got a lecture anyway, which proved to contain zero value whatsoever for the task at hand.

FB is like an easter egg hunt time suck, yeah you find an egg that has candy in it but it hardly is ever the piece of candy you are looking for. DMCTalk.org is organized and searchable. You don't have to scroll for hours to not find what your looking for.

I do belong to FB but also try to completely stay away because of "the waste of time suck".

I am connected to a veterans group to keep connected though.

I also come here to get questions answered & lmao on some of the comments like above . . . " don't need the lecture". :bigclap:

I mostly avoid FB. I also find the whole format not particularly good for sharing technical information.

Also... the poll seems to be kind of broken. No way to choose DMCTalk only.

FB censors people. That's all I need to know and I won't go there. I hope they go out of business.

On the lectures, here. It's a forum, say your piece and see what comes back. Disregard the stuff that doesn't suit you.

I am the OP, and yeah, you're right...I neglected to have a way to choose DMCTalk only. That's my oversight, and I attempted to correct it by adding an option for DMCTalk only, but I could not edit the poll after submitting it. Sorry about that. Please just make a post saying DMCTalk only if that is the case (and yes, that is me too).

I would have picked "Other DeLorean Blogs/sites/clubs/groups, but choose not to disclose".
But I don't think I have PPD and wouldn't want anyone to know if I did.

I don't care if they censor cuss words. I don't care if they say no political discussion. But I have a problem when the forum takes one side of a political discussion and censors the other side. I have a problem when they promote science that they agree with, but censor science they don't agree with.

If someone on here says mechanical fuel injection is the best and lists his reasons. Great. Someone else can come on and say a carburetor is better with his reasons. Great! Now the admin comes on and says EFI is the only way and deletes the others. I'll be leaving.

I see you enjoy yourselves. :)

Back to the topic, I use Facebook regularly, and however the problems you all describe are valid, it is still a great tool to keep contact with others. Even with other Delorean owners. On the Facebook, the Delorean Fanatics, the Delorean Historians are great groups with rare documents, pictures and mostly good people. Obviously, Facebook groups are not capable to be a good place to store and search information about the car's servicing or real deep research, but for fast answers for questions and for some eyecandy, much better, than a forum.

Back to the topic....
Huh?? The OP asked about our "position regarding FB and other DeLorean sites/groups". Michael tooted DMCTodays' horn and I paid him back. Surely you aren't suggesting the mods should censure the lighthearted banter and delete it as OT?

Of course I did. The Resources is one of the best thing on this site, but for me, watching photos on Facebook is much easier than here. But if I need to fix my car and I need help, this is the place I go. Each site has it's strengths.

It's cool that you're an experienced mechanic and know what to disregard and have found your place here - you are clearly enjoying yourself, and that's great.

I am a new mechanic (well, one year now), and don't always know what advice (or "advice") to disregard. Like I said earlier, some of the older threads have
some fantastic information, but Facebook for me has proven far far better to ask questions and share things I've found. Many people seem to agree with
this - the number of new people to venture here seems to have been quite small. That means Talk is now largely old-timers - maybe that's OK,
but be careful what you ask for.

I guess I'm starting to fall into the old timer category...

In general I prefer the forum format over facebook. Here, everything is organized and posts are a linear discussion from start to end. FB moves posts out of order based on popularity unless you continually go through and re-sort by recent. It's harder to see what is new and less popular posts get buried easily. The multiple comment threads in a single post go off on random tangents too and looking back more than 10 previous comments is not set up very well on FB.

This forum software is definitely showing it's age though. Over on e46fanatics.com they recently upgraded to a more modern layout and it takes some getting used to, but is much better overall. It supports dark mode settings and has a much better method for uploading and sharing photos. Private messages also look more like a normal thread and are easier to follow with all the previous messages showing as posts instead of nested quotes. And you can like people's posts which is also a nice feature.

I have a saying "Listen to everyone and make up your own mind". There's people on here that hate my guts, but that doesn't mean I can't learn something from them. It probably is mostly old timers now, (me included) but some of the old tricks still work.

I understand FB could and is a fantastic resource, but censorship could be the death of freedom. I have never been very political and I hold both liberal and conservative views.

In any case, I hope you will stay here and contribute. If you see something on FB that you think might be interesting for Delorean owners, please pass it on.

Unless it's the John DeLorean estate/Trump country club story. That's taboo here.

Well, that's just it, isn't it? People are determined to share their philosophy, here - tell people how to think; gets real tiresome. Anyway, it doesn't - matter,
as I said, new owners aren't coming here mostly.

To pick up a few stragglers? Probably not - anyway, it'd just be links to Facebook, which yinz don't read.

I do both. But I find myself spending less time here due to the antiquity of how this forum works. I love pics, and fb wins for pics, just not organization as others have stated.

It doesn't help with mobile, but on PC/Mac you can make Facebook far more tolerable with this add-on:
https://www.fbpurity.com/

Removes ads. Hides posts based on keywords.
No more of your friends dumb political opinions, only their dumb pets, kids, and cars.
