Tonight a kid at Winn Dixie yells across the parking lot, "How much did it cost?"

I mean, he really yelled it. I yelled back, "Thats kind of personal. Is that really the first thing you have to say?"

I don't mind humoring the BTTF comments but do people realize how rude it is to not even say hello and immediately ask what you paid for something? I go out of my way to answer questions and take the extra time to be nice to people, but they have to show a little respect. Otherwise they don't get any of my time.

Oh well, thats my rant. Its time to post and see how long it takes before Sean moves this thread/post.

I bet we've all had that question a hundred times. Either that or "what's that thing worth?"

I don't mind discussing the finance of it with other owners because they know and appreciate the situation; but I do find it gauche for the squawking rabble :) And the fact that it was his first remark was really the icing on the cake...

I think people like this kid generally think its a $100k plus car. I should have offered to sell it to him for half of that but I doubt he had the money since he was pushing buggies.

my response is "Less than a new Kia"

That poor kid would go nuts if he thought he could find one that "cheap".

It's not the cost, it's the keep.

When someone asks me what I paid or what it cost, I just tell them what they're valued (on the high side) as though that was their question. Typically after that kind of answer, people aren't ignorant enough to come back and say, "yea but what did YOU pay for it."

I'm fine with telling someone what I paid & comparing it to the value range of what they typically run. BUT, I have also had the "How much?!" yells from across the street. I've always thought that to be extremely rude.

From now on, I think I'll just reply back "Hi, I'm fine, thanks! You have a nice day too!" & get back in the car & leave. Should be obvious at that point that I disliked their request for information. :angry0:

I've been hit with the "whatever...what did YOU pay for YOUR car?" bit after general pricing. Hate it. It's rude, none of their business, and I don't particularly like talking about how I got my car in a casual setting or car show.

Usually I sidestep the question like it was never asked. Most people don't keep pushing, but those who do will be asked personal questions in return. Usually they get it after that.

Still don't get it? "Hey, have a nice day. Enjoy the rest of the show" and I turn my back on them.

One response I use is "Less than you would expect, more than you can afford".

This is how I normally respond, explaining to them about the "rule of 20-25", ending it with "and this one is in that range".

I was recently asked "How much did you pay for that?" I just said "Too much." But I like the idea of saying "Fine, thanks. How are you?" :)

Sometimes I answer their question with a question.

"How much do you think it is worth?" and "What did you pay for your car?".

Both of these questions get interesting responses.

Another question I get is, "How did you get it?"

I then tell them, "I bought it".

My standard response:

You can buy a running delorean for between 15 and 25 thousand. A running 15K Delorean will have some problems. The more you pay the less problems you will have.

If you pay less you will have to pay 10-20 K to get it running.

You can buy a rebuilt (not new, let's not get into that discussion) delorean for 75K.

So far that has satisfied everyone that has asked.

I get that a lot too. Ususally it's, "dude, where did you get this thing?"

My answer: "from a guy selling it."

I dont get it, do they expect some juicy story about being part of a heist where I stole the car from a rival drug lord? Or that John DeLorean gave it to me as payment for helping him build a deck? ....actually, I may start using that... haha

Maybe next time I'll tell them I inherited it from my uncle who used to be a prop guy for Universal Studios.

My second standard response:

There were about 9,000 made and there are 6,000 still on the road.

When they went out of business there were parts for 2,000 more. The company that bought the parts now has 5 dealerships across the country. I bought mine from DMC Florida in Bonita Springs. You can also find them on Ebay, Craig's List, etc

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have no clue how much my car has cost me over the past ~15 years of ownership... it's not that I haven't kept records - I have a file that is disturbingly thick, but I don't even want to know what the total is. Yikes...

I figured out about two years ago what I have spent on my DeLorean. I regretted doing that, and won't be doing it again.

Yikes is right! Here's a hint Travis, if you have an engine that looks like yours (Vin# 6344). You've spent some money. I'd say this project alone would fill a folder full.

Dang! I just realized, I took a really good picture of your engine.

The only thing I saw were the words Winn Dixie, I thought that place went out of business?

Many rednecks would die of starvation if Winn Dixie were to go out of business.

Nonsense. ;)

When a woman asked me this question point blank at a car show I said "Only if you tell me how much you paid for your house." She seemed a bit put off at first, and I explained that it was a rather forward question to ask someone. I told her the general cost for a D and she told me how much her house cost, and she went on her way. The question is a bit rude, rather than asking indirectly "how much they go for."
