I'm finishing up a new suspension and I'm having some trouble wrapping my head around the alignment numbers as given in the bulletin.
At first glance it seems straightforward: 3mm toe-in per wheel.
I have a strings alignment setup and different wheels with tire diameters. Its easier to convert to toe angle rather than mm or inches.
Converting a static measurement like 3mm requires a fixed diameter measurement to find the angle. The question is, what is that diameter?
-Tire diameter
-Wheel diameter
-A fixed industry standard, such as 28" described in the SmartStrings (https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5bdb777fb40b9d56d366c120/t/5e8fa97ad61b45104194a735/1586473357362/SRP.101.015+SmartStrings+Instructions+Rev+11+04-09-20.pdf) alignment manual
Here's where it gets muddled :)
-If related to a fixed standard, both ends of the car have the same angle in degrees.
-If related to tire/wheel diameter, the rear spec is actually less toe in than the front due to the larger diameter. This would place the rear thrust angle further forward.
-In either case, neither matches the degrees value in figure 4 given in the bulletin
ST-34-1/82 specifies 3mm or 0.12". There is a chart of fractional inches to degrees.
1/8" (.125") is about .26 degrees, so this chart indicates a hair under .26 degrees

3mm is 0.11811", which, when multiplying by 2 gives you 0.23622" Total Toe, which is what the site (https://robrobinette.com/ConvertToeInchesToDegrees.htm) requests in the first box. It looks like you may have entered toe for one wheel instead?
For the front (diameter 23.2"), I calculate 0.2916948901253558 degrees for each wheel.
For the rear (diameter 26.1"), I calculate 0.2592834064593833 degrees for each wheel.
Thus for a total toe of 0.23622" (roughly 1/4"), the conversion table in ST-34-1/82 states, 1/4" = 0.51 degrees, which is pretty close to 0.259*2, so I consider this confirmation that my calculations above are correct. :thumbup:
As a side note, I believe the conversion table on page 4 of ST-34-1/82 could be more accurately labeled as applicable to the rear toe measurement only.

While it is possible to do an alignment with a ruler and string, it is one of the jobs best done by someone with some experience and a modern 4 wheel alignment rack. For $80-$100 and an hour of time they can do it a lot faster (and probably more accurately) than you at home. Some jobs just aren't worth trying to do yourself like mounting and balancing tires, glass work, and alignments. Get it wrong and the car can be hard to control, especially in a panic situation, and you wear out tires quickly. Find the shop in your area that does police cars and ambulances, they usually do the best work. Once done an alignment will hold unless you have an accident or replace suspension parts (a long time). Signs that you need an alignment and/or you have worn or bent parts;
Steering wheel not centered when going straight on a flat road
Car tends to wander (doesn't want to go or stay straight)
Car tends to go to one side when not braking (can also be a dragging caliper)
Tires wearing unevenly (first check air pressure)
Steering wheel does not want to return to center by itself
These symptoms can also be caused by a bad tire. Any good shop will check tires and suspension BEFORE trying to do an alignment. No point doing an alignment on a car with worn or bent parts or bad tires, it won't work. To prepare a car for an alignment you can:
Check for any worn, loose, bent parts
1/2 tank of gas
Check the tire pressures
Replace any old or worn tires
Remove all of the "junk" in the car.
Lubricate the suspension
Bring the alignment specs. If the machine doesn't have them already the tech can enter them manually.
Ideally you should bring a set of shims for the rear TAB's and the proper torque specs. Remove the shields. The only adjustments are the front toe, centering the steering wheel and the toe on each rear wheel. All of the other specs are to be checked and if not within spec something is worn, bent or broken. If the ride height has been changed, it affects all of the other specs.

Oh, you're right, I missed that the site specifically called out total toe, d'oh!
That lines things up more closely to defacto 0.245 degrees which is looking like the number to shoot for.

Enjoy the process. What I meant when I mentioned "junk" is all of the stuff you accumulate in the car. If you take the weight of the car, fill the gas tank,add the weight of 2 people and then look at the max, there isn't much left for anything. You can overgross the car very easily. Besides, that weight changes the ride height and that affects all of the specs. To really do an alignment you take measurements at at least several ride heights and make a chart. Then you can see how things change over the suspension travel. You use sandbags to simulate a driver. You need bearing plates so the suspension can "settle out" because the wheels move in and out and tilt as the ride height changes. "Back-in-the-day" all we had were bubble levels and got it close. Today we can split degrees with lasers. The better your alignment the better the tire wear and gas mileage. This whole topic can take up a collage course. I recommend you find a good book on suspension tuning. There are also a lot of youtube videos on this. After you finish you will have a much better appreciation of the science of alignments.

There are a 101 reasons to do your own alignments with these cars. Formula 1 cars do it but I guess Deloreans are too complicated lol . I'll be subscribing to string theory.

It's the same advice you gave me last year. Take David T with you to fill your tank and for alignments, then you don't need to worry about anything.

LOL, at least some things are consistent.
ANYWAY...
You don't need bearing plates, any two surfaces that can slip will work and it's pretty well documented on Porsche and Miata forums where people actually race their cars every weekend. I bought a few cheap cutting boards and built a set of wheel cribs. This puts the car in the air, but on its own wheels, and you can turn the front tires to settle things out for measurements.
Replacement suspension parts are available for our cars to adjust all 3 in front, and toe/camber in the rear.
Caster & camber are extremely easy to check & set these days. I picked up the Tenhulzen hands-free caster/camber gauge but there are a few options.
For toe I have the B&G string kit. In a pinch you can use toe plates which are much faster to set up, but you only adjust total toe and not per-wheel.
I'm wrapping up a KW installation w/ rear adjustable upper links, and am just waiting on the adjuster part of DPI front LCAs with caster adjust system. Large caster values are probably best set using the UCA and once I have a new UCA option in place, will likely use the lower adjustment to fine tune caster (or equalize setback if present), but set most caster on the UCA. The goal is "performance touring" but as per last alignment in 2016, there is a silly amount of cross-caster and camber is all jacked up. It's not a pleasant highway drive.
There will also probably be some tuning of suspension height over time and will eventually borrow a portable corner scale set to fine-tune the coilovers.
I plan to build some snap-on fixtures to speed up and enhance the accuracy of toe adjustment, which furthers the need for a target toe angle. Once it's done will probably host some tech days where we can check & set alignments in fairly short order.
Clearly there is no alignment shop that can set ride height, corner balance, and test various numbers during a driving season for $80

Don't forget to add your time calling around trying to find a shop that is willing to work on your D, and also the fact that you would have to be there too.
There are a 101 reasons to do your own alignments with these cars.... I'll be subscribing to string theory.

I'm almost afraid to post here because I don't consider myself to be any alianment expert, but I've never heard of any vehical having 1/4" toe. Nothing jumps out at me on your math, but It's usually in the range of 1/16" to 1/8" or even less. Maybe the D is differnt because of the light front end. I haven't seen the numbers in a official publication, but are you sure it's 3mm per wheel? (Not total?)

Edit, thinking about it, maybe the D has so much toe because the lower control arm is so poorly located in the fore and aft direction. I would say it could be reduced if you install a LCA brace.

The book says 3mm or .12" per wheel. I have a car now that wants between 3/16-1/4 toe so while uncommon, there are a few vehicles out there that take a that much.

Sorry Luke, I should have specified that the car I mention is not a DeLorean, it's just another one of my project cars - my point was to ... Helirich ... (I thought Henrik posted the above question about 1/4" or I would not have posted !! I guess that's what happens with a quick glance at the phone) that there are/WERE other cars out there that do want upwards of 1/4". I was also just stating the manual says "per wheel" not "total" in response to his last question, that's all. I do have some cheap toe plates kicking around somewhere but I haven't used them on my DeLorean which also doesn't have stock tires but I guess that wouldn't matter since mine go off of rim and not the tire.
To avoid any issues in this thread, I will have limited or no further response but do look forward to your findings.

I'm thinking the toe-in on front may compensate a bit for a suspension slumping rearward under load, but probably works with the rear toe-in to provide a predictable and understeer-y driving experience.
The question is if these number are valid with a lowered, more balanced car, urethane bushings, on modern tire compounds.
At some point I'll have some kind of rear anti-roll bar and would require some changes to balance things out.
I've never autocrossed or raced officially, but I ran the tire marks after an autocross day and was really amused by the understeer that a stock DMC has at slower speeds.

A large amount of toe in is used on some older cars but mainly trucks that have a lot of play inherent to the steering system. By giving them a lot of toe, when all of the play is taken out, the wheels run pretty straight. Modern cars run much tighter and have a lot less toe to have better road feel, go straighter, get better gas mileage, and tire life. Always try to align by the manufacturer's specs unless you are doing something custom like racing. Racing specs are a whole other world. When you start talking about corner balancing you are starting to get into that area of specialty. A typical 4 wheel alignment, that requires no parts (except shims and washers) should cost no less than $80 and no more than $150 and take less than an hour. On Deloreans the suspension was designed by Lotus, they are world renowned as suspension experts and have a rolling wind tunnel. Major manufacturers go to Lotus Engineering to have their cars fine tuned. If you are going to modify it you should be at least as knowledgeable as they are if you expect to improve on it. For the majority of owners that choose to have their alignment done by a shop, if the car is set to the specs given by DMC the car will perform about as good as it gets assuming no worn, bent parts and a good set of tires properly inflated. For the few owners that want to do it themselves, learn as much as you can before doing it and get the proper equipment or try to borrow it. Some of it can be made. A set of plates and some BB's can work as slide tables for example. Ride height is all important so take as much time as you have to to get that set first. All of your other measurements will be affected by that so you have to get that right. I do alignments but only so I can drive a car that I did a lot of work on till I can get it to a rack and have it done accurately. I get close but not perfect.

My 30 year old Bronco calls for 1/16" of total toe. And that's with TTB suspension. (Known for lots of play) I suspect the large toe in numbers on our car are due to the lower control arm pulling back on the sway bar bushings. Probably the wheels pull back to neerly zero. (Unless you have a brace) I'm wondering if Delorean Indutries advises to lessen that number when installing their kit. Normally toe is to account for tires, not suspension play. (Tall profile tires require more toe)
I do my own alianment on my truck, but it's not for high speed. Currently my car is driving great at high speed. Of course that doesn't mean the tires will ware correct. Time will tell. If I get a chance, I will see what I have for toe.

-KW coilovers set to "Klaus" rebound settings (12 r, 8 f)
-DPI gen 3 LCAs with caster adjust links
-Stock upper LCAs
-Custom chromoly adjustable rear upper links
-Superflex lower link bushings in stock links
-BF Goodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S, 205/45-16 and 245/45-17 (installed 2018)
Made a toe measuring device using angle aluminum & engineering rulers. Provides a virtual wheel size of 780mm giving much more resolution for string adjustments. The rear is clunky with shims making fairly large changes, so not much to gain from precision back there. You could take readings at the wheel face and still get things close. The TSB says a single shim is 1.1 degrees but I'm not sure that is accurate.
To assist with caster, I printed sheets with 0, +20, and -20 alignment marks. A carpenters laser was fixed to the front wheel on a 3D printed adapter centered over the wheel face, and angle measurements were taken based on the old school method. Getting these measurements to be repeatable took the most time. Most camber measurement tool instructions will tell you to put down tape or a reference point and eyeball it but this never produced something repeatable. The paper & laser worked much better and I could go back & forth and get results within 1/4 degree. With the steering wheel unlocked & the tires on plastic cutting boards (with a layer of grease in between) to act as bearing plates, I could physically move the tires back & forth by hand without trouble.
Target toe degrees: 0.24 per wheel
Rear ride height set so lower links parallel to ground
Front ride height set with tie rods pointed slightly upwards (nose a little lower than tail)
Camber reads 0.75-0.9deg
Rear camber @ to 0.75 w/ custom upper adjusters
Rear toe set to 0.18 / 0.15. Wanted to err on the side of less toe as less toe will dial out a bit of understeer.
Front toe final measurement 0.22
Front caster equalized to 3.9deg on both sides
Preliminary results: Car steers like it has lane detection. Honestly it's pretty amazing - point the steering wheel and it just tracks straight as an arrow, it's never been so good for me. Ride quality is sporty but not punishing which was the main concern going to a coil over system. A series of progressively higher-speed figure-8s in a parking lot offered zero under- and zero oversteer with progressive tire noise from the rear giving feedback as speed increased. It just turned where it should be even threatening to put my passenger in my lap. I'm lucky the unsecured fire extinguisher on the parcel shelf didn't explode LOL
Between the spring rates & not slamming the ride height, I suspect the roll center is close to where it should be and body roll was surprisingly controlled for a rear-heavy car with no anti-roll bar. At full lock and under heavy throttle it just would not plow or oversteer.
I plan on making some longer trips soon but I'm a believer that with the right combo of hardware this old chassis has some surprises left in it. I'm on the hunt for scales & will properly corner balance at some point, maybe after I have a camber adjustable UCA solution in place.

Youtube videos of our products are literally the worst thing ever. By the time they are published there is already a new rev and it is most likely obsolete in presented form. When owners buy something it doesn't match the video and causes confusion. There is nothing wrong with what is in the video and it will fit and function exceptionally. But I run things with a heavy emphasis on iterative design. Rev's and gen's are only issued publicly when cross compatibility with previous rev's and or gens are not applicable.
Will be interesting to see how much you can dial in the camber once you take it to that step.

Luke, you can use Lotus Esprit upper control arms, which offer adjustable camber and caster. They bolt right up with minor reaming of the steering knuckle.

Good question. Maybe reluctance to modify the front spindle? Why did it take 30 years for owners to begin using the Eagle Premier starter, which I advocated for on the DML in 2004?

Changing the upper taper is fine with me but probably not something most owners are comfortable with. I'm guessing it opens up a world of adaptable off-the-shelf options. These bolt-on Lotus wishbones, as well as adapted or custom custom parts. Something that doesn't need shims for adjustment would be nice but I'll bet the Lotus arms are ultra light.
DI's adjustable caster system is nice in that you can fine tune more than shims, but you are range limited as major increases in caster will put the wheel very close to the fender. Ideally caster is a job for the UCA as it's just sittin' there, mostly doing nothing.

Weird bump, but a chance to say that I have a set of Esprit arms on the workbench awaiting clean & repaint.
Also a very expensive taper reamer that will be used twice.

I'm trying to get my close myself using shade-tree methods. And just to understand the concepts. I'll eventually get a real alignment (having adjusted my ride height up somewhat recently - I suspect introducing some wander due to throwing the toe out a bit)
If it's at the rim: .12" over 14" rim yields nearly .5deg. So are the bulletins NOT meant to revise the toe angle published in the original manual - but only provide a more detailed procedure?
If it's over 23.2 we get .3deg. So the bulletins would be suggesting less toe than originally published. But they don't make it clear that's their purpose.
Where did all the alignment equipment providers get .2-.28?
The table for REAR toe distance to angle conversion does work out to suggest it's over the ~26" of rear TIRE.

It seems to be the static tire size standard. I did the math on wheel & tire size, and looked at published specs from around the internet. The 28" standard was the only consistent thing. Expressing an angle with a length measurement is anarchy.

I went with .22 for my front. The size of shims makes the back clunky but went with about 0.15L and 0.18R. It is good.

If it's over 23.2 we get .3deg. So the bulletins would be suggesting less toe than originally published. But they don't make it clear that's their purpose.
Where did all the alignment equipment providers get .2-.28?
The table for REAR toe distance to angle conversion does work out to suggest it's over the ~26" of rear TIRE.
I did the "shade-tree" setting for my front toe after replacing the parts. If you have to little toe in you won't like highway driving because it's a constant moving of the steering just to go straight. I adjusted each wheel about a half turn to get more toe and now driving is great.

Thank you both! I may actually be experiencing two issues. A bit of play in the steering shaft and perhaps the need to toe in a little. They probably add together to make it feel worse.
The symptoms are just like you describe, Dave - a bit wandery at over ~65mph.
I probably shouldn't overthink toe, if I toe in *a little* too much because that's what FEELS right on the road, the only downside is a slight bit more tire wear (if we're talking a few extra 10ths of a degree). But if the original factory spec was .5deg, well I can't see that being too crazy.

Some of your wandering may be due to cross caster, which seems to affect our cars. My own had at least a degree and I know another DIYer that had the same problem.

Last year I fixed caster using the DPI lower links. They're good but you can only adjust caster a bit using the DPI LCA system.
This year, if all goes well, these Lotus UCAs will help get the front end exactly right

My front suspension is 100% DPI. Rear is mostly DPI, trailing arms and upper control arms are factory.
