I just purchsed a set of the new DMC convex mirrors, and wanted to ask if anyone here can give me some pointers on the best way to remove the old ones, and what is the best method to install the new mirrors....
Anyone......? Thanks!

I used a putty knife to get the old glass off. To hold the new mirror on I used 3m mounting tape.

I stalled a set of MultiVex mirrors 2 years ago...taped them directly to the old glass, if I am not mistaken that's what the instructions said to do but either way that's what I did. Excellent product.

I used a hair dryer to warm up the glass and help free it from the old adhesive. Then after the glass was separated from the plastic behind it, I cleaned off the adhesive residue with brake cleaner, dried both surfaces thoroughly, and replaced the glass using 3M emblem tape (grey with red plastic backing) to attach. So far so good.

Same as Farrar, hairdrying on medium heat, be patient.

And put an old pillow or blanket under you wing mirror so it won't break when it suddenly falls on your garage floor. Not because of the mirror, but because of the glass splinters on your floor.

I used a heat gun at a low setting to gently warm up the mirror, and just worked a small putty knife to seperate the glass off. I used 3M super strenth molding tape on the new mirrors. Pretty easy job....
Thanks again guys!

Me too! they just came in the mail today. Guess I'll try the hair dryer on them. Actually want to take the whole mirror off the car cause they need to be sanded/painted. Don't think I could do a very good job with them still installed.

I know the new ones are convex, but didn't expect the entire piece of glass to be curved. I thought the back would be flat. I never seen what the mirrors are attached to, is it a flat piece of plastic? You just put the adhesive tape in the middle?

I thought I had some pictures of when I did this but my camera seems to have gone AWOL on me. The plastic backing plate behind the mirror has a convex indention in the center where the screw that holds it to the rest of the mirror support is. I used two pieces of tape, top and bottom, to hold my flat stock mirrors in place.

Hi Ben!
I took a few photos of the process, and I will post those up tomorrow. Put the 3M tape on the entire mirror back. The plastic that the glass sticks to is pretty thin, and will be somewhat flexible, so it will adhere well. Once the glass was installed, I used a small "L" shaped Allen wrench to slide in behind the plastic piece and then held it and pushed the mirror against it to help the adhesion of the tape.
The original glass does have adhesive tape on the entire mirror.

I just got my new glass in the mail today as well and was wondering how to do this very install. I will go try the hair dryer and putty knife trick right now! I was inside the doors anyway doing my new lock actuators so I removed the entire mirror assembly from the car since to do this. Hopefully that will make it easier.

Now for a fun DeLorean fact...Did you know there are two different types of side mirrors depending on your VIN? Mine do not look like Ed's above, I have the early VIN (before 5930) with no frame around the original glass. My plastic backing doesn't have the lip.

From the Bible...err I mean concourse manual...

Mine (vin 2543) whats the mirror attaches too..
6026

And for SnG's this is what it looks like with that piece off. Just the one screw in the center holds it on...

Also, the mirror housing is smooth for the early style and textured for the late style..

Really? I knew not of this. Pics? What is considered "late style". I'd consider mine slightly textured, like less than the louvers texturing. Enough to where I didn't want to sand them down to paint them cause I would lose it. I just "Back to Black" them.

Edit: Looking at mine vs Ed's pics above I can kinda see how he really has some texture compared to mine, but still, got a pic of the front side?

Ran across this thread cuz I am looking for a new convex.

I did the 3m tape PLUS Goop which as alot know is a thick smelly jel that turns into very strong rubber. This was about a year and 1/2 ago. Well its been warm the last day or so and today I slammed the pass door and yup,:t2: the rearview mirror fell out.
In agonizingly ultra slow motion just so I could make that reflex to try and grab it.
40 bucks smashed to the ground!
Amazingly the stock flat glass behind it was not even scratched so I removed the ultra fragile convex, cleaned off the crap and used it.
Dont know if the Dmc CONVEX is the multivex I was using but I am getting ready to order.
And yes, the convex are worth every penny along with a convex or a larger wrap around rear view mirror inside.

Lucky the old glass was intact I guess. But I would have thought having two layers of glass would cause the mechanism to jam at the extreme edges of movement. Might get better adjustment and better adhesion for the new mirror when you get it if you pull off the old glass first.

What??? You mean the rearview mirrors move?
I unplugged anything electrical as they are just a pita imo.
Give me manual windows,locks,rv mirrors.
I mean how often do you adjust the mirrors? I did hook mine up to see and yes they creaked and slowly moved but just another gremlin awaiting to me.

I had them installed by DMC FL last week I can now back my car in the garage without trying to bend in places where I shouldn't. the car fits with just 1-2 inches on the passenger side.

I really like driving with the new mirrors. I can actually see cars without gaps in my view. as most of you know there are times when you are passing, or being passed, that you cannot see the cars in your rear view mirror.

This is one of the best things you can do for the small amount of money.

I kept the old mirrors in case I want to go back to original.

Isn't the 'rear view mirror' the one placed in the center of your windscreen? No wonder it keeps falling off. Confusing stuff.
